Preseason 2006 - Irondequoit

IRONDEQUOIT
s5 - Last year Irondequoit finished 4th in the Monroe County -1 league with a 6-6 record and finished the season at 10-8. Junior midfielder Mickey Haight was selected to All league team at face off and was the only Eagle to make the first team. Coach John Pratt, who retired after 27 years, was named Coach of the Year. He will be replaced by John Van Etten.

Seeded 5th in the Class A tournament, they finished 5th with a win against Hilton (14-2) and a loss to Schroeder (14-3). iron

The Eagles lost 11 seniors at the end of 2005 including Sean Doyle, who was sidelined last year with a knee injury. Also gone are Zack Pixley (Herkimer), Aaron Bottazzo (Robert Morris), Cory Bottiglier (Geneseo) and Mark Magro in midfield. Gone from the defense are Kyle Byron, Dave Wesolowski, Joe Mason and Dan Nielsen. The Eagles also lost both Dylan Crary and Curtis Boshnack in the goal.

The loss of seniors and a long time coach will make this a tougher season for the Eagles, but there are some players that can help the Irondequoit fans to be optimistic and their long tradition of excellence is formidable. Midfielders Mickey Haight (early to Loyola), Derek Pino (early to Mercyhurst) and Jake Schindler are excellent players at both ends of the field and should be able to gain access to the ball. Junior Nick Kane had a good sophomore year as a defensive middie. Seniors Joe Parker and Kevin Coholan also learned a great deal last year and the Eagles may get some help from junior Zach Nash in the goal. Coach Van Etten may develop a defense around Kyle Sarbou, and Ryan Cordarro.

Irondequoit’s schedule is not particularly challenging this year, with games against the two Greece teams and the two Chili teams. Games against Pittsford and Rush-Henrietta and Canandaigua should be closer than in the past. Ithaca will certainly be their toughest out of league game.
