Saturday: Schroeder over Irondequoit

Proving how close the Class A teams are this year, Schroeder beat Irondequoit in a close game (6-5). Rush-Henrietta was an 11-7 winner over Churchville-Chili. Livonia beat Aquinas, Brighton beat Gates in OT, Penn Yan beat Amherst and Fairport beat Orchard Park. Other winners included Eastridge, Penfield, Hilton, Pittsford and Newark.

red dot special The games was scheduled to take place weeks earlier, and it was    a highly anticipated game that pitted Webster Schroeder against    highly successful Irondequoit, who up to this week was undefeated. Although the Warriors controlled much of the game, leading 2-1 after the first and 6-2 at the half, the Eagles came back in the second half, scoring the only three goals, the last of which was scored with only 0:19 left in the game. In the end it was Schroeder with the 6-5 win over the visiting Eagles. ws_schr-1 Irondequoit junior defenseman, Sean Davern drew the assignment to slow down Grant Catalino and he, along with well rehearsed slides from adjacent teammates, did a commendable job, stopping a number of drives by the big attackman, that would, for other teams, have resulted in goals against. They started on the first Warrior drive, pushing Catalino away from the goal on his "patented" drive from the goalies' right. The Eagles then knocked down a pass and took the ball to other end of the field to the cheers from the Irondequoit sidelines. Catalino would not go without impact, however, scoring two unassisted goals and adding an assist in the second quarter.

The Warrior win, however, was greatly the result of a stellar day by goalie Zack Marshall, who came up with save after save at key, momentum swinging moments. Marshall, who recorded 7 saves in the both the first and fourth quarters and 3 in the second and third, saw many short range shots as the Eagles found open inside feeds.

Schroeder started the scoring at 7:56, as Mike Tota scored the first of his 2g-1a on a feed from defenseman Drew Palmer when, during a Warrior fast break clear, an Irondequoit defenseman slid too early. The Eagles came immediately back on the next face off, finding their own inside fast break as Greg Wright scored on a feed from Andrew Hart at 7:48. Less than a minute later, Andy Winslow found Tota breaking to the crease to give Schroeder a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Although Irondequoit controlled a great deal of the ball time in the first quarter, due in great part
by extraordinary ground ball efforts and hustle, Marshall took the wind out of the sails by stopping most of the the excellent shots on goal by Irondequoit.

Webster scored the first three goals in the second quarter. Catalino bulled his way on a cut from behind the goal and scored an unassisted goal at 10:43. When Irondequoit tried to substitute a large number of players on a Webster clear, senior attackman Austin Orsini was left alone on the crease and scored on a pass from Tota at 8:18. Catalino scored again, this time with a blazing shot at the feet of Irondequoit goalie Zack Nash. Kevin Coholan scored for Irondequoit with an unassisted outside shot at 3:21. Catalino found Winslow breaking to the crease for a Webster goal that ended the scoring for the half with Schroeder up 6-2. Irondequoit scored all three of the second half goals. In the third quarter the single goal was scored by Andrew Hart with an assist from senior middie Tim Kleehammer at the 3:00 mark. Schroeder led 6-3 after three.

Irondequoit continued to control the pace of the game with the majority of ball time, but Marshall, who came up with seven saves, kept the Eagles from the win. Greg Wright scored in man up at 4:58, taking the score to 6-4 and giving the Eagles a powerful boost. A number of shots off cage and two saves by Nash, kept the Warriors off the scoreboard. Coholan scored (unassisted) in man up with a drive right down the center of the field at 0:19. Webster gained possession on the next face-off and held on the ball and the win in the great example of Section Five lacrosse.

On the ensuing face-off Shawn Runyon picked up the ground ball, quickly passing it up the field to Rynn who looked to the crease for Aaron Jones and the goal. The next goal came as Rynn took an outside shot (assisted by Martin) that hit the goalie and then dribbled into the goal.
