-- One of the most anticipated games of the season pitted Fairport and Pittsford in an end of the year game for the league championship. Given the expected crowds, the game was moved from Pittsford Mendon to St. John Fisher College. The game was, as expected, an exciting one, which was won in overtime by Fairport.
Fairport scored the first two goals of the game with the same two players. Jay Vakiener threw the ball to Dan McAvoy to give the Red Raiders a 2-0 lead. Pittsford came back on a fast break clear with a goal from Albie DiPasquale by way of Andrew Rodenhouse, but Fairport closed the scoring in the first quarter with an unassisted goal by McAvoy (4g). The Red Raiders led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.
The two teams traded the first two goals in the second quarter and then Pittsford scored the last three. Ben Overslaugh scored an unassisted goal for Pittsford on a drive to the crease and Cameron Gebhardt scored an unassisted goal for Fairport after picking up a loose ball on the cease. Pittsford scored at 6:54 with Stephen Quinzi driving from the right. Brandon Barker assisted Overslaugh on the next goal on a pop out. Billy Cooper scored an unassisted goal at 1:58 with an inside dodge to the crease. Fairport led at the half, 5-4.
The momentum shifted back to Fairport in the third, with the Red Raiders adding five goal to their side while holding Pittsford to two. The Panthers scored first to tie the game at 6-6 with a DiPasquale drive from the right crease at 9:21. The Red Raiders scored the next three goals in a period of just over two minutes. Kevin Vaughn struck with a hard sidearm shot from the top center. Jack Sanna fed Kacin Welch on the crease and Vakiener fed Gebhardt on a cross-crease pass. DiPasquale broke the Fairport streak with an unassisted goal for the Panthers, but Fairport came back less than a minute later with Vaughn feeding McAvoy with a quick pass to the far side of the goal. Vakiener assisted the final goal of the quarter when he threw the ball to Justin Kesselring with just over three minutes left in the third quarter.
Fairport was ahead by two goals at the top of the last quarter, but junior midfielder Brandon Barker scored two unassisted goal (one at 10:38 and the other at 1:49) to tie the game at 9-9. Despite efforts by both teams, the last minute and a half was played without a tie-breaker.
Pittsford won the face off at the top of the first overtime period. After a timeout and a couple of tussles for ground balls, Fairport took possession and called their own timeout. Fairport put a shot on the cage but as it bounced off the goalie the loose ball was picked up by CT Bove and pooped into the goal for the thrilling finish to an excellent game.
-- Game NOTE: Stephen Ricci helped the Panthers win 14 of 17 face offs.
