-- In the sole high school lacrosse game of the night in Section Five, the Frontier Falcons representing Section Six (Buffalo) traveled to Penn Yan to take on the Mustangs in an intersectional match up.
Penn Yan scored the first goal when sophomore Jordan Owen put a hard shot past the Frontier goalie on a lead pass from Adam Trombley. Penn Yan continued their scoring run when junior Anthony Luppino found 8th grader Bradley Voigt on the crease. The goal was Voigt's 24th of the season and later he scored his team leading 25th goal in the 3rd period. The next two PY goals were netted in transition; the first when JJ Voigt took a pass at midfield after a great stick check and ground ball from Adam Trombley. Voigt ran hard down the alley to the right of the goalie and following a quick face dodge bounced a hard shot home for a 3-0 lead. The Mustang's fourth unanswered goal was scored by sophomore Dylan Yonts following a clear and Yonts sweeping from the goalie's right to behind the cage and then to the goalie's left. As he ran left from behind the cage, he faded away from the net and fired a hard left-handed shot beating the Frontier keeper low. Penn Yan scored once more before the end of the first for a 5-0 lead after one.
In the second quarter, Frontier scored their first goal on Penn Yan net minder Cody Richardson. However, the Mustangs were able to control the pace of play for a significant part of the second quarter. Senior Jamil Modafarri scooped up a loose ball in front of the crease and fired it home to make it 6-1. Moments later Nate Nichols threw a pass cross-crease to Preston Maciejewski, open on the far side, and he finished with a hard shot stick-side for a 7-1 Mustang lead at the halftime break.
The third period was the most productive offensively for the visiting Falcons as their leading scorer, senior Josh Baker, was able to find the back of the net three times. His third with just 12.2 seconds remaining in the quarter as he bull dodged his defender to the left of Richardson and beat him on a high, hard shot. Unfortunately for Baker and his teammates, the Mustang offense was able to put up five goals of their own in the third quarter. The first was an unassisted goal by junior Anthony Luppino on an alley dodge to the right of the keeper. Senior Preston Maciejewski was an integral part of the next two scores as he found Jordan Owen for PY's ninth goal and moments later earned a hat trick on a feed from Yonts. Penn Yan's next two goals were assisted; the first, Adam Stork to Bradley Voigt and the second, Trombley to Modafarri. Penn Yan led at the end three quarters with the score of 12-4.
Penn Yan starting goalie, Cody Richardson, played 36 minutes and was credited with making 6 saves while allowing 4 goals (60%). He was replaced by 8th grader, Brandon Maciejewski, who played the entire 4th and made 3 quality saves while allowing 2 (60%). The PY defense frustrated many Falcon shooters throughout the course of the game but sophomore Michael Thiesmeyer was very impressive on the defensive end the field tonight for the Mustangs as he was credited with 5 blocked shots, a take, and 2 ground balls. Junior Baird Wilber was also very active on the defensive end with 2 takes and 3 ground balls. At the face off "x", Penn Yan went 11/22 on combined efforts by Luppino, sophomore Brandon Grace, Trombley, and Preston Maciejewski. Luppino took the majority of face offs, was 8/16 (50%) and led in ground balls along with senior Tim Yetter with each picking up four. Tonight's victory improves Penn Yan's record to 7-4. This Saturday the Mustangs travel to Fairport to take on the Red Raiders squad with the first face off scheduled for 1:00 PM.
