Looking Ahead - Wednesday Class D and B

-  SPORTSFIVE REPORT:  The Section Five Championships are set and will be played over two nights at St. John Fisher College on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Wednesday: Penn Yan vs Pal-Mac 5:00 PM

Penn Yan vs Pal-MacFirst up is the Class D game where second seeded Penn Yan will face top seeded Pal-Mac at 5:00.

Penn Yan is currently 12-6 after defeating third seeded Midlakes in the semi finals with a score of 11-1. 

The Mustangs have outscored their opponents 183-67, averaging 10.2 goals per game while allowing only 3.7 against. Seven players on the 24 man roster have scored over twenty points this year with senior middie Conner Fingar (38g-24a) leading the team in goals and points and Devon Gerhardt (19g-33a) leading in assists. Sophomore attackman Ayden Mowry has 26g-20a and Colt Smith has 34g-16a. Jeff Kinyoun has most of the goal time and has made 94 saves (66%).

In the twelve games that the teams have played, Penn Yan has won eleven. Their one loss in the series was a one-goal game to Pal-Mac in 2017. 

Pal-Mac enters the tournament at 15-3. They average over 14 goals per game while giving up and average of 6.3. There are lots of offensive players on the Raider offense with Grady Arnold (56g-20a) leading in goals, Zack Baker (37g-5a) leading in assists and senior midfielder Jake Gallina (49g-56a) leading in points. Bennett Medyn also figures highly with 43g-11a. Shaun Murphy tends the cage and has recorded 128 saves (56%).

Penn Yan has won twenty-three Section V titles. The Mustangs certainly have experience and know how to win big games, but Pal-Mac is riding high and scoring lots of goals, so this could be a good game.

 


Wednesday: Victor vs Canandaigua 7:30 PM

Victor vs CanandaiguaIn the 7:30 matchup second seeded Victor will play top seeded Canandaigua for the Class B Championship.

Victor is currently 13-5 with two losses by one goal. They played Canandaigua on April 30th and won 12-8 and they won their ticket with a very close one-goal game against Brighton. The Blue Devils has scored 208 goals this year (average 11.6) while giving up 121 (6.7%).

Four players have registered over twenty points. Joey Pezzimenti leads in goal production with 46g-29a and Camden Hay leads assists and points with 35g-44a.  Patrick Carozzi has added 16g-3a while Liam Haller has made 134 saves (58%).

A key factor for Victor this year is face off specialist Regan Endres who has won 232 draws this year (79%). 

Canandaigua is currently 14-4 with an overtime win over Penn Yan, a 10-8 win against Pal-Mac and an 11-10 win over Hilton. The Braves average 10.5 goals per game and give up 5.8 and they one their trip to the big game with a 7-2 win over Webster Thomas. 

Leading in both goals and points is senior midfielder Mitch Pfeiffer with 41g-17a, but Mark Belles is one point behind with 33g-24a and he leads in assists. Junior midfielder Casey Herod has 20g-22a and face off specialist Matt Vierhile has 168 face off wins (56%) along with a team-leading 120 ground balls.

Canandaigua has won nine Championships, the most recent in 2013 when they beat Victor in overtime. Ten years ago, they won a NYS Championship. Victor has won seven Section V Championships including the last five in a row. They won the NYS championships in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and were the runner up last year. 

Both teams have done well this year, playing strong schedules to prepare them for the rigors of tournament play. The last game of the sectional season will be a good one.
