2025 Preview: Penn Yan
Unleashing 2025 with Grit and Determination
The Penn Yan Boys Lacrosse team is gearing up for an exciting 2025 season, and expectations are high. Last year, the Mustangs had a solid run with a 12-6 record, demonstrating their competitive spirit in Class D. Despite losing five seniors, including key players like Hunter Sheehan and Bryant VanHousen, the team is poised to build on their previous success with a strong returning roster.
Strength in Numbers
The Mustangs have a wealth of experience returning to the field this season. With 89% of their total goals and 84% of their assists from last year returning, they have a proven track record of offensive prowess. Key players like Braden Fingar (Towson commit) and Teagan Fingar (Mt. St. Mary commit) will be leading the charge, with Braden netting 37 goals and 17 assists last season, and Teagan contributing 38 goals and 36 assists. These seasoned midfielders, along with attackman Tukker Fisher and Mike Gigliotti, who also earned All-Tournament honors, will be critical in maintaining the team's high scoring average of 10.1 goals per game.
Defensive Fortitude
Defensively, the Mustangs were stout last year, allowing an average of just 5.7 goals per game. Although they graduated defensive standouts like Hunter Sheehan, the returning players are ready to step up. Aven Foster is a three year starter at long pole returns along with Will Thompson (Fairfield), a 63% goalie who was MVP of sectional title game in 2023, and missed last year.
The Road Ahead
The 2024 season saw Penn Yan playing a slew of close games, with 13 matches decided by five goals or fewer. Their ability to win tight contests, as evidenced by their three victories by just one goal, will be crucial again this year. The team has proven they can handle pressure, but they'll need to stay sharp to avoid the narrow losses that affected them last season.
Coach Brian Hobart, entering his 22nd season with an impressive record of 307-112, will no doubt have his team prepared to meet any challenge. "I'm excited to get started. This group is focused on regaining the section V championship we failed to get last season. We have a nice mix of veteran players and younger talent that needs to gel together. A renewed hunger to be successful will define this group this season."
Key Dates
The Mustangs' 2025 schedule is packed with must-see matchups. Early season games against tough opponents like Homer, Cortland and Thomas will set the tone. Fans should mark their calendars for critical league clashes and the always-anticipated rematch against Fairport in the last game of the regular season.
Coaching Legacy
Coach Hobart's influence on Penn Yan lacrosse is unmistakable. Having played high school lacrosse at Penn Yan himself, his deep connection to the program and community drives his passion for excellence. With his leadership, the Mustangs are not just playing for wins but for a legacy of pride and perseverance.
As the 2025 season approaches, the Penn Yan Boys Lacrosse team is ready to take the field with a blend of experience, talent, and determination. The journey ahead promises to be filled with thrilling moments and opportunities for this resilient squad to showcase their skill and tenacity.
