Monday: The Tournaments Begin with Out bracket Games

The 2011 Section Five Tournaments are now underway with twelve out bracket games played today. There were two upsets in the seeding as, in Class A, #9 Greece Thunder beat #8 Greece Lightning 11-9. In Class C, #9 Mynderse won a 15-13 victory over #8 Marcus Whitman. The rest of the games followed seeding and although many had one-sided scores, Livonia (#6) just edged out Waterloo 7-6. The other winners were Spencerport, Victor, Hilton, Penn Yan, Aquinas, Pal-Mac, Haverling, ER, and Geneva. The next round is the quarter finals for all three classes on Wednesday.

  --   The Greece Thunder won their first round of sectionals by defeating the Greece Lightning 11-9. The Lightning came to play, scoring five of their nine goals in the first quarter. They scored first at 9:37 but the Thunder answered with their first goal a minute later at 8:30 when Gino Prestigiacomo sent the ball to Anthony Merola. The Thunder added their last goal in the quarter at 7:49 when Prestigiacomo beat his defended and ran straight to the goal. The Lightning scored the next four goals to end the quarter up 5-2.

During the second quarter the Thunder started to play stronger defense and slowed down the Lightning offense, limiting them to one goal while added three of their own. The Thunder moved the ball well and had three different players scoring each with assists. Senior Nick Caracci had his best game of the season, playing excellent short-stick defense and also scoring two key goals in the second and fourth quarters.

At the beginning of the third quarter Scotty Tam won a face off for the Thunder and drove the ball in fast break passing to Merola who fed Nick Kraft cross-cage for a quick goal at 11:36. This tied the game and the Thunder outscored the Lightning again 3-1. Parker Bonis and Keenan Mahoney played shut-down defense on the Lightning two top players.

Leading the scoring for the Lightning were Prestigiacomo (2g-3a), Merola (2g-2a), and Eric Hostetter and Nick Caracci who had 2g each.

The Thunder now moved to the quarter final round on Wednesday when they travel to St. John Fisher College for a 5:30 game with top seeded Pittsford. No report from Arc/Oly (Lightning).  

 

  --  Fourth seeded Aquinas defeated thirteenth seeded Bloomfield-Honeoye 20-2. The Little Irish had 11 players make the scorebook. Included were two players that were just added to the roster for sectional play. Freshman Jonathan Olbrich scored his first Varsity goal along with goalie Alex Ulhein who played seven minutes between the pipes, but did not face a shot on cage.

Leading in scoring for Aquinas was senior Klay Heston (5g-1a) and sophomores Nick Weston (3g-2a) and Billy Lombardi (2g-2a). In the cage, along with Ulhein, Erich Wischmeyer and Tom Mscichowski split time. Wischmeyer played the first half and recorded one save. Mscichowski played time in the second and third quarters and recorded two saves. Aquinas hosts Pal-Mac in Wednesday's quarter finals.  

 

  --  Eighth seeded Spencerport defeated ninth seeded Brockport 15-2. The Rangers scored the first goal of the game and never trailed. They scored 11 of the first 12 spanning the opening half. In the second half, they added three more and held Brockport scoreless for both the third and fourth quarters. The game was marred with two different players being ejected and the Blue Devils had 12 penalties including six minutes of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

Spencerport was led in scoring by Ben Tribunella (6g) and Seth Miller (1g-5a). Marcus Palvino (3g-2a) and Matt Kaser (1g-2a) also put up big numbers. Levi Basynnski and Miller led in ground balls for the Rangers with 10 each. In the cage, Tyler Schweikert finished at 50% with two saves. Scoring for Brockport were Geoff Catlin (2g) and Nick Sutphen (1a). In the cage, Hunter DeLany finished with 12 saves. The Rangers move on to the quarter finals where they will travel to Irondequoit where they will play the top seeded Eagles on Wednesday. No report from Brockport.

  --  Sixth seed Victor defeated eleventh seeded HF-L 11-4. The game was close for the first half, before Victor scored seven unanswered goals spanning the final minute of the second quarter and into the third quarter.

In the first quarter, HF-L struck first. Drew Tallon scored the first of his two goals unassisted for the Cougars. Victor came back and scored two more before the end of the quarter with Connor Kimball and Pat D'Angelo both scoring unassisted. Victor led 2-1 after the first quarter. Victor scored the first goal of the second quarter as well with Kyle Benwitz scoring (assisted by Mitch Rupp). HF-L scored the next two goals to tie the game with 1:36 remaining in the quarter. Peter Pluta and Mitchell Kinney scored for the Cougars. Victor didn't keep the game tied for long, scoring two goals in the final 90 seconds of the first half. John Maloney scored both goals for Victor with Kimball assisting the first and D'Angelo assisting the second. Victor led 5-3 at halftime.

In the second half, Victor opened up their scoring adding six and holding HF-L to only one.

In the cage for Victor, Steve Basile finished with eight saves. For H-FL, Nick Beniamino played nearly the entire game and recorded six saves. Stephen Leonard played one minute, but did not face a shot on cage.

Next up for Victor is a quarter final game at Brighton where they will take on the third seeded Barons.

  --  Seventh seeded Hilton defeated tenth seeded Eastridge 18-5. The Cadets scored the first nine goals of the contest spanning into the second quarter and led 13-2 at halftime. Hilton's Kyle Youngman dominated the face-off draw, winning 11/13 (85%). Jake Montgomery led in scoring with 3g-2a. David Smith (4g), Youngman (2g-2a) and Derek Richards (2g-2a) also contributed to the Hilton win. In the cage, Mark Detroia finished at 50% with five saves.

For Eastridge, Ethan Printy (2g-1a) led the scoring. Danny Ott (2g), Mike Mortillaro (1g) and Anthony Coffaro (1a) rounded out the scoring for the Lancers. In the cage, TJ Ennis finished with 13 saves in three quarters and Odin Abril finished with three saves in the final quarter.

Hilton now moves on the quarter final round were they will play second seeded Churchville-Chili.

  --  Top seeded Penn Yan defeated sixteenth seeded Batavia 18-0. Although Batavia ended their season with a 0-17 record, the Blue Devils were nothing but respectful at Penn Yan and the game of lacrosse. The Blue Devils fought hard in their game but Penn Yan had 12 different players score. Leading in scoring was junior Dylan Yonts (3g-5a), sophomore Ryan Maciejewski (3g-2a) and freshman Rion Davison (3g). In the cage, Brandon Maciejewski and Matt Spoor split time. Both goalies recorded two saves.

Penn Yan hosts Mynderse on Wednesday. The Blue Devils were one of two teams that beat a team seeded right above them. No report from Batavia.  

 

  --  In one of the closest games of the night, sixth seeded Livonia defeated eleventh seeded Waterloo 7-6. The game was back and forth, with neither team holding more than a two goal lead. The game was tied three times in the first half before Livonia took the one goal lead into halftime.

Waterloo scored the first goal of the contest only 0:43 into the game. Tim Wright scored (unassisted) for the Indians. Two minutes later, Derek Bishopp scored his lone goal of the game with an assist from Josh Wester to tie the score. Bishopp's goal was scored during man-up. Livonia kept up the pressure and scored the next two goals. Wester and Bishopp traded places for the second goal with Wester scoring on a feed from Bishopp. The third goal was scored by Alex Chiara with an assist from Jake Fox. Livonia's two goal lead with 6:34 remaining in the first quarter was the largest lead of the game. Before the end of the quarter, Waterloo scored with John Butlak scoring unassisted. Livonia led 3-2 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, each team added two goals. Waterloo's Cody Riegel scored first (unassisted) to tie the game for the second time. Cody Cisco scored the first of his two goals to give the Bulldogs the lead again. Fox registered his second assist of the game with a feed to Cisco. With 3:21 remaining, Zarrien Sloan scored (unassisted) for Waterloo to tie the game for the final time. Livonia scored the next two goals, one in the second and one in the third. These back to back goals helped Livonia secure the win. Chiara scored both goals for Livonia with Bishopp assisting the first and Cisco assisting the second. Livonia led 5-4 after at halftime. Chiara's goal was the only goal of the third quarter.

Waterloo scored the first goal of the fourth quarter to bring the game within one goal. Elliot Messmer scored both fourth quarter goals for the Indians. His first goal was assisted by Riegel during man-up. Cisco scored with 6:41 remaining to give the Bulldogs back the two goal lead. Messmer's second goal was at 2:38 and once again brought Waterloo within a goal. Messmer's goal was the last shot for Waterloo. Livonia won the final face-off and although the Indians had one more shot with the ball on defense, they could not clear the ball up.

In the cage for Waterloo, Josh Bailey finished with 14 saves for the Indians. Tim Wright and Bailey each finished with a team leading four ground balls. For Livonia, Ethan Jamison played the entire game between the pipes and recorded nine saves. Nick Jonasse led his team in ground balls with seven. Jake Keller (6), Bishopp (4) and Jamison (4) also contributed.

The win sends Livonia on to the quarter finals where they travel to Geneva to take on the third seeded Panthers on Wednesday.

  --  In one of two games were the lower seed was victorious, ninth seeded Mynderse defeated eight seeded Marcus Whitman 15-13. This was the third time in less than one week that the two teams faced. On 5/16, Marcus Whitman won 18-7 and on 5/17 Marcus Whitman won 10-9.

Leading in scoring for Marcus Whitman was freshman Matt Hall (6g-1a). Juniors Matt Hey (3g), Jeffrey Bero (2g-1a) and Clay Wilson (3a) along with sophomore Karl Gray (2g-1a) rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats. In the cage, Merritt Bailey finished with 14 saves.

For Mynderse, senior Mike Clark finished with 5g-1a. Junior Leroy Halftown (3g-2a) along with seniors Brett Wood (3g-1a) and Danny Galusha (1g-3a) also scored for the Blue Devils. In the cage, Tim Trickler finished with 17 saves. Trickler was a key part of the victory, with a number of impressive saves late in the game to keep Mynderse in the lead. The Indians will move on to play top seeded Penn Yan on Wednesday.  

 

  --  Fifth seeded Palmyra-Macedon defeated twelfth seeded Newark 17-3 tonight. Pal-Mac had ten different players score. Leading in scoring was senior Mike DeMar (6g-1a). Freshman Ben Reeves finished with 3g-2a and senior Mike Russell finished with 2g-2a. In the cage, Matt Carkner played nearly the whole game and recorded six saves. Mike Allen played the final five minutes, but did not face a shot on cage. Next up for the Red Raiders is a trip to Aquinas on Wednesday. No report from Newark.  

 

  --  Second seeded Haverling defeated fifteenth seeded Gananda 18-5. The Rams had scoring from nine different players. Leading the charge was Zach Reed (4g-5a). Nick Rossi (4g-3a), Brian Gable (3g) and Jeff Chapman (1g-2a) added to the scoring count for Haverling. Defenseman Trevor Lang led the Rams in ground balls with nine. Reed (7), Chapman (6), Matt Schlink (4), Gable (4) and Zach Watson (4) also added to the ground ball tally. In the cage, Andrew Clark finished with six saves (55%) for Haverling.

For Gananda, Trevor Schraffenberger led in scoring with 1g-2a. Zach Rink (2g), Mark Power (1g), Colin Brillian (1g) and Kyler Friesner (1a) rounded out the scoring for Gananda. In the cage, Steven Fisher finished with 10 saves.

Haverling now moves on the quarter final round and host East Rochester on Wednesday.

  --  Seventh seeded East Rochester defeated tenth seeded Bishop Kearney 13-7. The Bombers had five different players score. Leading in scoring was senior John Reiss (5g-2a). Sophomore Raymond Shalvoy (2g-2a) and junior Jake Altman (3g) also scored for the East Rochester. In the cage, Liridon Dervisholli finished with ten saves. Jake Altman played the last three minutes for the Bombers and recorded two saves.

East Rochester will take the long trip to Haverling for the quarter final game on Wednesday. No report from Bishop Kearney.  

 

  

  --  Third seeded Geneva defeated fourteenth seeded Midlakes 20-4. Geneva had scoring from eight different players included two freshman. Senior Billy Eddington finished with a tam leading 5g-3a. Sophomore Sean Cunningham (4g-3a) and senior Will Brennan (4g-1a) also added the scoring. Freshmen Fran Shaw and Eddie Eddington both added one goal. In the cage for the Panthers, Derek Grillone played three quarters and recorded two saves. Tom Lynch played the final quarter and recorded one save. The Panthers host Livonia in the quarter finals on Wednesday.

For Midlakes, Cory Gray (2g-1a) led in scoring. Lucas Maslyn (1g), Sean Peck (1g) and Brandon Sauve (1a) rounded out the scoring for the Screaming Eagles. In the cage, Matt Brennessel finished with ten saves.
