Penn Yan Alumnus Picked for Notre Dame Job
2002 Penn Yan attackman and Notre Dame alumnus (2006) Matt Karweck was recently appointed as an Assistant Coach for the Fighting Irish. Karweck, a Section Five All-Tournament player as a junior, helped the Mustangs win Sectional titles all four years and was part of the 2001 State Championship team as well. At Notre Dame he earned letters all four years while amassing 60g-32a in 52 games.
After graduation, he was the Head Coach for the University of Indiana's club team where he was named Great Rivers Conference Coach of the year and earned a MS degree. He then worked as an assistant coach at the University of Detroit-Mercy for a year and then moved to Merrimack College.
Karweck will join Head Coach Kevin Corrigan's staff. Another ND assistant coach, defensive coordinator Gerry Byrne, also has ties to Section Five. Byrne, who is often sited as one of the best defensive coaches in the country, spent time as an assistant coach at Pittsford while his wife, Tracy, was training as a doctor at Strong Memorial Hospital.
