Ten and a Half New Head Coaches in 2012

The new varsity season starts next week and for the second year in a row, there has been a large turnover of Head Coaches in Section Five. Ten brand new coaches have joined Hilton's Dave Moore who took over in the middle of the Cadet's campaign last year. In the last two years eighteen new Head Coaches have been appointed in the field of thirty-seven teams that make up lacrosse in the Section.John McGurk

Wayne Central joins the Section this year with their first varsity level team. Jeff Ugine has been developing the players who played junior varsity last year. An Irondequoit alum and Cornell University graduate, Jeff coached at Penfield and started the program three years ago. Working with the modified and then junior varsity team, he has been moving up with the players. He must know them very well at this point. The Eagles will be playing in the Finger Lakes League this spring.

Joe Hussar is returning to the program that he started at Batavia. After taking time to work with the Modified and Youth programs, Joe takes over for Jeremy Mettler who is working with the Junior Varsity. Chuck Hammon, who also had a stint with the big boys, has returned to lead the Modified program after a couple of years working in the Youth program. The Blue Devils are playing an independent schedule in 2012.

After nine seasons as Matt Petz's assistant, John McGurk takes over the reins at Webster Schroeder. John helped win two Section Five titles as a player at Fairport High School and then played for Coach Jeff Long at Ithaca College, while earning his degree in Physical Education and Health. Ben Clement is proud of his six years of coaching at Midlakes. His first two years were spent as the Head Modified Coach after which he took on the Head Coaching spot for the Junior Varsity squad. For the past two years he has served as an assistant to Matt Fitch and he is looking forward to leading the Screaming Eagles in 2012.

Brockport's new Head Coach is Joe Sidari. A graduate of Medina High School, Joe played football, wrestled and played lacrosse. He studied business management at St. John Fisher College and earned a Masters degree in marketing education from Nazareth.

When Bloomfield and Honeoye joined to form a team, Chris Stock, a math teacher since 2006 started working in the program. An assistant for former Head Coach Jack Beaney, Chris takes over "The Pride" this season. Chris played lacrosse at Penfield High School and then at Geneseo.Dan James

Just before the start of the season, long-time Section Five lacrosse coach, Mark Sweeney stepped down at Gates Chili and was replaced by two former players. Jake Johnson becomes the Head Coach and Andy Hilton has been named the Assistant Coach. Johnson, a AGR supper 22 and third team All State football player at Gates Chili, earned a number of All County awards in lacrosse as a defenseman. He studied physical education at Cortland where he played club lacrosse.

Dan James, McQuaid Jesuit's new Head Coach has been working with the McQuaid Jesuit program since 2007 as an Assistant to Paul Jordan. Prior to joining the Knights, Dan coached at DeSmet Jesuit HS in St. Louis, MO and also at Missouri Baptist University. A first team All-American and USILA Academic All American at Mercyhurst College, Dan won the F. Morris Touchstone Award as Position Player of the Year.

Rounding out the new appointments are Ray Gangarossa, taking over for Corey Perry with the Greece Thunder and Chris Clemenson, who has been appointed to replace Joe Caraher who stepped down at Mynderse Academy.
