Spencerport 17 - Brighton 16 in Overtime
April 30, 2016 - SPORTSFIVE REPORT: After a close half, Spencerport pulled away in the third and fourth quarters before Brighton forced overtime with the last five goals in regulation. The Rangers didn't give up and took the victory in sudden death with an unassisted goal from senior midfielder Alex Renz. Spencerport won 17-16.
The first half scoring was extremely close with both teams leading and neither leading by more than three. The Rangers held the lead early in the first quarter before Brighton scored three to go from down 3-2 to leading 5-3. Junior attackman Brett Randall scored two with freshman midfielder Owen Ronchetti scoring the third. The first quarter ended with the Barons leading 5-3. Spencerport scored the first goal of the second quarter when Renz assisted Charlie McMahon. Brighton added two more to take their largest lead of the game at 7-4. Both teams added one goal before Spencerport went on a scoring run. The Rangers scored six unanswered goals spanning the next six minutes (into the third quarter) to go from down by three to up by three (11-8).
Spencerport continued to increase their lead by adding two goals to a single goal for the Barons. Their largest lead was after Renz scored his second to last goal at 9:54 remaining in the fourth quarter. At that point, Spencerport led 16-11 and were in control of the pace of the game. Brighton slowly chipped away at their lead with goals from senior attackman Max Coke (2), Randall, sophomore midfielder Noah Shinaman and senior defenseman Parker Lawrence. Coke scored the game tying goal to force overtime with 1:26 remaining in regulation. Spencerport did not wait long into overtime to secure the win with Renz's goal was scored only 0:29 into the first overtime period.
Spencerport sophomore Owen VanWie had a strong day at the draw and finished 21/35. He also led the Rangers with 11 ground balls. In the cage for Spencerport, Connor MacKenzie recorded 17 saves at 52%.
