Looking Ahead: Wednesday Championships
May 29, 2017 - The Section Five Championships are set and will be played over two nights at St. John Fisher College on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Wednesday: Waterloo vs Penn Yan 5:00 PM
First up is the Class D game where fourth seeded Waterloo will face the second seeded Penn Yan at 5:00. Waterloo is currently 9-9. They have averaged six goals per game. The offensive leaders are Andre Pinkard with 24g-7a and Adam Jensen with 22g-17a. Senior goalie George Williams has had most of the time in the goal for the Indians and has recorded 231 saves (61%). Twelve players made the offensive scorebook this year. Waterloo has not won a Sectional title but have been in the finals five times, four with Penn Yan and one with Geneva.
Penn Yan also enters the tournament at 9-9. In the first two rounds of the Class D tournament they have scored thirty-two goals and allowed four. During their regular season they averaged 8.3 goals per game while allowing 6.1 goals against. Senior goalie Kyle Welker has had most of the goalie time and has recorded 111 saves (60%). On the other end of the field junior midfielder Austin Blumbergs is the leader in goal production with 42g-11a and junior Ben Emerson is the assist leader with 24g-29a. Connor Finger (28g-15a) is the third player with over forty points this season.
The Mustangs have won twenty-one Section V Championships and, in 2001 won the NYS championship.
Wednesday: Canandaigua vs Victor 7:30 PM
In the 7:30 matchup, third seeded Canandaigua will play top seeded Victor for the Class B Championship.
The Braves enter the game with a record of 13-5. Leading the offense is Devin Andrews who has 70g-47a this year, but he is not the only threat as Carson Greene has 43g-30a and Mark Belles has 30g-17a. The Braves have scored 223 goals (average 12.4 per game and have allowed 140 goals against (7.7 per game). In the cage Brandon Moore (53%) and Tim Rice (56%) have shared most of the time.
Victor is currently 15-3 with one goal losses to Brother Rice and Jamesville-DeWitt and an 8-5 loss to Canandaigua. Twenty players have made the offensive scorebook for the Blue Devils this year. They have scored 213 points this year, averaging almost 12 goals per game while allowing only 5.6 goals against. Scoring comes from many directions. Andrew Russell (33g-13a) lead in goals and points and Sam Lambert leads in assists with 17g-26a, but seven players have recorded over twenty-five points, including Mitchell Cain (31g-14a) and Zach Estabrooks (30g-7a). In the cage is Chayse Ierlan, a 58% goalie with 135 saves.
Of course, everyone knows that the blue Devils have won two New York State Championships in the last two years. They have won a total of five Championships, including the last three in a row. The Blue Devils have played against Canandaigua over twenty times, with the Braves winning sixteen of twenty-three times. Since 2014, however, Victor is 5-1. In their meeting on May 6th, a three goal run in the last quarter gave the Braves the win.
