Penfield Holds Lead to Defeat Eagles

Penfield scored the opening goal of the game and although Irondequoit tied the game three times, the Patriots never trailed.  Penfield played a strong offensive game and held possession for large chunks of time.  Their settled offense forced Irondequoit to rush when they did have the ball on offense.  Patrick Hynes was a defensive standout for the Eagles.  He repeatedly made saves that he had no business making and kept Irondequoit in the game. Tuesday: Taylor Clements Wins for Newark

Taylor Clements (3g) scored the game winning goal with 1:02 remaining in the game to break an 8-8 tie and give Newark a 9-8 win over host Midlakes. Robert Middlebrook scored 4g for the Eagles. Fairport took a 6-0 first quarter lead and never looked back in their game with Brighton. Jake Santini made eight saves (67%) and Reese Burek led the Red Raider offense with 4g-2a. Full Story

Wednesday: Brighton Ends HFL Undefeated Season

Brighton bounced back from yesterday`s defeat at Fairport and ended the undefeated season of HF-L, the last team in the Section with a perfect record. Shots came from many angles as five Barons scored along with leaders Brady McDermott (4g-2a) and Brett Randall (4g-2a). Full Story

Thursday: Victor Over Thomas

In what some were calling a possible Class B final, Victor took an 8-1 half to a 17-3 win against Webster Thomas as nine Blue Devils made the offensive scorebook. Freshman attackman Joey Pezzimenti led the scoring with 4g-1a. Chayse Ierlan made 13s (87%) in 38 minutes for Victor. Nick Mabe scored 2g for Thomas. Full Story

Harold Scores In Overtime for Haverling

Haverling scored four of the last five goals in their 13-12 overtime win over McQuaid Jesuit.  The Rams led with 5 minutes left in the game, before McQuaid Jesuit scored their first goal of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 12-12 with 4:54 remaining.  The game winning goal was scored by Ethan Harold (unassisted) with 1:27 remaining in the first overtime period. Gates Chili Fights Back in Fourth Quarter for Win

Gates Chili scored two goals in the final minute to secure their first lead since the game opening goal and defeat Eastridge 14-13.  The Lancers led for nearly the entire game and had two different 5 goals leads over the Spartans.  Gates Chili scored five of the last six and eight of the last ten goals in the comeback win.  The game winning goal was scored by Nicholas Ehmann with 0:11 remaining on the clock. Irondequoit Uses Third Quarter to Spring to Victory

Irondequoit held off the late advances by Churchville-Chili to defeat the Saints 14-12.  The game was close for the first half, before Irondequoit took off in the second half on the back of Jack Brennan.  Brennan had 1g-2a in the first half and 6g-1a in the second half.  His was part of 7/9 goals in the second half.  Full Story

Friday: Batavia Wins Second Game

DAY IN REVIEW: Avon started off with a strong first quarter, ending it up 6-4, but Batavia returned with six of their own before the half and stayed ahead for good, and their second win in a row. Seven Blue Devils made the scorebook, led by Joe Allegue (4g-3a).Nick Varno led the Braves offense with 4g-1a. Full Story

Braves Defeat Blue Devils

Canandaigua handed Victor their second loss of the season 8-5.  They took off in the second half, outscoring Victor 7-2 in the last 24 minutes.  Victor has won the last 5 times that they have faced the Braves, with Canandaigua’s last win coming in May of 2013 to win the Sectional Title in overtime. Canandaigua handed Victor their second loss of the season 8-5. They took off in the second half, outscoring Victor 7-2 in the last 24 minutes. Victor has won the last 5 times that they have faced the Braves, with Canandaigua's last win coming in May of 2013 to win the Sectional Title in overtime. The staff at BLaxFive.NET are often asked for information about rankings of teams for seeding. The power-based system used to seed the Sectional Tournaments is based on the FINAL win/loss records of each team played. Monday: Aquinas and Haverling Win Out of Section

There were six games played on Monday. Aquinas had a close one with St. Francis (Section VI) with Casey Hochheimer scoring 2g-1a and Evan Kelly adding 2a for the Irish. Haverling won their game against Watkins Glen with Jonathan Deats leading the Rams with 2g-6a. Trey Kinner had 7s (70%) in the cage. Full Story

Wayne Wins on Cradle for a Cure Night

Wayne hosted their fifth annual “Cradle for a Cure” event today and defeated Gananda 23-5.  The “Cradle for a Cure” event began five years ago as a fundraising/awareness event after a local lacrosse player received a cancer diagnosis.  Every year since, Wayne has hosted a multigame event with boys and girls lax with the hope of donating to both local charities and a local family in need of assistance.  Earlier in the evening in the girls’ contest, Waterloo defeated Wayne 17-9 (HERE). Tuesday: CA Over Penfield and Geneva Over PY

Canandaigua attackman Devin Andrews scored 7g-2a for the Braves (11-4) when they beat Penfield (6-7) at home tonight. Joe post was 21-26 at the draw and added 11 ground balls for CA. Geneva (8-4) held Penn Yan (6-7) scoreless in the second half in their 5-1 victory this afternoon. Geneva goalie Jacob Drennen recorded 24 saves for an amazing 96% while Sam Miller led the offense with 1g-3a. Full Story

Wednesday: Mynderse Takes Marcus Whitman

DAY IN REVIEW: The Mynderse Blue Devils used steady scoring for their win against Marcus Whitman today. Eight players made the offensive book for Mynderse. Leading the list were Brad Sandroni (2g-4a), Jake Curran (3g-2a) and Owen Lorenzetti (2g-3a). Full Story

Pittsford Holds Fairport Scoreless in Fourth Quarter

Pittsford scored the last two goals of the game in their 8-5 win over Fairport.  The Panthers held the Red Raiders scoreless for the final 15 minutes of the contest.  Full Story

Jensen Leads Waterloo in Win

Waterloo took over with five straight goals spanning the end of the second and beginning of the third to defeat Bloomfield-Honeoye 10-7.  The first half was close with Waterloo scoring the opening with an unassisted goal from Adam Jensen.  B-H responded with back to back goals to take the lead.  Jon Marble and Tyler Joslyn both scored for the Pride.  The Indians scored the final goal of the quarter to tie the game at 2-2. Saturday: Thomas Over Hamburg

Webster Thomas played a close one with Hamburg (Section VI). The Titans led 5-3 at the half and the teams traded goals in the second half. Brad Smith and Nick Mabe each had 2g-2a for Thomas. Fairport (11-3) travelled south to beat Corning (12-4) of Section IV with TJ Hendricks (1g-2a) and Jake Bucci (2g-1a) leading the Red Raider offense. Full Story

Churchville-Chili Holds Off Late Schroeder Push

Churchville-Chili scored the final two goals in the fourth quarter to re-take the lead and defeat Schroeder 7-6.  The battle was a back and forth defense match between the two teams.  Schroeder goalie Anthony Deleo recorded 10 saves (59%) and Churchville-Chili goalie Mike Miara recorded 15 saves (71%). After a close start, Fairport scored twelve of the next thirteen goals for their win at Penfield. Nine different players made the offensive book for th Red Raiders, with Reese Burek (2g-2a) and TJ Hendricks (3g) leading the list. Jake Santini made 8 saves (62%) in the cage for the Red Raiders who finished their regular season at 8-8. Full Story

Finnegan Leads Gananda to Victory

Gananda took over the lead in the second quarter and never let go.  The Blue Panthers defeated Gates Chili 16-14.  It was senior night at Gananda, the first three goals were all scored by seniors.  Alex Buchko scored the opening goal 0:52 into the game with Jacob Thomas and Ryan Finnegan adding the next two. Webster Thomas took their first lead with an overtime goal from Colin Horan in the second overtime period to defeat Penn Yan 9-8.  The Mustangs led for major portions of the game and had a three goal lead with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.  Thomas scored the final four goals of the match-up to force overtime and take the win. Keenan Leads Victor over Fairport

Victor trailed 5-2 before coming back to a 10-8 win over Fairport to end the regular season.  The Blue Devils finished 13-3 and the Red Raiders finished 12-4.  Full Story

Friday: Regular Season Ends with Victor Over Fairport

The last games in the regular season were played today including Victor`s come-from-behind win over visiting Fairport. Victor trailed 5-2 before coming back to a 10-8 win over Fairport to end the regular season. The Blue Devils finished 13-3 and the Red Raiders finished 12-4. Full Story

Monday: The Tournaments Begin

With one exception, the brackets played out as seeded on the first day of the 2017 tournaments. In the Class B, Irondequoit beat McQuaid. Irondequoit sophomore attackman Jack Brennan scored 4g-1a to lead the Eagles and in the cage, Patrick Hynes made 12 saves (80%). Irondequoit will move on to Victor on Wednesday. Full Story

Tuesday: Aquinas Takes Out Geneva

The Class A tournament bracket held as Hilton (#4) defeated Greece Lightning and Penfield (#3) beat Rush-Henrietta (#6). Nine different Cadets made the scorebook, led by Jordan DePetres with 3g-1a. Shawn Doran won 13 of 14 draws for the winners and Jacob VanWuychuyse made six saves (100%).  Full Story

Tenth Seeded C-C Advances to Semi's

Tenth seeded Churchville-Chili held off the late press by second seeded Webster Thomas to defeat the Titans 15-14.  Coming into the contest today, Thomas had previously defeated Churchville-Chili 20-15 in the second game of the season and had finished the regular season with a 13-3 record.  Full Story

In the biggest upset in many years, Churchville-Chili (#10) beat Webster Thomas (#2) 15-14 in a quarter final matchup tonight. Coming into the contest today, Thomas had previously defeated Churchville-Chili 20-15 in the second game of the season and had finished the regular season with a 13-3 record.  Full Story

Friday: Top Two Teams Advance

The top two teams advanced in the Class A and Class C semifinals today. `Pittsford (#1) will take on Fairport (#2) and HF-L (#1) will play Pal-Mac (#2) in the championship rounds next Tuesday. Full Story

Pittsford Makes Finals for 4th Straight Year

Top seeded Pittsford defeated fourth seeded Hilton 13-5 in the first of the two back-to-back Semi-Final matchups played at Webster Thomas.  The game was a close for the first half, before Pittsford scored five unanswered in the third quarter and pulled ahead.  The Cadets scored the final goal of the game, but Pittsford scored eight unanswered goals, spanning the second through fourth quarters.  Pittsford advances to the Finals for the sixth time in eight years (2 wins in 2015 and 2011; 3 losses in 2016, 2014 and 2010). Fairport Returns to Finals After 2 Year Absence

Second seeded Fairport came to play and defeated Penfield 13-9.  The Red Raiders scored the first four goals and held Penfield scoreless into the second quarter.  The Patriots fought back hard for the entirety of the game, but never got closer than 2 goals.  Fairport was led in scoring by TJ Hendricks with 4g-2a.  Jake Bucci (4g-1a) and Spencer Bell (3g-1a) also added significant scoring for the Red Raiders.  Fairport advances to the Finals for the sixth time in nine years (3 wins in 2014, 2012, 2010 and 2 losses in 2011 and 2009).  They have not reached the finals since their win over Pittsford in 2014. Victor Heads to Finals for Fifth Straight Year

In a game were the score was closer than the contest, Victor defeated Brighton 13-9.  The Blue Devils had an 8 goal lead in the fourth quarter (13-5), before Brighton scored the final five goals.  The Barons kept the game close earlier, before Victor began to slowly pull away.  The Blue Devils held Brighton scoreless for 19 minutes spanning the entire third quarter.  Victor advances to the finals for the fifth consecutive time (three time defending Champion). May 27, 2017 - Third seeded Canandaigua scored the first three goals of the game and never trailed in their 16-8 win over tenth seeded Churchville-Chili.  After defeating the seventh (Ath/Ody) and second (Thomas) seeds, the Saints fell to the Braves.  Churchville-Chili kept the game close for a half, before Canandaigua held them scoreless in the third quarter and extending their lead to 12-5. Saturday: Championship Matchups are Finalized

The 2017 championship matchups are now set after the semi finals in the Class B and Class D tournaments. The only "bracket brake" was Waterloo`s (#4) victory over top seeded Gananda in the Class D semifinals. Top seeded Victor won their contest with Brighton and Canandaigua (#3) beat Churchville-Chili. Penn Yan avenged their regular season lost of Haverling to make it to the finals where they will face Waterloo. Full Story

The head Coaches of Section Five meet last week to listen to the presentations of thirty players who had been nominated for All-American and All-Academic awards. The awards, sponsored by US Lacrosse, identify some of the best players from each area around the country. Each of the thirty-six coaches in the section has a vote on each of the awards. Full Story

Pittsford Wins Fifth Title

Pittsford won their fifth Section Five Championship with a 9-5 win over Fairport.  The Panthers won their last Championship in 2015 with an 11-6 win over Penfield (HERE).  Pittsford took off and scored the first six goals before the Red Raiders got on the board.  The Panther defense held Fairport scoreless for 28 minutes. Pal-Mac Wins First Sectional Title

Pal-Mac won their first even Section Five Championship with a 16-11 win over Honeoye Falls-Lima.  The Red Raiders lead for nearly the entire game.  The Cougars took an early lead; however, Pal-Mac took over late in the first quarter and slowly increased their lead for the remaining three quarters.  At the largest difference, the Red Raiders led by eight.  In addition to the boys, Pal-Mac girls also won the Section Five Championship with a 16-5 win over Penn Yan (HERE). The All Tournament Teams for 2017 were announced at each final. MVPs for A and C were Colby Barker (Pittsford) and James Blazey (Pal-Mac). In the Class B, the award went to Andrew Russell (Victor) and in the class D it went to Connor Finger (Penn Yan). Full Story

Penn Yan Wins 22nd Title

Penn Yan won their twenty-second Section Five Title (seventh consecutive) with a 13-6 win over Waterloo.  The Mustangs scored the first four goals and held the Indians scoreless for the entire first quarter.  Waterloo scored four of the last five goals to pull the score closer than the game played.  A key component to the Mustang victory was midfielder Connor Fingar at the face-off draw.  Fingar won nearly all the face-offs and was named Class D All Tournament MVP. Victor won their fourth consecutive (and sixth overall) Section Five Title tonight with a 13-4 win over Canandaigua.  The Blue Devils have reached the finals five straight times, with their loss four years ago against Canandaigua in overtime 11-10 (HERE).  Tonight, the Blue Devils scored the first five goals and continued to hold at minimum a four goal lead the remainder of the game. Penn Yan started out the final day of sectional play with their 22nd Championship as they defeated Waterloo 13-6. It was the seventh in a row for the Mustangs as Austin Blumbergs scored 5g-2a and Connor Fingar added 3g-2a.
