Fairport 10 - Irondequoit 6

--  There was great tension in the air at Fairport at the start of their game against Irondequoit and in the end the Red Raiders were the winners, 10-6. Beyond the rivalry, both teams are near the top of their divisions and Classes at this point and winning this game was for important bragging rights.

The Raiders set the tone with an immediate goal directly from the face off. Scoring just eighteen seconds into the game when junior attackman Brendan Saylor received the ball form the clearing team, ran it behind the goal and made a close cut to the goal for a one-on-one with Irondequoit goalie Tyler Nash.

Irondequoit tied the game at 1-1 with a goal from Drew Coholan at 7:24, when he made a long left sweep and shot a hard side arm shot past Fairport goalie Kris Sterzin. Fairport finished the quarter with two more goals, both by Senior middie Aaron Jones, who ended the day with four goals and an assist. This first was at 5:21 and the second , with only nine second left on the clock was from a clear when he ran right to the goal and scored with a behind the back shot.

Fairport started the second quarter with four goals in row, amassing a 7-1 lead before the Eagles scored their two goals to end the half with the Raiders up 7-3. Fairport won a number of critical face offs and leading that effort for the Red Raiders was senior midfielder Mike Lehmann who finished the game with twelve of twenty.

Irondequoit, demonstrated resolve and to their great credit could easily have folded at this point, but junior defenseman Ryan Vella, on clearing the ball found himself undefended and took the ball to the goal for a one-on-one with Sterzin. fpt-ironHis goal, at 2:14 sparked another goal buy Coholan, who drove from the top , faded left and took a heard shot into the top corner. The half ended with Fairport up 7-3, but the momentum belonged to the Eagles.

The Fairport defense helped with key defensive takes at the top of the third quarter, and Fairport took the game to 8-3 with 4:54 left in the quarter with another unassisted goal by Jones. Irondequoit came back with a goal by Coholan to finish the quarter with Fairport up 8-4.

In the last quarter Irondequoit got right back into the contest by scoring the next two goals in row, taking the game to 8-6, but Fairport closed out the game with two of their own.

Fairport was two for three in man up while Irondequoit was zero for three.

In previous years, we could expect to see these two teams play more than one contest, but between league alignments, moving Irondequoit into D-2 and Class alignments putting The Eagles in Class B, this will be the only game for the teams this season. That's too bad, because they play great lacrosse together.
