|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
-- It was a cold and mostly rainy day at Penfield when Irondequoit came for this highly anticipated game. The score was close throughout. It was tied 5-5 at the half and Irondequoit took a one goal lead in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the Eagles score one unanswered goal for a 9-7 win.
Irondequoit scored the first goal of the game when Connor Enright cut to the crease and received the ball from Briele Caples from the right wing. Penfield came quickly back, about thirty seconds later, when Matt Condon found Andrew Schoeneck to tie the score. At 4:24 it was Irondequoit's turn again as Caples dodged two Patriot defenders for an unassisted goal. Ben Brooks, facing off for the Eagles, picked up his own ground ball and ran straight to the Penfield cage for an unassisted goal which gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead at 4:16. Penfield came back at 1:51 with a goal from Schoeneck who, surrounded by Eagle defensemen, managed to get a wrist shot off for the score. With less than two seconds left in the first quarter, Jonathan Spaan threw the ball to the front of the cage, where Condon quick sticked the ball past Irondequoit goalie Eric Fischer. The goal ended the quarter with the teams tied at 3-3.
Penfield took a quick lead at the start of the second quarter. Matt Bilak scored on a drive from out front and bounced the ball into the Irondequoit cage at 11:30. A minute and a half later, Nick Doktor tied the game at 4-4 when, after starting from behind the cage, he drove the crease from the left and put a shot under Penfield goalie Keith Keehn's stick. The Eagles took another one goal lead with a goal by Gunnar Miller at 5:41. He completed an inside dodge and finished with a wrist shot. Penfield tied the game again with less than two minutes in the half. Schoeneck made a crossing pass to senior middie Jacob Aldrich who scored with a hard overhand shot. The half ended in a 5-5 tie.
The temperature dropped during the halftime break but the hard rain let up some and even stopped on occasion. Both teams, however, were feeling the heat as the alternating scoring made it clear that it either team could become the victor. After a number of transitions from one end of the field to the other, the Eagles took a two goal lead half-way through the third quarter. Caples took a very hard side-arm shot from twenty yards out from the goalie's right for the first goal. Two minutes later George Jerman started with the ball behind the cage and drove the crease to the right. After beating his defender he roll-dodged the sliding defenseman and shot one past Keehn. Thirty second later, however Schoeneck, assisted by Condon brought the Patriots to within one goal with his man up goal at 4:14. Irondequoit was still looking for goals when a shot missed the cage but was caught by Doktor behind the cage. He quickly returned the ball to the front of the cage where he found Enright who scored, giving the Eagles a two goal advantage again. But with less than a minute left in the third quarter, Penfield closed the gap again with another goal by Schoeneck, this time assisted by Condon. The quarter ended with the Eagles up 8-7.
The last quarter was filled with tension and hard-fought ball possessions. Although there were very few penalties called in the game, the Patriots picked up two offsides penalties. The Eagles, however, were held back by the Penfield man down unit. Keehn made three impressive saves in the last quarter and kept the score close. Although both teams were deliberate in setting up offensive plays, Irondequoit was still looking for goals until that last few minutes of the game. They found one more, at 4:50 when Miller passed to Enright to give the Eagles a two goal lead. Penfield had some opportunities but Irondequoit goalie Eric Fischer, who also made a number of outstanding saves, beat a Penfield attackman to the end line on a missed shot, which gave the Eagles possession at the end of the game. Irondequoit was able to keep the ball in their offensive box in spite of doubling efforts by the Patriots.
For those that were expecting an exciting game, there were no disappointments, except, perhaps in the weather. There were few penalties and the game plans by Head Coaches Craig Whipple and John Schembri were obvious and well played by the athletes on both teams.
For Irondequoit, Enright finished the game with 3g, and Caples finished with 2g-1a to lead the group of six players on the offensive book. Fischer made 7 saves for the Eagles who were successful in 100% of their clear in the game. The win advances their record to 8-1. They are scheduled to play Victor and Rush-Henrietta next week.
Schoeneck was the offensive leader for Penfield with 4g-1a. Condon finished with 1g-2a. Face off specialist Connor Russell won 15 of 18 face offs for the Patriots and also led the team in ground balls with 11. Keehn was credited with 12 saves (57%). The Patriots (6-3) will travel to Section VI on Saturday to play West Seneca East. Next week they will play Fairport on Tuesday and Victor on Thursday.
