NYS Mandates 16 Games in 2010

- As expected, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, at their winter meeting in Binghamton, voted to reduce the maximum number of games for many scholastic sports including boys lacrosse.

nys mapStarting in the 2009-2010 season, the maximum number of game during the regular season will drop from 18 to 16.

Nina Van Erk, NYSPHSAA Executive Director, stated in a press release, "The representatives serving on the Executive Committee are very concerned with the fiscal challenges schools are facing. The Executive Committee has taken action to assist schools, leagues, conferences, sections and NYSPHSAA to reduce costs related to the interscholastic athletic program."

"The rationale supporting these incremental reductions will have a significant impact for our member schools. For example, the savings realized by schools may act to protect lower level programs such as modified from being eliminated."

In the current season, Monroe County teams are already at the 16 game maximum, as their league elected to reduce the number of games several years ago. Finger Lakes and GRALL teams will still be at 18 games for the 2009 season.
