Victor Wins First Title Since 2019
May 31, 2023 - SPORTSFIVE REPORT: Victor won their first Championship title since 2019 with a 16-6 win over Spencerport. This was the first time in program history that Spencerport made the finals and the first time since Victor’s six year winning Streak (2014-2019) that the Blue Devils had made the finals. In addition to Victor Boys winning their title, the Victor Girls Lacrosse Team also won their Championship earlier in the evening with an 8-7 in quadruple overtime win over Irondequoit.
Both teams played well in the first half and the score stayed close until the third quarter when Victor took over the game. Leading the charge for the Blue Devils was senior midfielder Thomas Gravino. He finished with 7g and was named the Class B All Tournament MVP. Additional big scorers for the Blue Devils were Jack Herendeen (3g-1a) and Sam Gotham (2g-3a); both of whom were named to the All-Tournament Team. Pax Marshall (1g-2a) and Aiden Clinksclaes (1g-2a) also added high numbers. For Spencerport, Jayden Roderiguez led in scoring with 2g-2a. Cameron Mesh added another 1g-1a and both were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The entire first half was back and forth with the score never being more than 1 goal apart with ties coming at the first four scores. After both teams had shots at the cage, Spencerport was the first to get on the board. With 4:57 remaining in the opening quarter, Rodriguez drove hard from behind the cage. After drawing a defenseman he fed the ball into the crease and Jayden Mandarano scored. Less than a minute later, Victor tied the game for the first time with Gotham assisting Gravino. With the only back to back goal by a team in the first half, Victor scored again with Gotham scoring his first goal with an assist from Herendeen. The final goal of the quarter came with 2:13 remaining. Rodriguez scored his first goal with a multi-attempt drive at the cage from the left side. The score was tied 2-2 after the first quarter.
The back and forth play continued throughout the second quarter. Victor pulled head again with an inside feed from Aiden Clinkscales to Herendeen. The Rangers tied up the game a few minutes later with a pass to the crease from Rodriguez to Cameron Mesh. Victor once again pulled up by one with a face-off fast-break. Gravino picked up the loose ball on the face and took it all the way to the cage. Victor led 4-3 with 8:24 left in the half. Spencerport tied the game for the fourth time with Mesh feeding Rodriguez on the crease. The final goal of the first half was scored by the Blue Devils with Pax Marshall scoring from the left flat off a feed from behind by Kyle Seager. Victor led 5-4 going into the break.
In the third quarter, Victor’s offense picked up and the Blue Devils pulled ahead. Victor scored the next 11 goals (six in the third quarter, five in the fourth quarter). The Blue Devil offense was led by Gravino where he demonstrated why he was named Tournament MVP. He scored four of his seven goals during this period (three of which were unassisted). The Blue Devils kept up the pressure throughout the quarter and led 11-4 going into the final quarter.
In the fourth, they kept up the offensive pressure adding 5 goals and continuing to hold the Ranger scoreless. Senior midfielder Braeden McConville scored with a feed from Gotham with 10:39 remaining on the clock. Less than a minute later, Gravino scored his seventh of the game with a feed from Clinksclaes. The Blue Devils added another 3 more to finish out the game. The final goal was scored by senior midfielder Liam Wheeler. The Rangers broke their scoreless streak with 1:15 remaining on the clock with Lucas Heinsler scoring off a feed from Mandarano. The final goal of the game came with 0:15 remaining and Dylan Lewis scoring unassisted. In the cage for Spencerport, Taylor Kaye finished with 9 saves. For Victor, Brady Robinson played the majority of the game and recorded 6 saves. Senior Ryan Seager finished out the last minute of play; however, did not record a save.
Rounding out the All Tournament Team were Aiden Greco (Irondequoit), Trevor Lewis (Spencerport), Drew Pagano (Schroeder), Conor Morgan (Spencerport) and Dom Pezzimenti (Victor). Victor will move on to face the Section Six Champion on Saturday at 12:30.
