-- In one of the biggest match ups of the season, the Red Raiders traveled to Penn Yan for a showdown with two of the top team in the Section. Although the Mustangs started out in the driver's seat, Fairport came back with five unanswered goals to grab a 7-5 win.
The Mustangs struck first with senior attackman Ryan Maciejewski scoring from top center after receiving a ball from junior attackman Bradley Voigt who was behind the net at the 9:15 mark. Fairport returned, at 7:48, with an unassisted goal by senior middie Kevin Vaughn driving in from the right side, placing the setting sun right in the eyes of Penn Yan goalie Brandon Maciejewski. Penn Yan scored two minutes later on a play similar to the first. This time junior midfielder Andrew Perl started with a drive from behind and finished with an overpass to the top center. Voigt finished with a sidearm shot past Fairport senior goalie Jake Newkirk. The Mustangs ended the scoring in the first quarter with a goal by Ryan Maciejewski assisted, this time, by junior attackman Rion Davison. The Mustang defensive unit quickly moved the ball up field and found a fast break after passing the ball to Davison. Penn Yan led at the end of the first quarter 3-1.
The second quarter belonged to the Red Raiders as they scored three unanswered goals to tie and then go up by a goal before the half. Senior attackman CT Bove started things off for Fairport, scoring at 8:34 on a crossing pass from senior midfielder Max Gerling. Almost six minutes later freshman attackman Cameron Gebhardt took the ball from Dan McAvoy and scored from the right wing. McAvoy assisted again on the next goal, sending the ball to Justin Kesselring, again on the right wing and the Red Raiders took a 4-3 lead into the halftime break.
The defensive units on both ends of the field were strong throughout the contest. There was only one goal scored in the third quarter. Kesselring lifted the Red Raider lead to 5-3 when he lined himself with his back to the sun and scored on a bounced shot at 2:37.
Fairport increased their lead to 6-3 at the top of the last quarter when Vaughn scored his second goal on a drive from the right side. Pen Yan started a comeback at 6:05 when Voigt scored on a touch pass from Davison. Fairport cut the Mustang momentum when, after a time out, senior midfielder Jake Vakiener brought the ball in from the far sideline, dodged his man and avoided the slide to pop a bounce shot past "Mace" in the goal. Voigt scored the last goal of the game in transition with thirty-eight seconds left the game. Fairport took control after the next face off and held the ball from the Mustangs to secure the win.
