Tournaments Open with Three Upsets
Monday: DAY IN REVIEW: As it happens in the out bracket round, upsets make for excitement and the 2018 edition saw three out of five games won by the lower seeded team. In Class B, Churchville-Chili avenged an earlier loss by beating Spencerport 7-5. Brighton and Canandaigua had no difficulty with their lower seeds by beating Brockport and Gates Chili. In Class D both out bracket games were won by the lower seeds as Waterloo defeated Marcus Whitman 9-7 and Bloomfield-Honeoye beat Mynderse 12-9.
After an 17-4 loss during the regular season, Churchville-Chili came to win during Sectionals and defeated Spencerport 7-5 to advance to the quarter final round. The Saints scored six unanswered goals and held Spencerport scoreless for over 25 minutes. The Rangers were dominated at the faceoff with Owen VanWie finishing 12/16 at the draw and a team leading eight groundballs. Jacob Buck scored the first goal of the third quarter with an unassisted goal at 11:11 to take a 6-0 lead. Spencerport finished out the game with 5 of the last six, but it was not enough to makeup for the first half. Churchville-Chili grabbed possession with two minutes remaining in the game and were able to run out the clock. The Saints move on to the next round and will face top seeded Victor on Wednesday.
After falling 11-13 earlier in the season, Waterloo defeated Marcus Whitman 9-7 in an out bracket sectional game. The game was back and forth for the first half with the scored tied at each step through 5-5. Marcus Whitman scored the game opener with an unassisted goal by Ryan Herod. He finished with 2g-1a for the Wildcats. Dylan DeLucia responded for the Indians to tie the game for the first time. Waterloo’s first lead came at 3-2 off an unassisted goal from Andre Pinkard. Halftime found the score tied 5-5. Waterloo came out of halftime and scored the only two goals of the third quarter to take the first two point lead of the game. DeLucia ad Pinkard each added one goal. The Indians kept up the pressure into the fourth with another goal from DeLucia. The Wildcats were held scoreless for 11 minutes spanning three quarters. After taking the lead, the Indians never gave it up and held the two point lead for the remainder of the game.
Advancing to Wednesday's round after todays wins are, in Class B, #9 Churchville-Chili who will travel to #1 Victor (7PM), #7 Brighton who will go to #2 Thomas (7PM) and #6 Canandaigua who will travel to #3 McQuaid Jesuit (7 PM). In Class D, advancing teams are #9 Waterloo who will travel to #1 Penn Yan (5 PM) and #10 Bloomfield-Honeoye who will travel to #2 Gananda (7PM).
