We Lose One of our Own
With great sadness, the community was informed yesterday of the tragic death of Brighton graduate Owen Thomas. The three year Varsity player for the Barons, who was graduated this spring, died in a boating accident on Waneta Lake, according to the Shuyler County Sherriff's Office.
The Brighton Schools released a statement: "An active, accomplished student, a multi-sport athlete and just an all-around good soul, Owen touched so many during his school career from (Council Rock Primary School) through (Brighton High School.) We are incredibly saddened by this loss and express our heartfelt condolences to his family and all of those undoubtedly deeply affected by this tragedy."
The second team Monroe County All-League defenseman, who also took face offs for Brighton, was set to attend the University of Rochester in the fall. His brother, Michael, is also an Baron Lacrosse Alumnus.
The Lacrosse Community also grieves with the sad loss of this fine young man.
UPDATED: Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2000 Highland Ave. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 25 Westminster Road. A youth-oriented community remembrance event, hosted by Brighton High School, will be held at 4 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Nazareth College Arts Center, 4245 East Ave.
