Penn Yan Wins in Double OT
SATURDAY: DAY IN REVIEW: Although the forecast called for an ice storm throughout the day, nine games were able to be completed on a very cold day. Penn Yan won in double overtime with a goal by Colton Smith. Gananda won an exciting 11-10 victory over Pal-Mac as the combination of seniors Brett Cunningham and Henry Bush combined for seven goals which proved to be the difference. Spencerport and Schroeder had two ties before the Warriors scored two goals in the last quarter for a 6-4 win.
One of the most exciting games of the day was a double overtime win by Penn Yan over Marcellus of Section 3 Colton Smith scored the game winner, with 2:18 left, on a pass from Connor Finger to give Penn Yan the 5-4 win on the road. It was a great day for both goalie, who made spectacular saves throughout the game. Penn Yan sophomore goalie Jeff Kinyoun recorded 15 saves (79%) and Marcellus goalie Rob Seely made 9 saves (64%).
Homer (Section 3) scored five unanswered goals in the first quarter and led at the half 11-3 and then went on to give HF-L their first loss of the season with a 13-9 win at Nazareth College. The Yacavone boys (Dante with 3g-3a and Dylan with 2g-1a) led the Trojans along with Noah Basile (4g-1a). Jonathan Roth (3g-1a) and Garrett Ruff (2g-2a) led the offense for HF-L. Homer remains undefeated at 6-0 and the Cougars fall to 4-1.
Pal-Mac started with a 1-0 lead from the opening face-off as junior Jake Galina scored. Gananda answered back with three unanswered goals and then never lost the lead again. In the second quarter Gananda took a three-goal lead which proved to be the largest lead of the game. Pal-Mac continued to stay close by answering every Blue Panther goal. For Gananda the combination of seniors Brett Cunningham and Henry Bush, who combined for seven goals, proved to be the difference. A key goal came by way of an unassisted goal by Pal-Mac sophomore Evan Hurlbutt with forty-eight seconds left which made it a one goal in favor of Gananda. A late face off win by senior Evan Smith gave Gananda a shot on goal with twenty-four seconds remaining but the key save by Shaun Murphy gave Pal Mac one last chance. Freshman face off middie Jack Miller won 16 of 18 face offs to help McQuaid Jesuit win their game with Wayne. Miller has recorded 101 wins (75%) in six games for the Knights. Freshman attackman Max Ettinghausen (4g) and junior attackman Ryan McEvily (2g-3a) led the offense for McQuaid while junior goaltender Jon Gaglio made five saves (56%).
Canandaigua scored two goals at the start of the second quarter to take the score to 3-2 for Victor, but then the Blue Devils took off with seven unanswered goals to give them the 10-3 win at home. Six players from Victor made the offensive scorebook which was led by Alexander Mabbett with 3g-2a. Chayse Ierlan continued to help the Blue Devils remain undefeated at 4-0 with his five saves (63%).
An out of Section game helped Churchville-Chili to get their first win of the season as they defeated Iroquois (Sect 6). Corey Yunker tied the school record with nine assists. Jake Buck posted seven goals and three assists. 8th grader Liam Podszebka recorded his first take and freshman goalie Mitch Marsh had 6 save(67%).
Other winners today were Marcus Whitman over Watkins Glen and Geneva over Newark.
