Aquinas / Victor Win Openers
Two games were scheduled for Tuesday. Aquinas posted a 15-0 shutout over Batavia and Victor was the 8-6 winner over host, Canisus.
Aquinas was the home team victor over Batavia with a score of 15-0 tonight at Wegmans' field. The Little Irish controlled the ball for a majority of the game, allowing only eleven shots (four on cage). The Little Irish took a total of 71 shots (41 on cage).
After a close start, the first quarter ended 1-0 and the half concluded at 3-0. Aquinas scored their first three goals in man-up and three more extra man goals by the end of the game.
In the third quarter the Little Irish offense began to click, scoring eight goals in 8 minutes. Leading the scoring for Aquinas was freshman attackman Austin Gorman with 4g-1a. Sophomore attackman Cameron Corsaro also had a strong night with 1g-3a.
The Blue Devils, although lacking in the scoring, did show a strong defensive presence. Junior goalie Matt Landfried led the defense with 26s/15ga (63%). The strong play of Landfried was noteworthy in the second game for the first year varsity Batavia Blue Devils.
Scoring for the Little Irish were senior midfielders Nick Berkompas (2g-2a) and Tiege Lawler (1g), junior midfielders Marc Brondon (1g-1a) and Michael Gray (2a), sophomore midfielders Sean Hickey (1g) and Casey Vogl (1g). Also scoring were Gorman (4g-1a), junior attackman Jasen Tomes (2g), freshman midfielder Anthony Bianchi (2g) and sophomore attackman Cameron Corsaro (1g-3a). Goalies Alan Antinarelli and Kraig Heston each recorded two saves and had no goals against.
Victor over Canisius of Section Six, 8-6 in the season opener for both teams. After taking a 2-0 first quarter lead, the Blue Devils led at the half, 3-1. At the end of there quarters Victor was ahead 5-2 and after fighting off a last minute charge by Canisius, won 8-6.
"They dominated the face-off which allowed them possession time to make their 4th quarter comeback", commented Victor Coach Mark Foeder. Canisius won 12 of 18.
Scoring for Victor were junior attackmen Frank Valenti (3g-1a) and Ethan Payne(1g-1a) and senior midfielders Jason Houtenbrink (2g-1a), Steve Hearn (1g-1a) and Eric Willman (1g). Senior goalie, Mitchell Liegerot made 8s/6ga (57%).
Scoring for Canisius were Anthony Fulham (3g), Ethan Collins(2g-1a) and John Devine (1g). Jeff White recorded 12s/8ga (60%).
