-- Penn Yan never trailed in their 10-8 win over Penfield. Just 0:47 into the game, Bradley Voigt scored with an assist from Rion Davison. The Patriots tied the game three times at 1-1, 6-6 and 8-8, but never took the lead. The skill of both teams was demonstrated during man-up with all five man-up opportunities resulting in goals, four goals for Penfield and two for Penn Yan.
After Voigt's goal, Penfield tied the game with Matt Bilak assisting Andrew Huntington. Huntington finished with 3g-2a for the Patriots. Penn Yan took the rest of the quarter to score three more goals. Jordan Owen scored the first two of his three goals at 6:58 and 6:01. The first was assisted by Ryan Maciejewski and the second was unassisted. Voigt scored his second, with 0:23 remaining, with an assist from Jeremy Bunn. Penn Yan led 4-1 after the first quarter.

Then Huntington scored with an assist from Jonathan Spaan. Penn Yan's Dylan Yonts kept the lead at two with an unassisted goal. Penn Yan kept the two goal lead for five minutes before Dan Maring brought it within a single goal again. However, Penn Yan was not done for the half. They scored with 0:34 remaining when Colby Treat assisted Voigt for his third and final goal. Penn Yan led 6-4 going into halftime.
Like the second quarter, Penfield came out strong and scored the first two goals. Once again Huntington and Schoeneck scored for the Patriots. Less than one minute into the quarter the Patriots and tied the score. One key to the quick goals for Penfield was the return of face off man Connor Russell. Russell, who has been out recently with an injury, returned today and finished 18/21 (86%) at the draw. He also finished with a team leading 14 ground balls. Penn Yan scored one minute later with an unassisted goal from Yonts. Six minutes passed and the Mustangs scored again to take a two goal lead. Owen scored his third and final time with an unassisted goal during man-up. Penfield came back in the final minute of the quarter to tie the game again. Jacob Aldrich scored, assisted by Schoeneck, during a man-up play. With 0:06 remaining in the quarter Matt Condon scored, assisted by Huntington, to tie the game.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Mustangs. They scored the only two goals of the quarter to secure the win. With time running out and the Patriots down by one goal, they pulled their goalie, placing him in their offensive end of the field and doubling the Penn Yan ball carrier. Although they were able get possession they lost it and drew a penalty. Once again, they pulled the goalie and placed one long stick against Dylan Yonts, with the ball. Yonts beat his man and scored his final goal on an open net with 0:30 remaining. Although Russell won the last face-off, the Patriots could score. Penn Yan goalie Brandon Maciejewski came up with six saves in the fourth quarter alone to keep the Patriots from getting back in the game. He finished the game with 17 saves (68%). For Penfield, Keith Keehn finished with 5 saves.

Pittsford 9 - HFL 5 |
-- Pittsford defeated HF-L 9-5 this afternoon. The final score does not do proper justice to the exciting battle that took place at Pittsford Mendon High School. The game was much closer than the score indicated. Pittsford scored two goals in the final three minutes when HF-L was playing out to get the ball which explains some of the four point difference.
Pittsford did plenty of things right. They finished 78% at the face-off with Matt Barbaccia going 14/18. They cleared at 83% and rode at 46%. They won the ground ball battle 34-23. There were very few faults for the 5-1 Panthers. The Panthers came into the season looking unstoppable. However, today at Mendon High School they played well, but were not unstoppable. HF-L, who got the short end of the scheduling stick, is sitting at 1-5 having already faced (and lost to) Penfield, Penn Yan, Aquinas and Canandaigua. The combined record of HF-L's opponents is 29-10. The Cougar's defense looked patient and practiced and of Pittsford's first five goals only one was scored due to a defensive misstep. Senior goalie Nick Beniamino was impressive between the pipes, recording 13 saves (59%). Their offense was also exceedingly patient. They scored on 5 of 8 shots on cage, waiting for opportunities to present themselves.
All this being said HF-L was not the better team today. They had difficulty clearing (54%) and trouble hitting the cage late in the game (38% on cage) as they lost patience. They also did not have the crisp passing of the Panthers and the ball was often pressured to the ground by the Panther defense. HF-L looked good, but Pittsford looked like former Champions. They looked strong and in this game demonstrated how a top tier Class A should look. When push came to shove, Pittsford knew how to win and they stepped up to win this game.
HF-L's defense stepped up in the first quarter to keep the game from getting out of control. The Panthers won the opening face off and kept possession for the first 3:15. The Cougars did not see the ball on their offensive side and the Panthers just kept driving at the cage. However, drive after drive, the Cougars turned Pittsford back. It took 82 seconds for the Panthers to get their first shots off after about five drive attempts. The Cougars slid and dropped back and kept Pittsford from getting a good angle on the cage. The first Panther goal was scored at 7:08. HF-L went offsides on the previous clear and had seven defenders down field. With their coaching staff yelling for a take, the Cougars left their standard defense to try and knock the ball down. That was their first mistake and it was all Pittsford needed. Stephen Quinzi drove into the double causing a slide from the crease which left Albie DiPasquale open for the goal. DiPasquale shot high over Beniamino for the score. Pittsford won the ensuing face off and kept up the offensive pressure. Three minutes later HF-L sent a player to the penalty box. Pittsford had six man-up attempts in the game and converted two. HF-L had a single 30 second man up attempt early in the game and with a late two minute attempt with 0:42 in the game. Pittsford scored once again with Quinzi assisting DiPasquale. Pittsford led 2-0 after the first quarter. HF-L did not take a single shot in the entire 12 minute quarter.
Pittsford once again won the opening face-off and took a long possession. The first three shots on cage were all stopped by Beniamino. This gave HF-L their first offensive possession and their first shot on cage. They made it count. The Cougars came down the field in a fast-break and quickly passed the ball around the attack. The goal was eventually scored by Connor Flaherty with Chandler Clarke assisting. Three minutes later HF-L scored their second goal. Drew Tallon took a hard underhand shot from the top of the restraining line and it scored under the cross of Luke Loveys. Loveys played the first half for the Panthers and did not record a save. With 5:25 remaining in the second quarter the score was tied 2-2. Pittsford won another face off and had another offensive set. Defenseman Tim Copeland came up with a big defensive play to force the Panthers into a bad position for the shot and Beniamino came up with a big save. After a failed clear the ball was back in the Panther's sticks. Pittsford's third goal began with a shot from Quinzi. Quinzi's shot went wide of the net and Beniamino came out of the cage to chase the shot. What he didn't know was that DiPasquale was behind the cage and instead of it going out of bounds, he caught it. DiPasquale, quick on his feet, looked to the crease and fed Steven Ricci. Beniamino didn't have a chance and the Panthers were back in the lead. After another win by Barbaccia, Pittsford was back on offense. Pittsford's fourth goal came from a power play by Corey Parke. Parke started after a dead ball from the left side. He ran straight to the cage and no amount of defense could stop him. After dodging three players he put the ball into the net. Pittsford kept possession once again and looked to slow the pace. With 0:48 remaining they scored their fifth goal. DiPasquale drove from behind the cage and dumped the ball to Quinzi on the crease. Quinzi was swarmed by defenseman but got the shot off. The bounce was high and hit the top crossbar before bouncing down and in. Pittsford led 5-2 going into halftime.
HF-L came out of the half and scored two goals while holding the Panthers scoreless. 1:08 into the quarter, they had their 30 second man-up attempt. They made the most of it and scored with Nick Weston assisting Tallon from the top of the restraining line. Two minutes later defenseman Keanan O'Brien cleared the ball all the way down to finish into the back of the net. The momentum had changed and HF-L was excited. The two teams kept equal possession in the third but neither team could score another goal. In the third quarter alone, the Cougars had six forced takes against the Panthers, including two that were on rides. Pittsford finished the quarter with six shots and only two on cage. Pittsford led 5-4 going into the final quarter.
With 10:26 remaining in the final quarter, HF-L tied the score. Weston drove from behind the cage and in an impressive feat of athleticism fed the ball to Jason Boike across the crease on the flat. HF-L was pumped up. However, the felling would not last. Pittsford won the face off and retook the lead 0:34 later. In another unsettled goal for the Panthers, Brad Schumacher scored an unassisted goal after he picked up a loose ball halfway to the restraining line. The ball was knocked down by the Cougar's Aidan Papalia and Schumacher was in perfect position to exploit the unexpected shot. Pittsford won the face off and HF-L was given a penalty. The Panthers went man-up and HF-L kept up the pressure and tried to take the ball away. The officials threw another flag against HF-L and the Panthers were two men up. Pittsford wasted little time and scored with Parke assisting Ben Overslaugh. Pittsford led 7-5 with 8:35 remaining. HF-L tried to keep up with the Panthers. However, the more desperate they got, the more they forgot their outstanding defense. Pittsford remained as cool as they have been the entire game and converted their last two goals with limited interruption. Parke scored unassisted at 3:02 and Tyler Aycock assisted DiPasquale at 2:22. The Panthers held the ball for the final minutes to wind down the clock and secure the win.
For Pittsford, Barbaccia and Aycock on the face off were nearly unstoppable. The Cougars knew what was going to happen, but seemed unable to stop it. Barbaccia often put the ball right into Aycock's path and he picked it up. Aycock led his team with seven ground balls. In the cage for Pittsford, in the second half, Kyle Lake finished with 2s (66%).
