-- The Braves from Canandaigua came to Fairport's "Death Valley" today where the Red Raiders scored six unanswered goals in the third quarter and another in the last quarter on their way to an 11-2 victory.
The first quarter started off slowly with Fairport scoring two unanswered goals. The first, at 9:24 saw sophomore middie Max Gerling picking off a loose ball that had bounced off Canandaigua goalie, Corey Griffin's stick. With just under two minutes left in the first quarter, senior midfielder Jerry Warner scored on a drive from the left wing. The bounce shot to the goalie's left side gave the Red Raiders a 2-0 lead as the quarter ended.
Fairport made it 3-0 in the opening minutes of the second quarter when senior goalie, Kyle Bowerman cleared the ball to nearly midfield. He then unloaded a sharp long pass to sophomore middie Jay Vakiener who scored from a shot from front center. Thirty seconds later, at 8:13, Canandaigua saw their first goal on a crease cut from senior middie Mark Greer taking the ball from sophomore middie Connor Moore. Two minutes after that the Braves scored their final goal of the game when senior attackman Nic Wood took a feed from Even Helming and cut to the goal on the goalie's left. Fairport junior Derek DeJoe threw the ball from behind the net to Brian Martin with 4:10 left and the half ended with the Red Raiders up 4-2.
A significant number of normal starters, who were absent in the first half appeared in the third quarter and the Red Raiders scored six unanswered goals to finish up 10-2. Martin scored the first goal, shortly after the face off on a drive from behind the cage and after breaking free of his defenseman. At 9:24 Stephen Danylyshyn drove from behind the cage. His defenseman stripped one hand off his stick and Danylyshyn finished the play with a one-handed underhand shot while falling in front of the crease.
After taking nearly six minutes off the clock, Fairport scored two in a row starting at 3:28. Vakiener received a long pass from Max Gerling and scored on Griffin with a bounce shot to the lower left. Danylyshyn scored again seven seconds after the face off on a shot low to the ground. Andrew Hays picked off a CA clearing pass and took it right to the goal at 1:54 and at 1:18 DeJoe scored on a pass from Hays in man up. The quarter ended with Fairport up 10-2.
While both teams cleared the bench at some point in the last quarter, Fairport scored the only goal. Sophomore middie Kevin Vaughn scored from the top left with a bounced shot that got past Canandaigua sophomore goalie, Michael Cuciti. Cuciti played the last quarter for the Braves and made five saves.
Bowerman had the first half of the game in the Fairport nets, making seven saves (78%). Blaze Riorden took the second half and made eight saves for the Red Raiders who improve their record to 5-0.

Penn Yan 11 - Geneva 1 |
-- Last season when Coach Brian Hobart decided that the Mustangs were leaving the Finger Lakes League to go independent it was to seek out competitive lacrosse. One Finger Lakes team that Coach Hobart wanted to keep on the schedule was Geneva as, over the years, a great rivalry has evolved between these two teams located just seventeen miles away from each other. Tonight, at Mustang Field that rivalry was renewed as the 1-0 Panthers took the field against the 2-1 Mustangs. The game opened with Geneva's Nate Chilbert winning the opening face off and the Panthers on offense who quickly turned it over when Anthony Luppino recorded a take and the action shifted directions. Both teams put the ball on the ground several times over the first five minutes of play as the action was fast and somewhat furious in the middle of the field. That changed at the 7:00 minute mark when junior Colby Treat dumped a pass off to freshman Bradley Voigt out in front of Geneva goalie Derek Grillone. Voigt buried the shot for his tenth goal of the season. For the remainder of the first quarter play was at a hectic pace up and down the field with both teams possessing the ball but never really threatening the goal. The first period ended with Penn Yan leading 1-0.
As the second period got underway, the unsettled play continued and until at the 10:12 mark Penn Yan was flagged for a cross check and Geneva was on man up for one minute. The Mustang defense was able to stave off the Panther's extra man but as the teams came to even strength, Geneva's Will Brennan picked up the ball in front of Mustang goalie Brandon Maciejewski and fired a shot that beat the freshman net minder with 8:52 showing on the clock. This proved to be Geneva's only goal of the contest as the Penn Yan defense smothered their offense kept them from scoring over the next twenty-seven minutes of the game. With the score tied at 1-1, JJ Voigt picked up a loose ball in front of Grillone and fired it high into the back of the net with 5:23 left in the half. Twenty four seconds later Bradley Voigt scored his second of the game on a feed from Dylan Yonts and PY jumped out to a 3-1 lead . With 1:07 showing in the half, Penn Yan extended their lead to 4-1 on arguably the most entertaining goal of the game when Yonts hung in the air and scored on a twenty yard cross field feed from sophomore Ryan Maciejewski as the crowd applauded the efforts of both players. The Penn Yan run continued with a goal just nine seconds later when Luppino won the face off, ran to the goal, and dished off to Ryan Maciejewski who finished and gave the Mustangs a 5-1 lead.
Geneva had a great opportunity to score just before the half but Sean Cunningham's shot found the pipe and Will Brennan's rebound shot was saved by Brandon Maciejewski as the horn sounded to end the second.
Geneva started the second half of play by winning the face off and possessing the ball for more than five minutes, including a one minute extra man period but came away frustrated by the Mustang defense who recorded a total of seven takes in the game. Penn Yan pushed the lead to 6-1 at the 3:35 mark of the third when Maciejewski recorded another assist after he beat his defenseman, and stick faked Grillone. He then popped the ball to Bradley Voigt who was waiting opposite post to score his third goal of the game. The orange and blue added two more goals to round out the third as Rion Davison recorded his sixth of the season and JJ Voigt fired a hard bouncer into the back of the net for his second of the game.
The fourth quarter began with Penn Yan man down on an illegal pocket and Geneva started with ball. The defensive middies and poles continued their strong play and Geneva was not able to get a shot on goal. Matt Spoor, took over in the Mustang goal for Maciejewski and played the fourth but did not see a shot. Yonts and JJ Voigt added the ninth and tenth goals respectively early in the final quarter and the Mustangs ran the clock the rest of the way. The win takes Penn Yan to 3-1 while the Panthers even their record at 1-1.
Brandon Maciejewski played 36 minutes in the cage and recorded 5 saves with 1 goal against (83%) and Matt Spoor played 12 minutes and did not face a shot. Derek Grillone made 7 saves with 10 goals against for Geneva. Face offs were even at 7 each with Anthony Luppino (5) and Brandon Grace (2) winning for the Mustangs and Nate Chilbert (7) winning for Geneva. JJ Voigt, Anthony Luppino, and Bradley Voigt each scooped up 4 ground balls for Penn Yan. No report from Geneva.
Next up: On Tuesday Penn Yan is at Haverling and Geneva is at Midlakes.
