Pittsford 13 - Thomas 12

The book for Pittsford: TJ Iuppa (1g-1a), James Burke (2g), Matt Palmer (1g), Thomas Rodenhouse (1a), Alex Kober (2g-1a), Matt Gold (3g-1a), James Purpura (4g-1a), Goaltending: Alex Howell 8s/12ga (53 mins)

The book for Thomas: Kenny Tomeno (2g), Brad Hutton (1g), Jack Hinderland (2g), Kyle Rothfuss (4g-1a), JT Hauck (3g-2a), Goaltending: Don Grace 13s/13ga = 50% (53 mins).

-- special report Senior attackman James Purpura (4g-1a) was the hero, as his unassisted goal in the second overtime period, lifted Pittsford over visiting Webster Thomas 13-12. It was a game of tiny runs, with Thomas holding a three goal lead once and for only a brief time in the first quarter. Both teams had to make comebacks, the most demonstrative of which was Pittsford, who in the last quarter fought back from two goals down to tie the game on a goal by junior midfielder Matt Gold (assisted by Alex Kober) with 0:19 left on the clock.

Thomas scored the first two goals of the game. Junior attackman Kyle Rothfuss drove from top right and scored from the outside at 9:18. Senior midfielder Kenny Tomeno scored on a bounce shot and an assist from JT Hauck to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead which they kept for forty-one seconds. pit-rltPittsford got on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal by Kober when, after fast break clear and a shot that bounced off Thomas goalie Don Grace, he picked up the rebound and popped it in the cage.

Two minutes later, Thomas made it 3-2 when Brad Hutton scored with in inside feed from Rothfuss in man up. Although it appeared that the Titans had a vast majority of ball time, it was a shooting fest in the first quarter, with Pittsford taking eight shots (all on) and Thomas taking fourteen shots (ten on). The Panthers pulled the score back to within one goal when senior middie TJ Iuppa drove from behind the cage and after two switchbacks, scored on a bounce shot to take the score to 3-2 Thomas. The Titans came back a minute later with another drive by Rothfuss with 2:47 left and then took the score to 5-2 with an unassisted goal by Tomeno with 0:38 left. Pittsford came back after the face off and took the ball behind the cage, waiting for the last shot, which came with one second left in the quarter and a goal by Purpura. The Patriots led 5-3 after twelve minutes.

The second quarter belonged to the Panthers, who scored six goals, to three for Thomas, but the scoring was, like the first quarter, back and forth. A difference, however, was that in the first quarter, both teams seemed to "run-and gun" and although the Titans had a number of assisted goals, the offenses for both teams were single dimensional. In the second quarter the offensive units settled down and became more patient while looking for play-making opportunities. The goal production, however came mostly from drives and sweeps at both ends of the field.
pit-rltPittsford briefly came back to a one goal at 10:34 when Gold (3g-1a) scored on a drive from the side and (after scoring) ended up in at the goalies feet. Thirty-one seconds later, Hauck scored on a drive from the top of the box, giving the Titans a 6-4 lead. Both goalies struggled with the next part of the game, as Pittsford scored on their next five shots while Thomas scored on their next three. Taking turns, Pittsford scored, while Thomas was caught exchanging players, as Kober (2g-1a) put one in with an assist from Gold at 8:16. Thomas was next (at 7:47) with another unassisted goal by Hauck (sweep right) and Pittsford junior middie James Burke used the same sweep at his end of the field to take the score to 7-6 Titans. Thomas went up by two again when Hinderland scored on his drive from the left.

Thomas Rodenhouse made a drive to the goal, but dumped the ball off to Gold on the crease and one minute later, Purpura scored on a bounce shot after receiving the ball from Iuppa. The ball bounced off the goalie's stick and up and over his head at 4:57. After the face off, Thomas went right to work, with another unassisted goal by Hauck. Purpura tied the game at 2:54 with an isolation dodge from behind the cage and a shot into the high outside corner. At this point the Panther offensive had settled into a passing pattern, moving the ball on the outside quite well, and building obvious confidence in doing so. The teams were tied as they left the field for the halftime break.

After the break, there was a great deal of transition, but only one goal; an unassisted score by Burke for the Panthers who had twelve shots in the quarter (only two by Thomas). Don Grace made six saves including the last four in a row. Pittsford goalie, Alex Howell saved both of the Titan shots on. Pittsford had a one goal lead after three quarters.

pit-rltThe last quarter saw a series of runs, starting with Thomas with three goals in a row. Hauck made a beautiful cross crease pass after driving from the left to give Rothfuss a goal at 10:59. Hinderland scored thirty seconds later when he got by a Pittsford defender and shot from a step past the goal line extended. After five minutes of transition and simple takes, Thomas had the ball and after forty-five seconds of sweeps and outside passes, Rothfuss threw and outside bounce shot past Howell to give the Titans an 12-10 lead with 4:17 left in the game.

Pittsford was patient in offense and their long-sticks were aggressive. They took advantage of one of the few penalties and scored in man up (Matt Palmer from Purpura on a pass to the wing) at 2:14. With less than a minute, the Panthers slowed their offense and Kober found Gold on the wing for the tying goal with 0:19 left in regulation.

In the first overtime period, Pittsford had two shots; the first by Purpura was saved by Grace. Ryan Sullivan had a big take away to give the Panthers another shot, but Burke's shot was wide. In the second overtime period, Nino DiPasquale won the face off for Pittsford and picked up his own ground ball and moved it to the Panther offense. Purpura took the ball behind the cage in isolation and drove to the cage for the unassisted goal at 3:26.

It was an exciting and interesting game, with simple one-on-one drives and complex passing plays. There were small runs, but neither team dominated the game. Neither goalie had an outstanding day, but both made important, game changing saves. Clears, shots and ground balls were pretty even, but Thomas was the face off winner, taking sixty-five percent on the efforts of Tomeno who won14 of 19. In the end, however, "there can be only one", and after fifty-three minutes, this one went to Pittsford.

Michele scored the second (assisted by Rhodes) and scored during man-up. Clayton Vaughn scored the third (assisted by Michele) and also during man-up. Barbato (from Kaser), Miller (from Palvino) and Fischer (from Palvino) brought the Rangers from down by two to leading the game at the end of the third quarter. With fourteen minutes left to play the Rangers led 11-10.

East Rochester held Spencerport scoreless for the last fourteen minutes while adding two of their own, both during extra-man offense. Vaughn assisted Michele with 5:59 remaining in the fourth quarter and Shalvoy scored unassisted with 4:56 remaining in the game. The Bombers held on the rest of the game to cement the victory.
