-- In the most exciting game of the night, if not the season so far, Churchville-Chili held off multiple late advances by Webster Schroeder to win 10-9. The Saints have faced Schroeder four times since their inception and with this win move to 2-2. Last season, they lost 8-6 and, this season, were looking for revenge. Churchville-Chili played a focused first half, but had some difficulty keeping it together in the second half. Conversely, Schroeder was disorganized in the first half and came out of halftime as a different team. All things considered, the game came down to the final 15 seconds of the third quarter when Bryant University bound senior attackman Ryan Yunker took the game from a one goal game to a three goal game nearly single-handedly.
Churchville-Chili came out with the first goal. Yunker scored his first of 4g-1a with a drive from behind from a dead ball whistle. He was demonstrative throughout the entire game. He carried his team, scoring when necessary and holding the ball when needed. Schroeder tied the game at 1-1 when Dylan DiFante drove from the top of the restraining line and scored. Schroeder only had three players score goals (DiFante, Kenny Nelson and Tyler Mason). Churchville-Chili finished with six different players scoring goals. The first quarter ended tied.
In the second quarter, Churchville-Chili came out swinging, adding four unanswered goals. Pat Bonafede started when he drove towards the crease. Halfway into his drive, he fed the ball inside to Taylor Kolmer. Kolmer finished the game with 2g-2a and 12/17 (71%) at the face-off. Kolmer was key to keeping the ball in Churchville-Chili's hands. Freshman Trevor Hodgins scored his first goal of the season with a straight drive from the top of the box. Last year he finished with 13g-8a as a freshman year. The final two goals of the quarter were scored 0:41 apart. Yunker scored the first goal after an inside feed from Jeff Gurbacki. The second goal was scored by Gurbacki after a cross-crease pass from Yunker. The first half ended with Churchville-Chili leading 5-1 and apparently firmly in control of the game.
Schroeder came together during halftime and came out a greatly different team. In the first half, they took 15 shots with only 6 on cage and only 1 resulting goal. In the second half, Schroeder took 16 shots with 11 on cage and 8 resulting goals. The Warriors came back dedicated to a win and knowing that they could pull it off. If not for the spectacular play of Yunker, the Warriors probably would have won.
Churchville-Chili scored from the opening face-off. Defenseman Nick Bruno, who spent a lot of time on the face-off wings, picked up the ground ball and found face-off man Kolmer up field. Kolmer dodged two defensemen and put the ball into the back of the net in only 0:15. At the time, it looked as though Churchville-Chili would continue their dominate play. However, on the ensuing face-off, Schroeder did nearly the same maneuver. Face-off man Parrish McKnight picked up his own ground ball and looked up field to Mason who finished into the back of the net. Two minutes later, Nelson picked up the loose ball on the crease and netted his first of four goals. He scored his second after a cross-crease pass from Mason with 6:07 remaining to bring the game within two. Churchville-Chili's Steven Rinck scored the next goal after Kolmer broke a Warrior clear and found him open near the crease. Mason came back with another goal after a dead ball drive from the sidelines to bring the game to within one goal with 1:18 remaining.
Even though Churchville-Chili led, Schroeder gained momentum and felt in control of the game. Yunker, knew what needed to be done. He took the ball down behind the cage and then came around the left side and through force of will, broke through multiple Schroeder defensemen to put the ball into the back of the net with 0:11 remaining in the quarter. The Saints were immediately re energized. On the following face-off, Kolmer won on a technical. He moved towards the goal, but looked to Yunker instead who added an exclamation point with another only goal 0:07 later. The result was devastating, erasing not all of the gains by Schroeder, but moving from a one goal game to a three goal game. The third quarter ended 9-6 for Churchville-Chili.
Schroeder kept their heads in the game, believing that they could come back. The scored the next two goals to once again bring the game to within one goal. It took them six minutes to erase Yunker's 0:07. Mason and Nelson each added one goal. With 3:31 remaining, The Warriors were flagged for slashing and the Saints capitalized both on the time and the extra-man. After taking 0:45 off the clock, Bonafede scored (unassisted).
With 2:09 remaining, Churchville-Chili controlled the ball and called a time-out shortly after clearing the ball. They had to keep the ball in the box and control the ball in order to hold the two goal lead. The Saints moved the ball around and Schroeder began to pressure them. With 1:07 remaining a Saint forgot to keep it in the box and the ball was turned over. Schroeder took full advantage of the situation and after clearing, Nelson scored an unassisted goal to bring the game back within one.
Schroeder needed a face-off win and the day was not in their favor. As a team, Churchville-Chili was winning 74%. The final face-off fell with the statistics and Kolmer picked up his own ground ball. The Saints took the ball behind the net and looked to hold the ball once again. Schroeder kept up pressure but it was not enough. As if to tempt fate, with 0:13 remaining, Churchville-Chili made the same mistake as before and stepped outside the box. Schroeder has one more chance. The Warriors took the ball down field, but not in time to get a shot off. As time expired, the Saints ran onto the field in celebration and the Warriors fall to their knees, devastated over how close they were to winning.
In the cage, Eric Saltrelli finished with 6 saves for the Warriors and Jack Corcoran finished with 8 saves for the Saints. Joining Kolmer at face-off, were Nolan Jessop (3/4) and Bonafede (2/2). Leading in ground balls for Churchville-Chili were Bruno (8), Kolmer (7) and Rinck (4). For Schroeder, Nelson (6), Liam Wheatley (5), Mason (4), McKnight (4) and Saltrelli (4) added to the count.
Next up: Churchville-Chili travels to Arcadia on Tuesday and Webster Schroeder travels to Fairport, also on Tuesday.
