Pal-Mac Wins First Sectional Title

- Pal-Mac won their first even Section Five Championship with a 16-11 win over Honeoye Falls-Lima.  The Red Raiders lead for nearly the entire game.  The Cougars took an early lead; however, Pal-Mac took over late in the first quarter and slowly increased their lead for the remaining three quarters.  At the largest difference, the Red Raiders led by eight.  In addition to the boys, Pal-Mac girls also won the Section Five Championship with a 16-5 win over Penn Yan (HERE).

Pal-Mac WinsHFL got on the board first with a man-up goal from Andrew Mapstone.  Mapstone finished today’s match with a team leading 4g-1a and was named to the All Tournament team.  Joining Mapstone for the Cougars were midfielder Garrett Ruff and defenseman Matt Haas.  Pal-Mac’s first goal was scored with a drive from the top by Jake Gallina.  Gallina was named All Tournament for the Red Raiders.  HFL went back on top with a fast-break goal from Charlie Pluta with 4:51 remaining.  Pal-Mac tied the score again with a straight drive to the cage for the top left by James Blazey.  Blazey finished the game with 6g and was named Class C All Tournament MVP.  With the game tied and time expiring, the Red Raiders took the ball to the goal.  With 0:38, Blazey made the same drive as before and took the first lead of the game for Pal-Mac.  Pal-Mac WinsOn the ensuring draw, long stick Nate Arnold (also an All Tournament pick) grabbed the loose ball and took it to the cage with 0:26 remaining to go up by two.  Ten seconds later, defenseman Brandon Hawkins grabbed the loose ball of the draw and found Grady Arnold open across the crease for the third goal in 22 seconds.  The face-offs were all taken by Owen Wahl.  Wahl’s stellar performance at the face-off was recognized and he was named to the All Tournament team for his face-off skill.  Pal-Mac led 5-2 after 12 minutes.

In the second quarter, HFL scored the first goal to pull within two.  Pluta scored his second goal off an unsettled situation were he pushed the ball up to the crease and scored for the Cougars.  Pal-Mac took over the scoring and added another five while holding HFL scoreless.  Blazey added two more with Brian Burger, Joe Lyko and Gallina scoring the remaining three.  Pal-Mac led 10-3 at the half.  HFL attempted to push a comeback in the third quarter and outscored Pal-Mac 5-2.  Pal-Mac WinsHowever, the defense stepped up and held the lead for the remainder of the game.  The Cougars never got closer than 4 (12-8 to end the quarter).  Pal-Mac goalie, Jared Hurlbutt finished the game with 11 saves (7 of which were in the third quarter).  He was named to the All Tournament team.  Of the five goals, three were scored on unsettled or uneven play.  Mapstone scored off a fast-break goal (assisted by Henry Millard) as well as a man-up goal.  Jonathan Roth also scored on a man-up goal with a strong single player effort to the cage.

In the final quarter, Pal-Mac scored the first four goals of the quarter to take their largest lead of the game.  The Cougars scored the final three goals of the game.  Mapstone scored his final goal with another unsettled loose ball on the crease.  The final goal of the game was face-off fast-break by Roth.  Overall, only 3 of HFL’s 11 goals were scored in settled even-man offense.  Rounding out the All-Tournament team were Eli Chalmers (Aquinas) and Jon Ecker (Wayne).  A link to the full Class C All Tournament Team in HERE.
