Fairport Boys Lacrosse Ready For 2025
With the 2025 lacrosse season fast approaching, the Fairport Boys Lacrosse team is gearing up for another exciting campaign. Coming off a respectable 10-8 record last year, the team is poised to build on its strengths while addressing the challenges that lie ahead.
Losses and Returns
After winning a Section V Class A Championship in 2022, the Raiders were left with a very young team and had to rebuild. They experienced their first losing season in at least twenty years but rebounded last year with a 10-8 record. The team faces a significant challenge this season, having lost 13 seniors from last year's squad. Key graduates include standout players like Jack DuBose(M), Zackary McNally(LSM), and Michael Priddy(A), all of whom earned All-League honors. However, the team isn't without its strengths, as it returns 16 rising seniors, including award-winning players Mitchell Monte (A/M Dartmouth), Corey Roeser(M), Luke Ryan (G USMA, 166svs=59%), and defensemen Cameron Shear (Oswego), and Ryan Torrelli (Brockport).
Statistical Overview
Last season, Fairport scored a total of 134 goals and provided 67 assists. Of these, the returning players contributed 70 goals (52%) and 38 assists (57%). The team had a mix of results in close games, winning 2 and losing 2 by just one goal. They also had 11 games that were decided by 5 goals or less, showcasing their ability to compete in tight contests. The team's defense will aim to improve on the 124 goals they allowed last season, with an average of 6.9 goals against per game.
Key Games and Performance
Fairport had a rollercoaster season last year with notable victories over Orchard Park, Greece Storm, and Aquinas. However, they faced tough losses against strong opponents like Canandaigua, West Genesee, and McQuaid Jesuit. The team's ability to win close games, evidenced by their 5-4 win over an improved Greece Storm and 11-8 win over Aquinas, will be crucial for their success this season.
Returning Stars and New Hopefuls
The returning players bring a wealth of experience and talent to the table. Mitchell Monte, who scored 36 goals and provided 25 assists last year, will be a key offensive threat. Luke Ryan, the team's reliable goalie with 166 saves and a save percentage of 58.9%, will anchor the defense. Corey Roeser, a dominant face-off midfielder, and defenders Cameron Shear and Ryan Torrelli, both All-League second team honorees, will play pivotal roles.
A total of 7 players have made coimmitments to continue playing in college. Seniors continuing their game after graduation include Rob Protz (M - Fisher) and Makhi Farrier (M - Mount Union), and Andrew Crowley (Oswego).
Coach Torrelli
Coach Mike Torrelli, entering his 22nd season with a win/loss record of 263-111, will lead the charge as Fairport aims to make its mark in Class A. He is looking forward to the new season, "This year's team has a lot of Leadership from our 16 seniors. The strength of this year's team is their work ethic and they believe in each other."
"They are one of the hardest working groups we have had in a few years. This group understands the importance of TEAM. They understand for us to get back to the Sec. 5 finals it will take all of us. They know that success is never done by one player. It's done by the whole team."
Season Outlook
With a balanced mix of seasoned veterans and promising young talent, the Fairport Boys Lacrosse team is set for an exciting 2025 season. The team's ability to perform in close games, combined with the leadership of their award-winning returning players, will be key factors in their quest for success. As always, the support of the Fairport community will be a driving force for the team as they aim to make this season one to remember.
