Geneva Wins 2nd Straight Title
May 28, 2019 - Geneva won their second back to back Class C Championship tonight against Wayne, 10-1. The Panthers defeated the Eagles 13-2 last year. Geneva was slowly plodding throughout the contest and added a few goals in each quarter. Midfielder Sam Miller was named the Class C All Tournament MVP after a 3g-3a day (60% of all goals). Additionally, goalie Brandon Wayne finished with an exceptional day, recording 13 saves. Of those, 10 came in the first half while holding the Eagles scoreless during that period. Both seniors were instrumental in the success of the Panthers this season.
Miller started off the game with an assist to Mike Petronio down from the top center. The Panthers led 1-0 after 12 minutes. In the second quarter, Geneva added another four goals. The first two goals were scored by Curtis Denison. The first was scored on a loose ball at the cage after a save by Wayne goalie Jack Acker. Acker finished with 6 saves on the game. The second was on a crease pass from Miller. Geneva’s third goal was scored by Nick Askin with an outside shot and the fourth was scored by Noah Eighmey. Eighmey was named to the All Tournament Team. The Panthers led 5-0 at the half.
In the third quarter, Geneva added three goals and Wayne scored their lone goal. Miller scored two with Aiden Eighmey scoring the third. Wayne’s goal was scored with 11:20 remaining in the third quarter on a fast-break goal from John Reagan to Kyle Russell. Reagan was one of four players named to the All Tournament team for Wayne. Long Stick midfielder Joe Camp, attackman Billy Thomson and midfielder Ryan Cahill rounded out the picks for the Eagles. In the fourth quarter, Geneva added two more goals. The first was scored by Miller and the second was scored by A. Eighmey.
From the Semi-Finals matchups, HF-L attackman Josh Barski was added to the All Tournament List. Geneva will move on to play the Section Six Champion on Saturday. The Title game in Section Six will be played tomorrow.
