Week in Review: Week 7

- It is hard to imagine, but we are entering the final week of regular season games. The last games will be played on Friday and the tournaments will begin on May 21st. Two hundred and forty-seven games have been played thus far. Sixty-four (of seventy-three out of Section games scheduled) have been played. Section five teams have won forty-five (70%). Victor, Thomas, HF-L, Gananda and McQuaid Jesuit continue at the top of their leagues.

Looking Back

Overtime wins were earned by Schroeder in their 11-10 game with Thomas, Pittsford in their 10-9 win over Brighton and by Gananda in their 8-7 win over Pal-Mac.

On Monday, In a close game with four ties, Hilton scored three goals in the last quarter to beat Irondequoit 9-7.

On Tuesday, there were fifteen games played. The Greece Storm boosted their record to 10-3 with a 13-12 win over visiting HF-L (11-3). Adrian Romero scored 6g and Matt McHale added 5g for the Storm while Garrett Ruff scored 5g-1a for the Cougars. 

McQuaid at IrondequoitPittsford beat Brighton in overtime and Schroeder won the battle in Webster in overtime. Eastridge fought back from a 4-9 deficit early in the third quarter to defeat Gates Chili 10-9.

The Finger Lakes Tournament began with three good matchups. Geneva found revenge for their overtime loss earlier in the season as they defeated Gananda 19-9 behind the offensive effort by Sam Miller who posted 9g-5a. A strong fourth quarter for Wayne gave them the 9-8 victory over Pal-Mac. Zach Boyatzies scored 2g-2a for the Eagles. Bloomfield-Honeoye scored two goals in their fourth quarter to give them a 7-6 win over Waterloo. Alex Roach scored 5g in the game.

Thursday was also a busy night with thirteen games. Pittsford scored the opening goal and never trailed in their 5-3 win over Hilton. The low-scoring game had the Panthers holding the Cadets scoreless for the entire third quarter.

A last quarter surge by the Warriors gave Schroeder an 11-9 win over HF-L. Fairport beat visiting Penn Yan as Spencer Bell scored 2g-2a to lead the Red Raiders.

 Jake Rapp scoring the game winning goal in overtime to give Gananda an 8-7 win over Pal-Mac and Geneva beat Wayne by one goal (5-4).

Friday saw Penfield beat West Seneca-East and Canandaigua beat Hamburg 9-5.

Aquinas at BrightonThere were thirteen games played on Saturday including close games as Penn Yan beat St. Joes 5-4. Colton Smith (2g) scored game winner on a feed from Conner Fingar (1g-1a).

Schroeder defeated Hilton 8-6. Starting  the final quarter, Schroeder led 5-3. Justin Mosher scored the first goal of the quarter to put Hilton within one (5-4). The Warriors responded with three unanswered goals from Erik Jakobsze, Collin Griffin and Hunter Olsen.

Irondequoit fought back from a 4-8 deficit to defeat Spencerport 15-12. Jack Brennan was the big scorer for the Eagles with 7g.

We posted an article on Wednesday noting that over 70 Section Five Alumni were on teams playing in the National Championship Tournaments. 

Last week the Connors & Ferris Players of the Week were Klay Stuver (Fairport) and Chayse Ierlan (Victor).

Looking Ahead

As we wrap up the regular season there are about thirty games scheduled for this week and there will certainly be some good ones.  Among our picks are:

  • Monday: Penfield at Fairport

  • Tuesday: Penn Yan at Geneva, Haverling at Wayne, McQuaid Jesuit at Aquinas, Hilton at Canandaigua and Victor at Irondequoit.

  • Thursday: HF-L at Brighton, Churchville-Chili at Gananda, Greece at Geneva, Waterloo at Livonia-Avon, Pittsford at Thomas and Pal-Mac at Canandaigua.

  • Friday: Corning at Fairport and Penn Yan at Penfield. 

  • Saturday: The tournament seeding will be posted.

These are just some of the games of interest this week. Of course, if your team is playing it is the game of the week.
