Fairport Holds Canandaigua scoreless in Two Quarters

- Fairport scored six of the last eight goals to defeat Canandaigua 8-5.  The Red Raiders consistently scored two goals in each quarter; while the Braves scored 4 goals in the second quarter and the final goal of the match.  Fairport scored the opening two goals of the first quarter while their defense held the Braves scoreless for 13 minutes.

Spencer Bell Brannan Maloney scored the first goal for the Red Raiders.  Eight minutes later, Spencer Bell scored the first of his 3g-1a.  Bell scored off a feed from Klay Stuver after an early defensive slide left him open on the crease.  The Red Raiders led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter.  Canandaigua came out of the quarter break and scored three unanswered goals to take the lead.  Will York scored the first goal.  He began the play with an exceptional single player effort to keep possession of the ball against the sideline.  He then began the fast-break that ended with Cam Tallman assisting him across the crease.  Less than a minute later, Mitch Pfeiffer scored with a side-arm shot at the top of the restraining line.  The third Braves goal was scored by York on another fast-break, this time fed by Mark Belles.  With 9:35 remaining in the half, Canandaigua led 3-2.

Fairport scored the next two goals beginning with Stuver assisting Colin Peers with alternating cuts away from the cage by Stuver and towards the cage by Peters.  Dan Vaughn scored the next goal.  He began a drive from the top of the restraining line that was saved by Canandiagua.  The ball went out the endline and he started with it off the dead ball.  He then drove straight to the cage and re-took the 4-3 lead for Fairport.  The Braves scored the final goal of the half to tie the game going into halftime.  Pfeiffer scored his second goal off an inside feed by Eddie Fairben from the top of the restraining line.

In the third quarter, Fairport added another two goals while holding Canandaigua scoreless for the entire quarter, for the second time.  Both goals were scored by Bell with assists from Reese Burek.  The first was the final pass of multiple quick passes around the outside by the Fairport offense.  The second was scored during an extraman offense by the Red Raiders and was an outside shot.  Fairport led 6-4 after three quarters.

In the final quarter, Fairport added another two goals before Canandaigua scored.  Alex Nicastro scored off an effort by assister Bell.  Bell drove to the cage off a one-on-one with a short stick.  After the slide, he crossed the crease to find Nicastro.  The final Red Raider goal was scored by Burek.  He drove from behind the cage and shot backhanded into the net.  Canandaigua’s final goal was scored by Aaron D’Agostino off an strong defensive ride.  D’Agostino checked the ball out of the cross of Josh Gangarossa and directed the ball into the net.  Gangarossa finished with 8 recorded saves.
