NYS Semi Finals: Section Five Done

It's the end of the road for the two remaining Section Five teams as Pittsford lost in double over time to Ithaca and Irondequoit lost to Jamesville-DeWitt in the NYS semi finals at St John Fisher College. The other western team, Silver Creek from Section VI lost to Cazenovia in the Class C semi final. The winners will play for the State Championships on Saturday in Syracuse.

  --  Special Report  When Joe Bucci scored his third goal of the game he secured a victory for Ithaca as they defeated Pittsford 6-5 in the first game of the semi finals at St. John Fisher College. It Ithaca - Pittsfordtook double overtime for the Little Red to take out the previously undefeated Panthers. Pittsford started off strong, but a late push by Ithaca gave the win to Section III.

Both teams scored a single goal in the opening quarter. Corey Parke scored the first of his team leading 2g-1a with 7:06 remaining in the first quarter with a straight drive at the goal. Three minutes later Riley Lasda scored the first goal for Ithaca. Lasda finished with 1g-1a and was named the NYSPHSAA "God Sport". For Pittsford, Matt Gold received the honor. The first quarter ended with the score tied at 1-1.

Pittsford controlled the Little Red in the second quarter, outscoring them 3-1. They scored the first three goals of the quarter and took a 4-1 lead with 3:18 remaining in the quarter. Parke scored the first goal of the quarter. After taking two minutes off the clock, Parke came around from behind the cage to score. James Burke scored the next goal from the top of the restraining box with a side-arm shot that went off-stick. Burke was fed by Jack Lauroesch. The third goal was by Gold with an assist from Parke during man-up. With 0:46 remaining in the first half, Ithaca scored their lone goal of the quarter. Bucci scored his first goal (unassisted) with a hard side-arm shot from up-top that went just over goalie Conor Quinn's stick. Quinn was strong in the cage for the Panthers. He kept the score low with 16 saves (73%). Quinn finished the first half with 6 saves.

In the third and fourth quarters it was nearly all Ithaca. They held the Panthers scoreless for 26:01. The only goal of the third quarter was by Emile Sassone-Lawless (unassisted). He took a hard outside shot that had a bad bounce on Quinn and went into the back of the net. Pittsford led 4-3 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter Ithaca scored two in a row to tie the score and then take the lead. After a bench foul, Bucci scored on man-up with an assist from Paolo Ciferri to tie the game. Seven Ithaca - Pittsfordminutes later and the Little Red took over the lead for the first time. With 3:19 remaining Adam Fiore scored with an assist from Lasda. Pittsford forced the overtime with a drive from behind the cage by Gold who dumped the ball to Albie DiPasquale for the goal. Pittsford tied the game at with 1:17 remaining and then had one more chance with the ball but could not convert.

It took two overtime periods and 7:46 to determine the winner in today's game. In the first overtime period, Ithaca started with the ball but could not get a shot on cage (two missed shots). Pittsford had an opportunity with 2:29 remaining. Of their two shots, one hit the cage. In the second overtime period, Ithaca once again started with the ball. They took their time. They totaled six shots in the second overtime including three saves for Quinn. With 1:22 remaining, Pittsford got the ball back but struggled with the clear the ball and Jaedon Henderson stripped the ball. Bucci scored the game winning goal with a diving shot from the crease.

In the cage for Ithaca, Max Yavitt finished with eight saves (62%). Leading the ground ball count for Ithaca were Paolo Ciferri and Yavitt with three each. Austin Romantic, Henderson, Luke Mendola, Andrew Troisi and Daquan Rockett finished with two each. For Pittsford, Tyler Aycock led with nine. Burke and Marc Weyl added three each to the total.

  --  Special Report  Section Three's Jamesville-DeWitt continuedJD-Irondequoit their undefeated season with a 9-6 win over the Section Five Champion, Irondequoit. The Red Rams led for three quarters before Irondequoit made a late advance. Although the Eagles got within two goals, the Red Rams kept them from tying the game. The Red Rams were led in scoring by Tim Edwards with 1g-3a. McLaren Brady finished with 3g and Jordan Evan finished with 1g-2a. For the Eagles, Gunnar Miller led with 2g-1a. Also scoring were Nick Doktor (2g) and Greg Coholan (1g-1a).

J-D dominated in the first three quarters. Heading into the final quarter the Red Rams led 6-1. J-D scored the first goal of the game when defenseman Davi Sacco scored with 10:10 remaining in the first quarter. A minute and a half later, Irondequoit scored their first goal when Gunnar Miller fed Doktor from behind the cage. J-D took the lead and kept it with a man-up goal. Jordan Evan assisted Justin Diamond on the outside shot. J-D led 2-1 after the first JD-Irondequoitquarter.

The Red Rams continued to hold the Eagles scoreless for the next two full quarters. Overall, Irondequoit was scoreless for 33:26. J-D added goals from Edwards, Steve Aziz, Deke Burns and Brady during the second and third quarters. In the fourth quarter, Irondequoit tried to make a comeback. Trailing by five, the Eagles scored the first three goals of the quarter to take the game to 6-4. Miller scored the first goal on the crease after receiving the feed from Coholan. Two minutes later the Eagles scored on a fast-break. Matt Wolfe, who was named as NYPHSAA "Good Sport" for Irondequoit, assisted Max Kostyk for the goal. Doktor scored the third goal of the quarter for the Eagles after a broken-clear forced an unsettled situation. The teams traded goal after that, with Brady adding two for the Red Rams. The final goal was scored on an open net by Jordan Evans. For Irondequoit, Coholan and Miller scored.

In the cage for J-D, Dan Distefano finished with 10 saves (63%). Irondequoit's goalie Eric Fisher finished at 50% with nine saves. Leading the ground ball count for Irondequoit was Wolfe with four. JD-IrondequoitMiller finished with three for the Eagles. For J-D, midfielder Hatem finished with a team leading five ground balls. He was named the NYSPHSAA "Good Sport" for J-D. Distefano and Matt Kopp finished with four each for the Red Rams.

  --  Special Report  Cazenovia versus Silver Creek was a battle of halves. Cazenovia dominated the first half and led 12-3 at halftime. In the second half, Silver Creek led 10-3. The Lakers held off the Caz-Silver Creeklate advances to win 15-13. Silver Creek scored three goals in the final minute in a flurried attempt to tie the score and send it to overtime.

Both teams had key performances. For Silver Creek, Zed Williams finished with 5g-1a for the Black Knights. Jon Jimerson (4g) and Zach Williams (1g-4a) also made significant contributions. Zach Williams led his team in ground balls with 10. Zed Williams had the second most with eight. For Cazenovia, Connor Cannizzaro finished with a team leading 6 goals. Joe Nardella (3g-3a) and Sean Cannizzaro (1g-4a) also made significant contributions for the Lakers.

In the cage for Silver Creek, Connor Graves played the entire game. Graves had a tough first quarter, only making two saves and allowing eight goals. Spanning the rest of the game he finished with 11 saves and 7 goals against (61%). In the second half he finished at 67% with six saves and three goals against. He finished the game with 13 saves (46%). For Cazenovia, Ben Romagnoli finished with seven saves.

Cazenovia scored the first two goals of the game with scoring form Nardella and C. Cannizzaro. Silver Creek quickly tied the game with scoring from Sherman Williams and Zed Williams. Six seconds after Zed Williams' goal, the Lakers scored again from a face-off fast-break. Nardella scored doing all the work himself. Nardella took 21 draws for the Lakers and finished at 52% (11/21). Cazenovia scored ten of the next eleven goals spanning the rest of the first half. They held the Black Knights scoreless in the second quarter. They led 12-3 at halftime.

Coming out of halftime, Silver Creek looked like a different team. Caz-Silver CreekThey scored the first four to bring the game within five. Zed Williams scored two and Jimerson scored two. The teams continued to tradegoals until the fourth quarter. With 8:47 remaining, C. Cannizzaro scored his final goal (unassisted) to give the Lakers the 15-9 lead. Silver Creek scored the last four goals of the game to the great delight of the many fans that came from Buffalo for the game. Blaze Curry, Zed Williams, Jimerson and Frank Brown each added one goal for the Black Knights.

The Lakers took 51 shots. C.Cannizzaro, John Greacen and Nardella combined for 37 of those shots. The three Lakers took more shots than the entire Silver Creek team. Leading the ground ball count for Cazenovia were Nardella and Sam Lewis with seven each. Lewis was named the NYSPHSAA "Good Sport" for Cazenovia. For Silver Creek, Frank Brown received the honor.
