Game Reports: Tue - 04/20/04

The somewhat common "blowouts" were overshadowed today by two very exciting games as Penfield/Fairport and Thomas/Brighton both were resolved in the last few seconds of the game.

The last game of the game of the day was an exciting one at Brighton and under the lights. Brighton took the early lead with two goals before the Titans returned with three of their own by sophomore attackman, Kevin Kemp. At the end of the first quarter it was Thomas 4-3.

The second quarter was much like the first with better defensive efforts by both teams. Freshman attackman, Dom Scalzo scored the last goal of the quarter for Thomas with no time left on the clock and the teams took the half-time break with the Titans up 7-5.

The third quarter ended with Webster up 13-8 , but the Barons would not give up as they battled back to tie the game at 15 with one minute remaining. Thomas midfielder, Nick Dalton won the face-off and proceeded to bring the ball down to Chris Calahan who passed to attackmen John Schumacher who hit Sophomore Kevin Kemp on the Crease for the goal with 0:03 seconds remaining.

Senior goalie, Boomer Concordia made 15 saves for Thomas (4-2)

Junior attackman, James Ryan scored 3g-4a and senior middie, Spencer Durland added 5g for Brighton (3-2). [No report from Brighton.]

Everyone "knew" this would be an exciting game and there could be no disappointment as host Penfield beat Fairport 7-6 in the last 0:11 seconds of the game. The game plans were very different, as Penfield started in a high pressured "go to the goal" style offense while Fairport demonstrated patience and ball control in their offensive sets .

Fairport scored the only two goals of the first quarter behind the efforts of Tom Rynn and Bill Durdel.

The Patriots returned in the second quarter with 3 goals , while holding the Red Raiders scoreless. Senior middie, Dennis Bell scored two unassisted goals and sophomore middie, Kelly McKenna scored the other. Penfield led at the half, 3-2.

Fairport scored first in the third (Pat VanHall, unassisted at 8:44) and the defensive units of both teams held off numerous scoring opportunities. Penfield goalie, Brian Dell (14s) made some dramatic "step up" saves at key moments, and the same could be said of Fairport goalie, Sean Miller. In the last 3:22, Penfield scored two goals as junior midfielder, Mike Thon scored on a feed from Trevor Rice and senior attackman, Ryan O'Donnell scored at 1:18 on an assist from Tim Pfeffer. The quarter ended at 5-3.

In the low scoring game a two goal differential appeared to be a difficult obstacle, but Fairport fought back to a tie with goals by sophomore attackman, Pat Reilly (assisted by Pat VanHall) and senior middie, Pete Gibbons who scored an unassisted goal straight from the face-off just seven seconds later.

The score remained tied until O'Donnell scored on a feed from McKenna with 1:09 and Penfield was up. Fairport returned eight seconds later with another Durdel from Reilly goal at 1:01. Both teams had a chance to to score in the last minute but it was Penfield at the 0:11 second mark as Mike Thon scored on an attack feed. [Report from Fairport received after atricle written.]
