Eagles Fight Back to Win
Irondequoit scored the last four goals to defeat Webster Schroeder 5-4 this afternoon. The Warrior did not score in the final 26 minutes spanning three quarters. Sophomore Jack Brennan finished with 4 of the 5 goals for the Eagles. Goalie Patrick Hynes was a major player and finished with 12 saves.
The opening quarter belonged to the Warriors. They scored both goals and took an early 2-0 lead over the Eagles. Collin Griffin and Alejandro Benitez scored for the Warrior with assists from Benitez and Connor Bollin. Irondequoit scored their first goal of the 2017 season with 9:07 remaining in the second quarter. Schroeder responded with another pair. The first was a fast-break goal with Griffin finding Bollin open. Shortly thereafter, Schroeder scored again off a loose ball scrum near the crease that found the back of the net. With 2:16 remaining in the first half, Webster led 4-1. As time began to expire, Irondequoit called a timeout with 0:52 remaining and set up a play. It took nearly the entire time before Brennan scored hi second goal with just 0:01.7 remaining in the half. The Warriors led 4-2 going into halftime.
In the second half, it was all Irondequoit. The Eagles scored three more and held the Warrior scoreless. Brennan scored the next two goals with a feed from Phil Barilla and an unassisted roll dodge. The game was tied at 6:38 remaining in the third quarter. The remainder of the third quarter was back and forth play with no scoring. Within the first sixty seconds of the fourth quarter, Irondequoit scored the game winning goal with an unassisted drive from Barilla.
The remainder of the game showed strong defensive play from the Eagles. Hynes stepped up in the cage, adding five of his 12 saves in the final quarter. The Eagles also killed two different penalties in the final 12 minutes. The final play of the game went to the Warriors. They called timeout with 0:17 left in regulation and tried a play at the cage. The shot went wide and the Eagles held on to their comeback victory.
Schroeder defenseman Stephen Connolly led his team with 5 groundballs. LSM Erik Jakobsze finished with 3 ground balls and 2 takes.
