-- In perhaps the most exciting game of the day, Webster Thomas overcame a 7-3 deficit and scored six unanswered goals to defeat Penfield 9-7 in the opening game for both teams.
The game started out evenly as each teams played cautiously, holding the ball at times and testing various match ups. Penfield scored first as senior attackman Andrew Schoeneck (Bellarmine) added the first of his two goals at 8:54. Thomas returned, at 6:09 with an unassisted goal by sophomore middie Kevin Hill (Penn State). The Titans went ahead on a beautiful setup with senior middie Justin Bird feeding senior attackman Jake Giudice with just over five minutes left in the first quarter. Giudice led the Thomas effort, ending the game with 3g-2a. Penfield ended first quarter the scoring with just under a minutes left. Junior midfielder Mitch Standera found Ryan Fulton whose hard side arm shot tied the game at 2-2. It was the first varsity goal for the junior attackman.
After a number of full-field transitions, Giudice scored again on a feed from Bird to break the tie with 5:22 left in the half. At that point, however, Penfield put together a string of five unanswered goals, spanning the rest of the second quarter and much of the third. With 2:02 left in the half, Standera scored on an assist from junior midfielder Brian Wall to tie the game at 3-3. With the clock at 1.1 seconds left, senior attackman Jonathan Spaan scored on a feed from Connor Russell (Albany) to give the Patriots a one goal advantage as the teams broke for halftime.
Penfield wasted no time as the game started again, scoring the first of three in a row in the first minute of the third quarter. Senior middie Anthony Mitchell received the ball from Standera and put Penfield up by two (5-3). On the next face off, senior Connor Russell won his own draw and ran to the Thomas goal where he passed the ball to sophomore attackman Max Spaan who scored at 10:37. Schoeneck scored next, on an unassisted drive the goal, giving Penfield their last goal of the game with 9:01 left in the third quarter.
The rest of the game belonged to the Titans although it did take them a while to get started. The momentum was still with Penfield, but a few of the more vocal players from Webster Thomas challenged their teammates. The encouragement paid off with a two goal flurry that took place in a span of sixteen seconds. Senior attackman John Hill scored on a feed from Giudice at 3:51 and after the next face off, Hill fed junior attackman Mitch Hutteman. The two quick goals changed the momentum in favor of the Titans. As the quarter ended, Penfield was clinging to a two goal lead (7-5).
The Patriots continued to get ball time at the top of the fourth quarter but a couple of penalties gave Thomas added time with the ball and raised their confidence. Giudice scored again on a crossing pass from sophomore middie Pat LeMoine with 5:33 left in the game. John Hill scored on a pass from Bird, in man up, to tie the game at 7-7 with just over four minutes left. Exactly one minute later Hutteman scored again on a crossing pass from Giudice for the go-ahead goal. Although Penfield had a couple of opportunities to score, turnovers at the end of the game gave Thomas the ball. Bird scored the last goal of the game with 2:39 left. Tensions were very high during the last two minutes of the game as Penfield worked for ball control and shots, and Thomas looked to maintain possession.
Penfield won the face off race quite decisively with Connor Russell winning nine of twelve (75%) and Brian Wall winning all four (100%). Thomas used four different players, trying to find a challenge.
Senior goalie Alex Gulisano did his part in the cage for Thomas, recording ten saves (59%). Junior goaltender Liam Guiton faced a few shots less and made six saves for Penfield.
The Titans will take the rest of the week off as their next scheduled game will be hosting Churchville-Chili on Tuesday. The Patriots will travel to Canandaigua on Thursday to play the Braves.
