Spencerport Scores Last Four to Win by One
Spencerport only led for just under two minutes during their 10-9 win over Churchville-Chili tonight in the opening round of the Class B Tournament. The eighth seeded Rangers played the ninth seeded Saints for the second time this season. Their last matchup was less than a week ago with Spencerport winning that game 12-6. Tonight, the Saints played a much stronger game and led for the majority; including a three goal lead halfway through the fourth quarter that Spencerport fought back against.
After six minutes with a score, Spencerport scored the game opener with 5:53 left on the clock. Todd Smith assisted Michael Vinci. The first of two Ranger leads only lasted 1:37. Churchville-Chili scored their opening goal off a feed from Eli Chalmers to Brandon Clark. Before the first quarter ended, Chalmers was back with another assists, this time to Austin Muscianese. The Saints led 2-1 after 12 minutes.
They also scored the opener of the second quarter to take the first of five two-goal leads. Patrick Mitchell scored unassisted for Churchville-Chili. Smith recorded his second straight assist, this time to Zach Edwards thirty seconds later. The Saints didn’t let up with Mitchell scoring another unassisted goal to keep them up by two. They held that lead into the final minute. Spencerport’s intensity showed in the final minute as Gostling scored back to back goals only nine seconds apart to tie the game (0:35 and 0:26). At halftime, the score was tied 4-4.
Similar to the second, Churchville-Chili opened the scoring in the third. Chalmers assisted Braeden Schmidt two minutes into the half. Smith scored his first goal for Spencerport to re-tie the game for the third time. Chalmers scored his first of three goals six minutes later to keep Churchville-Chili ahead going into the final quarter.
The early fourth quarter belonged to Churchville-Chili as they scored three of the first four (including two more by Chalmers). The final Saint’s goal was scored by Muscianese with 7:21 remaining. The Saints led by three going into the second half of the fourth quarter. Spencerport stepped up in the final six minutes both offensively and defensively. The offense kept control of the ball for long stretches that often culminated in scoring. Defensively, when Churchville-Chili did get that ball they forced bad passes. The Saints only had a single shot in the final six minutes. Gostling scored his third and fourth goal for Spencerport with Connor Mesh and Jacob Zimmerman scoring the other two. Gostling, who scored the game winner, scored his fourth goal of the night with only 0:14 remaining in regulation. The Rangers advance to face top-seeded Canandaigua in the Quarter Finals.
