Penn Yan Moves On to Championship Games

-  SPORTSFIVE REPORT:  After a broken Cazenovia clear, Austin Fingar moved the ball up field in transition and at the left crease found senior attackman Craig Gerhardt who then sent the ball cross-crease to senior Tate Stewart who, in overtime, scored his first of the game and gave the Mustangs a trip to the Championships in Middletown.

Penn Yan vs Caz

It was most certainly a game of two halves, as the Mustangs dominated in the first half, leading by as much as six goals and entering the halftime break up 8-3. Cazenovia, who had won the last three years in the same semifinal game against the Mustangs would not giving up and returned with five out of six goals in the third quarter and then two more at the start of the fourth quarter to take a 10-9 lead with just over seven minutes left in the game. With just over two minutes left in regulation Penn Yan got the ball in their offensive end and Coach Brian Hobart called a time out. Shortly thereafter Sean Emerson scored on a nice pass from Austin Fingar to tie the game at 10-10. On the ensuing face off the Lakers got possession and Coach Jim Longo called a time out. The Lakers started with the ball, but the Mustangs took it away and then down field hitting a pipe, just as time ran out.

Exciting performances came from a number of Mustangs including Austin Fingar (3g-2a) who, in the first half of the game set the tone winning many face offs. Craig Gerhardt (3g-2a) and Sean Emerson gave Penn Yan multiple dimensions and when one player was covered hard by the very competent Red Ram defense another took up the banner. Gage Ponsetti had a number of key one-on-one saves and ended the day with twelve saves (55%).

The Mustangs will play Cold Spring Harbor on Saturday at Middletown High School at 1:30 pm. The Seahawks defeated Pleasantville 12-10 and are currently 17-1.
