Brighton Wins First Game of Season
After a close game last week, Brighton got their first win over the season with an 11-10 victory over Churchville-Chili. This was the first time that Brighton had defeated Churchville-Chili since their 15-14 victory in April of 2010. The Barons scored the first goal and although the game was tied once at 4-4, they never trailed. The Saints kept pace the entire game and scored the last two goals to take the game to on. However, they could not force overtime in the final four minutes.
Brighton scored the first four goals of the game. Brett Randall scored the game opener with Brady McDermott assisting. Between Randall, Brady McDermott and Casey McDermott, one of them was a part of every goal and two of them a part of six goals. The Barons led 4-0 with 7:20 remaining in the first quarter. Churchville-Chili came back with the next three goals in the first quarter and the first goal of the second quarter to tie the game at 4-4. Each of the first four goals were scored by a different Saint. Patrick Sheridan, Nicholas Colucci, Austin Orengo and Jacob Buck each added one. With 11:32 remaining in the second quarter the score was tied.
After that, Brighton scored another series of four unanswered goals to go up 8-4 early in the third quarter. Owen Ronchetti scored the first of his 2g-1a for Brighton. Churchville-Chili kept the game close and scored the next three goals to pull within one. After that, the game was back and forth going into the final quarter. Both teams were heavily affected by the weather, with strong winds taking many passes off their intended targets. Buck scored the final two goals for Churchville-Chili to pull the game within one. The last goal was scored with 3:36 remaining on the clock, but the Saints could not force overtime.
In the cage for Churchville-Chili, Mike Miara recorded 7 saves. Face off midfielder Ryan Mead led the Saints in groundballs with 5. He also finished 9/16 at the draw. Sheridan, Buck and Colucci each finished with two takes.
