Irondequoit Over McQuaid - Lots to Celebrate
Saturday: DAY IN REVIEW: With the games played today, there is only one week left in the regular season. Although more games played today were mismatches, several were close, starting with a double overtime win for Spencerport and a one goal win for Irondequoit.
The Greece Storm (10-5) played a close game with Webster Schroeder (7-8) as they won 10-8 with scoring by six players, led by Nicholas Leonardi (2g-2a) and Trevor Gillard (4g). The Warriors had scoring from seven players with four players scoring two points each. Greece will finish their regular season with HF-L on Tuesday. Schroeder will finish their season with Brighton , also on Tuesday.
The big highly anticipated weekend finally arrived for Fairport where they had all sorts of activities to celebrate their 50th lacrosse season. There were lots of games at all levels, dinners, and an alumni game. At the start of the Varsity game against Orchard Park, three of the four coaches that have led the Red Raiders were acknowledge at midfield. The first coach, Jim Slusarski, who started the team in 1969, a year after his graduation from Hobart College, was present along with Randy Garrett, who took over in 1980 was in charge until Mike Torrelli took over in 2005. Also present was John Torrens, who was one of the team captains and one of two team MVPs on the first team. Fairport won the game 12-3 with Tim Defendis recording 8s (73%) and ten players making the offensive stat book, led by Colin Peers with 3g-4a. See GALLERY
Penn Yan was a 17-7 winner at West Seneca East (Section VI) today. The win gave Head Coach Brian Hobart his 250th win at Penn Yan. Coach Hobart, after many years a an assistant under Harry Queener, took over the program in 2004 and won his first Section V championship his first year and every year since, except one. His teams have made the NYS final four twelve times. His current record is 250-86.
After trailing for nearly the entire game, Irondequoit came back to take their first lead early in the fourth quarter. The Eagles won 9-8 over McQuaid Jesuit with the game winning goal coming in the final minute. The Knights took the early lead with four of the first five goals; they led by three goals twice in the first half before Irondequoit came back to tie the game (6-6) at the half. STORY CONTINUES
Spencerport fought back with the last three goals to defeat Midlakes 7-6 in the second overtime period. The Rangers held the Screaming Eagles scoreless for the final twenty-one minutes spanning the third, fourth quarters and two overtime periods. Spencerport had an early lead before Midlakes scored five out of six straight goals to take a two-goal lead into the late third quarter. STORY CONTINUES
Also winning today were Brockport, Penn Yan, Livonia-Avon, Brighton, Aquinas and Mynderse.
