March, 2009 - Batavia ended their league season fifth in Monroe County Division III with a 2-8 record (2-14 overall). Seeded ninth in the Class C tournament the Blue Devils defeated 8th seeded Pal-Mac in the first round but lost to Penn Yan in the quarter finals and finished in eighth place. Batavia was the only team to defeat a higher seed in the Class C Tournament, and only one of four teams in the entire tournament.
Batavia lost ten seniors from last year's roster. A big loss for the Blue Devils will be goalie Matt Landfried (Washington and Jefferson College). Landfried led Section Five last season in saves. Another big loss will be Ian Chapman. Chapman is currently playing Junior A hockey and has signed up as an Assistant Coach for the Blue Devils.
Offensively, Batavia will look to leading scorer Joe Muoio (25g-28a). Muoio will lead the attack and will be joined by Will Mulcahy (21g-7a). Mulcahy will look to replace Ian Chapman in the attack. In the midfield, the Blue Devils will look to Chip Chapman (21g-7a).
Defensively, the Blue Devils have two new acquisitions to the lacrosse community in wrestlers Troy Ireland and Nick Lazarony. Ireland and Lazarony will add a much needed physicality this year. Coach Chuck Hammon writes of Lazarony and Ireland, "They will provide some defensive help and increase the physicality Batavia is looking to provide this season." In the cage, Theo Hill, who was promoted near the end of last season, will look to fill Landfried's shoes. Hill finished with 68 minutes between the pipes and 19 saves (52%).
Coach Hammon has scheduled out of league games against Haverling, Newark and Midlakes. With the addition of East Rochester to the league and the new divisional orientation, Batavia is looking to make this their season the best season so far.
