Saturday: Seven Winners
May 2, 2009 - It was Penfield over Gates Chili (12-6), Irondequoit over Aquinas (10-8) and Thomas over McQuaid Jesuit (14-4). Other winners were Penn Yan, Mynderse over Waterloo in OT, Pal-Mac and Spencerport.
Penn Yan 20 - Bloomfield-Honeoye 5
-- The Penn Yan Mustangs improved their record to 9-1 with a 20-5 victory over Honeoye-Bloomfield. Ty Trombley (16/19) and Danny Guererri (5/7) combined for 21 face off wins and John Linnan scooped up 6 GBs for Penn Yan. Leading by a score of 12-1 at the end of the first quarter, the Mustangs, once again, were able to give the majority of playing time to underclassmen as the game was played in running time in the 2nd half. Freshman Cody Richardson saw the majority of time between the pipes recording 4s/4ga in 30 minutes of action. Senior Ethan Kamholtz played the first 18 minutes with 3s/1ga.
Twelve players made the scorebook for Penn Yan: Preston Maciejewski (4g-2a), John Linnan (5g), Brendan Minor (1g), Andy Button (1g), Adam Trombley (1g-4a), Matt Osgood (2g-1a), Adam Stork (1g-2a), Ty Trombley (1a), Cole Castle (1g-2a), Anthony Luppino (3g), Nate Nichols (1a), and Baird Wilber (1g).
Scoring for Bloomfield-Honeoye were Zach Hammond (1g), Sean Beaney (3g) and Zach Blain (1g-2a). Freshman goalie Aaron Stevens made 5s/20ga for the Bombdogs.
-- With records of 6-3 and 11-1 the match up between Irondequoit and Aquinas was expected to be a good one. At game, time it looked like the Little Irish might be in trouble when Brendan Hall was warming up in the nets instead of Kraig Heston, who was unavailable for the game. Hall, however, with only one lapse, did a fine job, recording ten saves by the end of the day.
The Little Irish scored the first goal, at 10:51, when Austin Gorman (3g-2a) scored his first goal of the game with and assist from Anthony Bianchi on a short drive from the side of the goal. The Eagles, however, scored the next five unanswered goals to close the quarter with Irondequoit up 5-1.
Junior middie Mike Utz was first up, on the receiving end of an inside feed from sophomore middie Greg Coholan, to tie the game at 1-1. One minute later Jordan Napierala beat one man and got by a second who slid too early on his drive from the right. Less than a minute later, Greg Coholan scored an unassisted goal from up top. Then sophomore attackman Emmy Poccia found Drew Coholan who was alone and standing just off the left crease. All four goals were scored in less than two minutes.
Poccia ended the first quarter scoring with an unassisted goal as he ran a close cut from behind the goal and underhanded the ball into the goal. The Eagles were ahead 5-1.
Aquinas settled down during the time between quarters and came back hard, scoring three unanswered goals at the top of the quarter. Bianchi scored on a shot from up top at 11:11 and then assisted on the second goal, scored by Gorman, at 9:57. Sophomore attackman Klay Heston scored on a textbook inside fast break from a clear and with an assist from Gorman. The goals took the sting out of the offensive play by the Eagles, but they recovered by scoring two more goals before the half. Greg Coholan drove to the right and sent a fierce some side arm shot past Hall at 5:55 to take the score to 6-4. Senior attackman David Shields scored on a pass from Erik Kleehammer to give Irondequoit a 7-4 lead at the half time break.
Aquinas made it a two goal game early in the third with an unassisted goal by Gorman, who backed his way to the crease before scoring. Irondequoit scored their only goal of the quarter when Drew Coholan drove from the top of the restraining box for his unassisted goal at 6:10. The quarter ended with the Eagles ahead 8-5.
Although the scoring in the fourth quarter was 3-2 for Aquinas, it felt like the game was close and might go either way. Irondequoit scored first, giving them a 9-6 lead. Greg Coholan had another drive from the top and forced his way to a one-on-one with the goalie. Aquinas came back at 7:28 with an unassisted goal by Heston, driving from behind the cage and dodging two defenders before scoring with a bounce
shot. He scored again three minutes later when the Little Irish broke an Irondequoit clear and he found himself at the end of an inside fast break.
Irondequoit stopped the Little Irish momentum with a goal by Poccia during a clear. Head Coach Craig Whipple called a time out at 2:58 to settle down the Eagles and remind them that they had a three goal lead. He stressed the need to control the ball. The time out was successful, although Aquinas scored the last goal of the game with 0:26 left when Will Schnoeneck, sitting on the crease, received the ball from Gorman.
Scoring for Irondequoit were Mike Utz (1g), Greg Coholan (3g-1a), Jordan Napierala (1g), Drew Coholan (2g), David Shields (1g), Erik Kleehammer (1a) and Emmy Poccia (2g-1a). Tyler Nash had 12s/8ga for the Eagles (7-3).
Scoring for Aquinas were Austin Gorman (3g-2a), Klay Heston (3g), Will
Schnoeneck (1g), Anthony Bianchi (1g-2a) and Anthony Starnino (1a). Brendan Hall had 10s/10ga for Aquinas (11-2).
-- After trailing for most of the game, Mynderse scored two goals in the last 1:42 to force the game into overtime, where The Blue Devils beat Waterloo 14-13.
Waterloo led at the end of the first quarter 4-3 and at the half 8-6. Mynderse made up the difference in the third. In the fourth quarter, Waterloo again went ahead with less than two minutes left in the game, junior attackman Nick Giovannini scored with an assist from Brett Wood to take Mynderse to within one goal. Giovannini scored the tying goal (assisted by Matt Koopman) with 0:56 left in the game. Sophomore midfielder Brett Wood scored the game winner (assisted by Giovannini) at the 2:48 mark of overtime.
Scoring for Mynderse were Matt Koopman (4g-1a), Tim Trickler (1a), A.J. Bachman (1g-1a), Charlie Barbay (3g-2a), Steve Lucchesi (1g), Mike Warrick (1g-2a), Nick Giovannini (3g-1a) and Brett Wood (1g-1a). Tim Trickler had 21s/13ga for the Blue Devils.
Scoring for Waterloo were Rob Goodenow (3g), Pete Vacca (3g-1a), Jeff Wadhams (2g), Chance Lowry (3g) and Dylan Chilson (2g-1a). Zach Ramirez had 6s/14ga Waterloo.
-- Webster Thomas started off slowly but scored eight goals in the second quarter on the way to a 14-4 win over visiting McQuaid Jesuit. The teams tied at the end of the first quarter but that one goal was the last for the Knights until the last quarter. A high note for McQuaid Jesuit came from sophomore midfielder Clark Hadley who won 13 of 19 face offs for the Knights. The Titans saw scoring from seven players and used three goalies for their win.
Scoring for Thomas were Jack Hinderland (2g-1a), Nick Scalzo (4g-1a), William Gurowski (2g-1a), Pat Morrill (1g-2a), Kenny Tomeno (2g-1a), JT Hauck (2g-1a) and Kyle Rothfuss (1g). James O`Neil had 5s/1ga (24 mins), Austin Fox had 2s/2ga (19 mins) and Dan Solimano added 1s/1ga (5 mins) for the Titans (9-1)
Scoring for McQuaid Jesuit were Nick Wolak (3g), Eric Wright (1g-1a), James Sturnick (1a) and Jack Pomeroy (1a). Ethan Matteson recorded 12s/11ga (34 mins) and Pat Sheridan had 7s/3ga (14 mins) for the Knights.
-- Penfield, after ending the first quarter tied 0-0, come out strong in the second quarter with six goals and in the end, defeated Gates-Chili 12-6.
As it was Senior Day in Penfield, with the exception of man-up, man-down and one notable exception, the Patriots started and played all seniors for the entire game. Tyler Zweifel came out of the game for a period of time due to dizzy spells and junior Tucker Nelson took his position. Having only played man-up in the Churchville-Chili contest, the game marked the full return of Kyle Van Thof to the Patriot line-up. Van Thof had been out for seven games due to injury.
The Spartans were the first to score with Tyler Webb scoring unassisted one minute into the second quarter. Penfield responded with two goals of their own when James Dwyer assisted Kyle Van Thof and Tucker Nelson assisted Mike Malloy. Van Thof led the Patriots with 4g-3a from 9 shots. Van Thof also led the Patriots with 6 ground balls and was 6/8 at the face off. Defenseman Adam Wacenske scored (unassisted) for Gates-Chili to tie the score at 2-2. The Patriots, however, scored the next five goals before the Spartans found the back of the cage again.
Van Thof and Dwyer each scored two goals for the Patriots with Dan Villa scoring the fifth. Gian Maggio, Nelson and Van Thof each had one assist in the set. At the end of the second quarter the Patriots led 6-2.
After the opening goal, Dwyer scored (unassisted), to finish up their six unanswered goals. Grant Ferguson scored for the Spartans with Wacenske assisting. The teams alternated goals for the remainder of the third quarter. Mike Vacanti, assisted by Nelson, scored the next goal for the Patriots. Less than one minute later the Spartans' Webb scored again, this time assisted by Cam Gormel. The final goal of the quarter was scored when Van Thof passed the ball to Malloy for the goal at 3:09. The score was 9-4 at the end of three quarters.
In the fourth quarter the Patriots outscored the Spartans 3-2. Webb scored both goals for Gates-Chili; his first at 9:59 was unassisted and his second at 3:37 was assisted by Ferguson. Van Thof assisted the first of the Penfield goals (scored by Dwyer) and then scored the second goal (unassisted). The final goal of the game was the only goal scored in man-up, with Penfield's Kevin Westcott scoring, with an assist from Nelson.
Penfield was 1/1 in extra-man opportunities. At the face-off along with Van Thof were Mike Vacanti who was 8/12 for Penfield. Joining Van Thof in ground balls were Shane Cleveland (4), Nelson (3), Vacanti (4) and goalie Brady Del Pozzo (4). Del Pozzo finished the game with 6 saves (50%) for Penfield.
Gates-Chili goalie Jason Baetzhold finished with 9 saves. Baetzhold (2), Wacenske (2), Zack Smith (2), Pete DiLaura (2) and Brian Eckam (2) all had ground balls for the Spartans.
Scoring for Penfield were Van Thof (4g-3a), Nelson (4a), Dwyer (3g-2a), Malloy (2g), Vacanti (1g), Villa (1g), Westcott (1g) and Maggio (1a).
Scoring for Gates-Chili were Webb (4g), Ferguson (1g-1a), Wacenske (1g-1a) and Gormel (1a).

Spencerport 13 - Greece Thunder 7
-- After a 6-5 half Spencerport finished with a 13-7 win over Greece Thunder (Ath/Ody) in an Monroe County D-3 game.
Scoring for the Thunder were Phil Bond (2g-1a), Nate Wallenhorst (2g-5a), Gino Prestigiacomo (2g) and Eric Bodine (1g). Steve Cole recorded 14s/13ga including 8 saves in the second quarter.
