Champions: Penn Yan, Irondequoit and Pittsford
In the end the top seeded teams in each of the three class won out tonight as Penn Yan, Irondequoit and Pittsford each won. Penn Yan won it's 16th championship with a 12-6 win over Haverling. Irondequoit won it's 15th title and second in a row with a 18-8 win over Churchville-Chili, who made their first appearance in the finals. Pittsford won it's third title as they defeated Fairport 8-5.
The tournament was a celebration for the Whipple family, who had two winners. Pittsford Head Coach Andrew Whipple and his brother, Head Coach Craig Whipple (Irondequoit) both took home their respective Section Five trophies.
There were two other first in today's events. The tournament was suspended for about forty minutes in the first game (Class C) as the result of new rules that prohibit playing when the weather gets to cold or too hot. Using data from a specific web site, officials were required to monitor the "Realfeel" temperature and when it rose above 96 degrees, the game was suspended. Fortunately, the Penn Yan vs Haverling game was delayed at halftime, after which, the temperature steadily decreased throughout the night.
The other first, was the addition of a sponsor for Championship Day. Canandaigua National Bank and Trust provided trophies and souvenir programs among other things. Vice President of Marketing, Tamra O'Donnell was on hand throughout the day to help in handing out awards after each of the games.
