Penn Yan Wins in Class D

- After coming up short last season, Penn Yan returned to the Class D Finals this year looking for the win. With a 19-6 win over Bloomfield Honeoye, they succeeded in winning their 26th Sectional Title. Leading the Mustangs was senior Teagan Fingar who finished with 5g-5a and was named Class D All Tournament MVP. Junior Braden Fingar (3g) and Tukker Fisher (5g-1a) wereSpence at Pitts also named to the All Tournament Team. After defeating second seeded Midlakes in the Semi-Final round, Bloomfield-Honeoye made their first Finals appearance in tonight’s game. The Pride played a great match-up, particularly in the first quarter. Leading their charge was senior Tyler Bruder (3g-1a). Eighth grader Brennan Thomas (2g) and senior John Blair (3a) who joined Bruder in being named to the All Tournament team. In addition to his games tonight, Thomas also scored the game winning 12th goal in the 12-11 win over Midlakes. Defensively, Penn Yan’s Aven Foster and Bloomfield-Honeoye’s Michael Thomas were also named All Tournament Team members. Goalie Will Thompson finished with 10 saves for the Mustangs and rounded out the All Tournament Team players from the Class D Finals. Two players were also added from the Semi-Final match-ups with Griffin Hilimire (Mynderse) and Brendan Baldwin (Midlakes) receiving the honors.

The Pride scored the opening goal with 10:27 remaining on the clock. Freshman Brayden Arber scored the opener with a feed from behind the cage by Blair. The Mustangs responded with three back to back goals. T. Fingar scored the first with a drive straight at the goal from the top of the restraining line. Spence at Pitts This was followed by back to back inside feeds. The first from T. Fingar to Miles Ditzell and the second from Fisher to B. Fingar. Penn Yan led 3-1 with 8:28 left on the clock. Bloomfield’s second goal was a drive from behind the cage by Caleb Beadnell. The teams continued to alternate scoring until the end of the first quarter with Penn Yan leading 5-3.

In the second quarter, the Pride attempted to keep pace, but the Mustang offense was too much for them. Penn Yan added another five goals with Fisher and Mike Gigliotti scoring two each and T. Fingar scoring the fifth. Gig;iotti reached his 50th goal in the game. All five goals were unassisted goals with straight drives from either behind or from the restraining line. Bloomfield Honeoye’s goal was scored during extra-man offensive with Blair assisting Thomas. The Mustangs led 10-4 going into halftime.

In the third quarter, Bloomfield Honeoye scored the opener with Thomas’ second goal. Penn Yan responded with six unanswered goals, holding the Pride scoreless for nearly 15 minutes. Fisher and T. Fingar each added two goals with Colin Bacher and B. Fingar scoring single goals. With 7:59 left in the game, Bloomfield Honeoye scored their final goal. Bruder scored unassisted with another extra-man goal. The final three goals of the game were scored by Penn Yan. Penn Yan vs BH Freshman attackman Cole Murphy set up behind the cage and fed the ball into T. Fingar for his 9th assist of the season and second of the Tournament. Sophomore Miles Ditzell scored the last two goals with a cross-crease feed from Gigliotti and an unassisted goal from a fast-break.

Penn Yan moves into the Sub-regional match-up of the State Tournament where they will face Section VI Champion Akron on Wednesday at 7:30 pm at Canandaigua Academy. Akron played a single Section V team this year with an 11-4 loss against Aquinas in early May. The Mustangs have face Akron 6 times since 2003, with the most recent contest being in 2022 when they lost 12-11 in the State Tournament. .    [ Story and BOX SCORE
