NYS Experimental Shot Clock Rule
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), in partnership with the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), has approved a one-year experimental shot clock rule for the 2025 lacrosse season. This rule will be implemented at both the Varsity and Junior Varsity levels across all NYS public high schools.
Key Features of the Rule
60-second shot clock will activate in the following situations:
- Once the ball is advanced into the offensive goal area with possession.
- After Team A satisfies the 10-second count required to advance the ball into the goal area.
Teams must attempt a valid shot-defined as an attempt above the goal line extended (GLE) that contacts the goal, goalpost, goalkeeper, or results in a score-within 60 seconds. Failure to do so will result in the ball being awarded to the defensive team.
Shot Clock Reset Conditions
The shot clock will reset under certain circumstances, including:
1. When the offensive team regains possession in the offensive goal area following a defensive turnover.
2. After a valid shot makes contact with the goalpost or goalkeeper, and possession is regained in the offensive zone.
3. Following a loose ball play-on situation, once offensive possession is confirmed by officials.
4. After a defensive foul, with possession awarded to the offense.
Resets will be signaled by officials with a twirling arm motion, ensuring clarity for players and coaches. The clock remains inactive until a Team A player gains clear possession.
Officials` Signals
Additional hand signals will be used to manage the shot clock:
- Twirl of the hand indicates the shot clock should start or reset.
- A side-to-side wave of the arm indicates the shot clock has started or reset.
- Tapping the top of the head signals shot clock expiration, resulting in a turnover.
Impact of the Rule
This experimental rule is intended to enhance the tempo of play, encourage offensive creativity, and make the game more engaging for players and spectators. It marks a significant evolution in NYS high school lacrosse, with the 2025 season set to provide valuable insights on its impact and effectiveness.
