Saturday: Some Close Ones

With the exception of one make up game, Saturday was "Non-League" Day in Section Five. Penn Yan beat Schroeder 8-7 and Orchard Park beat Fairport 10-9. Surprises came in the form of Canandaigua over Irondequoit 15-3 and Rush-Henrietta over Victor 9-5.
  
Rush-Henrietta started with a 2-1 first quarter lead and improved to 6-3 at the half before beating host Victor 9-5.
  
RH remained very patient on the offensive end against Victor's zone defense. A mouthpiece penalty gave Victor a man up opportunity in the last quarter on which they scored to make it 7-5 with under 5 minutes to play in the game. RH countered with a unassisted goal at 4:06 by senior attackman Sam Hillmon to push the lead back to three. Hillmon scored again with a man up goal at 2:20 with the assist by sophomore attackman Matt Moran. Senior defenseman AJ LaLonde did a great job in guarding Victor's leading scorer, Cory Benulis and limited him to one goal.
  
Leading the offensive for the Royal Comets were senior attackmen Brian McShea (2g-3a) and Sam Hillman(2g-1a). Sophomore attackman Matt Moran and senior middie Nick Garnier each scored 1g-1a while Phil Gordon, Tony Henriques and Justin Rose each added a goal for R-H. Sophomore goalie Matt McShea had 8 saves for R-H who improves to 1-6.
  
Coach Mike Gottko was pleased with the team's performance. "Our players are demonstrating increased composure in tight games. We are starting to show maturity and patience on both ends of the field. I am proud of how our kids have bounced back from tough early season losses."
 
Senior middie Kyle Sullivan (2g) led the scoring for Victor. Senior attackmen Mike O'Hare and Cory Benulis and sophomore midfielder Jason Houtenbrink each scored one goal while Eric Willman and Erick Rogemoser each added an assist. Senior goalie Matt Schmelzlen recorded 16 saves for Victor (4-3).
  
Pal-Mac was the winner over Livonia 10-6 at home on Saturday. Livonia took the early lead with a goal by junior attackman Scott Mosher. Pal-Mac came right back with goals by senior attackman Owen Campbell and senior middie David Bennett. Sophomore attackman Brian Sciera tied the game at two with the assist going to junior attackman John Dalberth. Livonia then went ahead 4-3 on another by Mosher. Pal-Mac ended the half up 5-4.
  
In the third quarter Pal-Mac scored twice on goals by senior midfielder Matt Walker and another by Campbell. Mosher scored his third goal of the game to keep the Bulldogs close.
  
“We’d been there before” stated Coach Sciera. "We were behind vs. Haverling and Waterloo in the 4th quarter and came back and pulled out those two games.”
  
Livonia peppered Pal-Mac senior goalie Dlugosh in the 4th quarter. The bulldogs took 15 shots in the 4th quarter and only Senior middie Josh Hendrickson was able to get one past Dlugosh.“We were getting the shots, the more we took the better he got,” said Sciera
  
Bennett and Campbell put the game out of reach by scoring 3 goals in the fourth quarter.

Bennett finished with 3g-2a, Campbell and Walker with 3g each and Sinopoli with 1 goal. Jeremy Reeves added 3a and Matt Christ added 1a for Pal-Mac.
The defense of seniors Mike Beck and Josh Polle and juniors Mike Hardin and Dave Merritt were instrumental in the win. Dlugosh finished with 15 saves for Pal-Mac (3-5).
  
Senior middie Josh Hendrickson finished with 2g-2a and junior attackman Scott Mosher finished with 3g. Brian Sciera added 1g and junior middie John Dalberth added 1a for Livonia, whose junior goalie, Aaron Jamison had 15 saves. Livonia drops to 4-2.
  
Penfield boosted their record to 5-0 with a win over Hilton 13-3 at Irondequoit. Senior midfielder Mike Thon continued a banner week with 4g-1a and 8 for 8 in the face off department. In the earlier game at Irondequoit High School, Mike's brother, Joe produced a number of dramatic take-aways as a long stick defenseman on the Mercyhurst College lacrosse team who beat Bryant 12-6.
  
Penfield took the lead early in the game, ending the first quarter at 8-0. Senior attackmen Tim Pfeffer and Mike Smith each scored 2g and Trevor and Connor Rice each added 3a for the Patriots.
  
Sophomore attackman Brett Bridges led the effort by Hilton with 2g. Freshman attackman Mitch Ritchie produced the third goal and sophomore Jeff Delong scored his first varsity points as he recorded 2a. Sophomore goalie Aaron Donahey had 19 saves for the Cadets (2-5).
  
 Aquinas beat Waterloo at home on Saturday with an 11-4 scored as six different players hit the scorebooks. Junior attackman Nick Vincent led the offense with 2g-2a, while junior middie Mark Pincelli scored 3g and junior middie Pat King added 2g-1a. Junior attackman David Schmandt scored 2 goals and Chris Roland Marc Brondon each added 1g-1a for the Little Irish.
  
Coach Ewing thought the defense played the best game of the season. " Don Bringley, Joe Edd, Ed Giorgi, and Alex Gray played very well at defense, but it was a team effort all around." Ewing also credited junior middie Chris Gionta and and freshman middie Michael Gray with excellent performances. Senior goalie Jason LaShomb had 13 saves and the man-down unit was a factor in the win for Aquinas who improves to 5-2.
  
Scoring for Waterloo were senior middie TJ Radka (1g-1a), senior attackman Gordy Lahr (1g), junior middie Winston Boyd (1-0), and senior attackman Matt Haws (1-0). Senior goalie Pat DeBolt had 12 saves for the Indians (4-4).
  
Fairport scored the first three goals and looked like they would win a big one, but Orchard Park of Section Six scored seven straight goals in the second half to secure the win, 10-9 at Hobart College. Fairport had an 8-3 lead with 6:50 left in the third quarter before the Quakers (7-1) took off. Senior midfielder Chris Lindner scored one of his two goals at the 2:23 mark of the last quarter to bring Fairport to within one goal.
  
Sophomore midfielder Tom Rynn and sophomore attackman Mike Danylyshyn each scored 2g-1a and junior attackman Pat Reilly added 1g-2a for the Red Raiders who after dropping two games against tough teams fall to 5-2. OP, ranked #5 in the this week's NYS poll, was led by Matt Ciambella with 2g-3a.

Canandaigua scored a surprising 15-3 win over visiting Irondequoit at Evans Field on Saturday. Taking a 5-1 lead in the first quarter, the Braves extended their lead to 8-1 at the half and 12-2 at the end of the third.

The CA defense of Mike Serron, Ed Walsh, Jay Woodworth, LSM Ryan Cunningham and Short stick D-Mid Charlie Sauter held Irondequoit to 13 shots. Junior goalie Dan Serafine played the first 3 1/2 quarters and made 4 saves and senior goalie Billy
Thomson played the last 8 minutes and made 1 save for Canandaigua.

Senior midfielder Dan Groot scored 4g-1a, senior attackman Aaron Manzer scored 3g and senior attackman Chris Mulheron added 2g-4a for the undefeated Braves (6-0). Also scoring for the Braves were AJ Groot (2g-1a), Brian Hadsell (2g) and Jeremy Nemecek (1g).
  
"We played really well, the best game we've played all year," Coach John Johnson told the Rochester D&C . "I expected it was going to be a one- or two-goal game."
   
Senior middie Zack Pixley scored 1g-1a and junior attackman Joe Parker sophomore middie Kevin Coholan each added a goal for the Eagles (4-3). Visiting Penn Yan took a 4-2 first quarter lead to a 6-3 halftime on their way to the 8-7 victory at Webster Schroeder. The Mustangs led throughout the game, but the Warriors came close behind the efforts of junior goalie Dennis Costanza who made 13 saves, including 7 in the second quarter, many at point blank range.
  
Not to be outdone, the Mustangs saw great defensive efforts by juniors Preston Christenson and Tristan Keas, freshman Dana Wilber and sophomore Michael Manley. Sophomore goalie RJ Wickham recorded 6 saves for the Mustangs
  
On the offensive end of the field, Penn-Yan (4-2) out shot Schroeder 30-17. Senior attackman Jon Van Houten scored 3g-3a and junior midfielder Steven Carlson added 2g-2a. Junior middie Dan Mesler scored 1g-1a and Dan McGuffie and Michael Manley each added a goal.

Senior midfielder Mike Catalino scored 3g, won 12 of 18 faceoffs and led the Warriors in ground balls with 9. Senior attackman Tom Costanza had 3a, Jack Mooney added 1g-1a and Chris Ferry and Jay Wilmes each added one as did senior middie Jason Cirulli who scored his first Varsity goal for Schroeder (3-4).

The visiting Panthers from Geneva won their game against the home team Knights of McQuaid Jesuit, 15-6 as seven different players scored. Senior attackmen Mike Toner (3-3) and Chris Toner (3-2) led the way. Senior middies Henry Heaton (3-1) and Matt Warner (2-1) were joined in the scoring by sophomore Greg Bonney (2-2) in the Geneva win. Senior goalie Nick Sharman recorded 12 saves for Geneva (4-2).
  
The Panthers led in each of the quarters, starting with a 4-2 lead in the first and a 7-2 lead at half. The third quarter was Geneva outscore the Knights 8-3.
  
Junior attackman Marty Farchione and senior attackman Tyler Rubino each scored 1g-1a for McQuaid Jesuit. Scott Rubino, Brendan Clar, Mark Hanna, Dan Sturnick each had a goal for the Knights (2-4).
