2025 Preview: Thomas
February 28, 2025 -
Building on Last Years' Experience
The Thomas Boys Lacrosse team is gearing up for an exciting 2025 season, hoping to build on the lessons and experiences from last year. Head Coach Rob Ruller, entering his 23rd season with a scholastic record of 253-132, aims to guide his team to new heights.
2024 Season Recap
Last season, Thomas finished with a disappointing 7-11 record, reflecting a mix of victories and challenges. The team saw a total of 150 goals and 80 assists, with an average of 8.3 goals per game. Despite the team's efforts, they faced nine close games within a five-goal margin, highlighting the competitive nature of their schedule. Losing their top scorer midway through the season and having two 8th graders starting meant the offense had a lot of learning to do.
Graduating Talent
This year's team faces the challenge of replacing the talent of fourteen graduated seniors, including players like Jagger Altieri, Dom Blechot, and Craig McEneany, who received All-League honors. Altieri's 12 goals and 19 assists, Blechot's contributions as a midfielder and defender, and McEneany's defensive prowess will be missed.
Promising Returners
However, the future looks promising with the return of key players such as Jonah Jobson, Brett Mersdorf, and Jake Polizzi, all of whom earned All-League Honorable Mention honors last year. Jobson, with 20 goals and 10 assists, along with Mersdorf and Polizzi, who have committed to playing at St. Bonaventure, bring a wealth of experience and skill to the field.
Team Dynamics
With 15 expected rising seniors, 4 juniors, and 2 sophomores, the team has a solid foundation to build upon. The returning players will be crucial in filling the gaps left by the departed seniors and leading the team to success.
Key Matches and Goals
Last year's season included notable wins against teams like Wayne, Penn Yan and Hamburg, and Schroeder, but also tough losses to strong opponents such as Irondequoit and Baldwinsville and HFL. The team aims to capitalize on their close games and turn narrow defeats into victories this season.
Looking Ahead
Coach Ruller brings his extensive experience and passion for the game to the forefront as he leads Thomas into the new season. With a mix of seasoned players and emerging talent, the Thomas Boys Lacrosse team is poised for an exciting and competitive 2025 season.
