Out Bracket Games
May 27, 2008 - As usual, it was generally a lot to a little in the out bracket games. As every Section Five team was entered in one of the three tournaments, the first round in Class A most games ended in blow outs. All but two of the higher seeded teams were winners including Canandaigua, McQuaid Jesuit, Thomas, Irondequoit, Penfield, Schroeder and Fairport. Pittsford (#9) defeated Gates Chili (#8) 10-7. In the single Class C out bracket game, Batavia (#9) beat Pal-Mac (#8) 8-6 and will face Penn Yan (#1) on Friday.
Fairport 11 - Churchville-Chili 5
Fairport played a strong game and defeated Churchville-Chili 11-5. Although the Saints started well, the Red Raiders came out victoriously.
The Saints scored the first goal of the game on a broken clear (Ryan Yunker). Fairport's Eric Hislop scored the first Raider goal (assisted by Aaron Jones). On the ensuing face-off, the Saints scored on a face-off fast-break . Keith Preston won the face-off and passed the ball up to Damien Pagano who scored the goal. The Saints led 2-1. Fairport scored the tying and go ahead goal before the end of the quarter. Martin Manilla and Connor Lowe scored for the Red Raiders. Fairport led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.
At this point the Red Raiders took off and scored the next seven goals (spanning two quarters) to take the 10-2 lead. Churchville-Chili switched goalies with 3:25 remaining in the third quarter and Fairport followed suit with the beginning of the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter the Raiders scored one goal early. The Saint's Gino Marcello scored the last two goals of the game on one-on-one drives; the first from midfield and the second from behind the cage.
Kristoffer Sterzin played the first three quarters for Fairport and finished the game with 5s/3ga (63%). Thomas Gropp played the final quarter and was scored on twice. Sean Kettles played the first two quarters and six and a half minutes into the third. Kettles finished with 4s/10ga. Adam Difulvio played the remainder of the game, but only faced one shot (which was a goal).
Keith Preston finished 10/19 at the face-off for Churchville and Michael Lehmann finished 9/17 for Fairport.
Scoring for Fairport were Hislop (3g-2a), Lowe (4g), Jones (1g-3a), Brendan Saylor (1g-2a), Paul Dancy (1g), Manilla (1g), Alexander Keil (1a) and James Cunningham (1a).
Scoring for Churchville-Chili were Marcello (2g-1a), Yunker (1g), Pagano (1g), Alex Pavone (1g) and Preston (1a).

Canandaigua 20 - Greece Arc/Oly 4
The #1 seeded Canandaigua easily defeated Greece Arcadia/Olympia (#16) 20-4. The Braves played Scott Bement for the first quarter and made 2 saves. Anthony DeLeo finished the game with 7s/4ga (63%). Zach Bevilacqua finished with 9s/20ga.
Scoring for Canandaigua were Justin Tomzak (2g-3a), Brian Scheetz (3g-1a), Deven Alves (3g-1a), Will Johnson (3g-1a), Austin Rogers (3a), Tanner Scharr (2g-1a), Gannon Osborn (1g-2a), Connor Henderson (2g), Marshall Johnson (1g-1a), Tom LaCrosse (1g-1a), Nick Munn (1g), Shane Dobies (1g) and Eric Schott (1a).
Scoring for Greece Arc/Oly were Frank Slapar (1g), Kevin Martin (1g), Chris Hellmers (1g), Joe Malovics (1g) and Nick DiGrazia (1a). No report was received from Greece Arc/Oly.
Pittsford 10 - Gates Chili 7
In the only game were the lower seeded defeated the higher seed, #9 Pittsford defeated #8 Gates-Chili 10-7. The Spartans came out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter. At the half, the Panthers had came back to lead by two goals (7-5). At the third quarter the score was tied 7-7. The final quarter was the difference maker with the Panthers holding the Spartans scoreless.
In the cage, Jason Baetzhold finished with 12s/10ga for Gates Chili and Brendan Green finished with 12s/7ga for Pittsford. Brad Weber (senior) finished the season with 30g-41a and is the Gates Chili all time leading scorer.
Scoring for Pittsford were Conor McDermott (4g-1a), Thomas Rodenhouse (3g), James Purpura (2g-1a), TJ Iuppa (1g), David Quinzi (1a) and Drew Moll (1a).
Scoring for Gates Chili were Tom Sudek (2g-2a), Brad Weber (1g-2a), Pat Sposato (2g), Grant Ferguson (1g-1a) and Jeff Fichtner (1g).
Irondequoit 13 - Greece Ath/Ody 1
Irondequoit easily defeated Greece Athena/Odyssey 13-1. Greece Ath/Ody scored their lone goal in the second quarter. Andrew Hosenfeld played the entire game for Greece finishing with 10s/13ga. Irondequoit split goalies at the half with Tyler Nash finishing with 5s/1ga (83%) in the first half and Geoff Morse finishing with 3s in the second half.
Scoring for Irondequoit were Drew Coholan (3g-5a), Greg Wright (2g-6a), Tony Micelotta (3g), Mike Beckwith (2g), Emmy Poccia (1g), Dave Micheli (1g) and Ian Nash (1g).
Scoring for Greece Ath/Ody was Greg Ryan (1g).
Penfield 19 - Rush-Henrietta 3
Penfield scored the first of ten unanswered goals in the first quarter just 33 seconds into the game when Connor Rice (2g-2a) 
got the ball on a broken clear and bounced it past Josh O`Shea who had just made two quick saves before the goal. Although O'Shea (15s/18ga) made numerous one-on one-saves, the Royal Comets were unable to clear the ball, giving the Patriots almost exclusive ball time and many shot opportunities. Six different players added first quarter goals (James Dwyer (1g-1a), Rice (1 more and 2a), Tucker Nelson (3g-2a), Kyle Vanthof (g-1a), Gian Maggio and Kevin Westcott. Alex Nowak added an assist after intercepting a clearing pass and sending the ball to Rice on the crease. Rush Henrietta had only two shots in the first quarter, both on the cage and both saved by Penfield goalie Jamie Solomon. The score after twelve minutes was 10-0.
Nate Malone scored two goals in the second quarter for Rush-Henrietta, the first at 11:05 after running the length of the field. Toby Terwilliger added one for Penfield (assisted by James Dwyer) and Dwyer scored on a crease cut and a feed from Tucker Nelson before Delone scored again for Rush. The score at the half was 12-2.
With lots of substitution in the second half, the play was less dominating, although Penfield pushed the game into running time at 10:57 in the third quarter. The Patriots scored all for goals in the quarter. Rice scored on a fast break from the face off and a feed from Vanthof at 11:51. Nelson, Vanthof and Maggio each scored unassisted goals and the quarter ended with Penfield up 16-2.
Kyle Semrau took over for Solomon in goal at the top of the fourth quarter. Penfield added two goals; the first in man up as Rob Ockenden received the ball from Mike Malloy who was behind the net and Malloy scored alone on an out side shot. Rush scored their last goal of the season when Brad Sauln brought the ball down on a clear and hit Dan Barreca on the low post. Tyler Zweifel scored a garbage goal for Penfield when he picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and popped it in for Penfield.
Scoring for Penfield were Connor Rice (3g-2a), Kyle Vanthof (2g-2a), Kevin Westcott (1g), Tucker Nelson (3g-3a), James Dwyer (3g-2a), Alex Nowak (1a), Gian Maggio (3g), Mike Malloy (1g-1a), Rob Ockendon (1g-1a), Toby Terwilliger (1g) and Tyler Zweifel (1g). Jamie Solomon started in the goal and recorded 3 saves and allowed 2 goals against (36 mins). Kyle Semrau finished with 2s/1ga (12 mins) for the Patriots who improve to 16-1.
Scoring for Rush-Henrietta were Nate DeLone (2g), Brad Sauln (1a) and Dan Barreca (1g). Josh O'Shea had 15 saves and 18 goals against and Matt Gladstone came in at 8:02 in the 4th, had 0 saves, 1 goal against. The Royal Comets finish their season at 3-14.
Thomas 14 - Hilton 6
Thomas defeated Hilton 14-6 in their outbracket game. Coach Rob Ruller of the Titans reports both teams played a "tough physical match-up."
Hilton opened up the scoring with a goal from Matt Davidson, Davidson intercepted the ball on the opening face-off and took the ball all the way down and scored. Max Gurowski and Brad Hutton added goals for the Titans to take the lead 2-1 after the first quarter. The second quarter remained close as the Titans hit four pipes. The half ended 4-2.
In the third quarter the Titans won 6-2 and took a strong lead which they held onto in the fourth quarter.
Scoring for Thomas were Jack Hinderland (5g), Billy Gurowski (2g), Brad Hutton (1g-1a), Kyle LaVallee (1g-1a), Nick Scalzo (1g-1a), Max Gurowski (1g), Pat Morrill (1g), JT Hauck (1g) and Kyle Rothfuss (1g). No goalie report from Thomas.
Scoring for Hilton were Jay Clifford (4g), David Smith (1g), Matt Davidson (1g), Colin Walker (1a) and James Moss (1a). Brad Speer and Jimmy Gaffney split time in the cage. Speer finished with 
13s/12ga and Gaffney finished with 2ga.
McQuaid Jesuit 15 - Spencerport 3
McQuaid Jesuit dominated Spencerport 15-3. Spencerport didn't score their first goal until 0:04 remaining in the third quarter. The Rangers added two more goals against the back-up goalie for the Knights in the second quarter.
Mitch Ritchie, with the exception of one single goal, scored or assisted every goal in the first three quarters. In the fourth quarter the Knights saw scoring from Corey Flanigan, Nick Wolak and Chris Barilla. The two Ranger goals were scored by Jon Robinson and Justin Putt.
Danny Caufield played the first three quarters and finished with 11s/1ga. Harry Goluses finished with 2s/2ga for the Knights in the fourth quarter. Mike Palvino played the entire game for Spencerport and finished with 12s/15ga.
Scoring for McQuaid Jesuit were Ritchie (7g-3a), JD Ayer (4a), Wolak (2g), Flanigan (2g), Wright (1g-1a), Jeff MacDonald (1g), Nick Caton (1g) and Barilla (1g).
Scoring for Spencerport were Kyle Breach (1g), Robinson (1g), Putt (1g) and Brad O'Keefe (1a).
Schroeder 16 - Brockport 2
Schroeder defeated Brockport 16-2. The Warriors scored the first seven goals in the first quarter. Brockport scored their first goal with 0:21 remaining in the opening quarter. The second Brockport goal was scored with 3:00 remaining in the third quarter. Schroeder held the Blue Devils scoreless in the second (2-0) and the fourth (3-0).
In the cage, Dylan White finished with 4s/16ga for Brockport. Scott Tota played three quarters and finished with 5s/2ga (71%). Brian Enck played the fourth quarter but did not see a shot on cage.
Chris Topping won 11/12 face-off's, Chris Mason was 3/3 and Pete Noto was 4/5. Leading the ground ball charge were Topping with 7, Shane Farrell and Ryan Martin with 4, and Mike Moriarty and Mason with three.
Scoring for Schroeder were Cody Consul (4g-1a), Mike Tota (2g-3a), Nick Mooney (4g), Mason (2g-2a), Joe Matison (2g-1a), Billy Harris (1g-1a), Nate Powe (1g) and Ryan Martin (1a).
Scoring for Brockport were Dylan Brown (2g) and Ryan Pratt (1a). Dylan White had 6s/15ga (36 mins) and Chris Iaonnone added 1s/1ga (12 mins).

Batavia 8 - Pal-Mac 6
In Class C out bracket action, 9th seeded Batavia knocked off 8th seeded Pal-Mac 8-6.
Play was even in the first quarter with Pal-Mac's Steve Vandewalle and Batavia's Joe Pedro both trading unassisted goals. In the second quarter Steve Vandewalle added a goal for Pal-Mac giving them the advantage at halftime 2-1. Vandewalle added another goal in the third buy Chip Chapman and Vinny Pedro each scored for the Blue Devils and Pal-Mac held a 5-3 lead at the end of three quarters. Batavia won the last quarter 5-1 in the last quarter. Attackmen Joe Muoio, Ian Chapman and Will Mulcahy each added a goal in the fourth. Batavia senior midfielder Gary Ranney added the game winner with 1:10 on the clock and Will Mulcahy sealed the deal with 14 seconds left when Pal-Mac goalie Steve Doyle left the net empty.
Scoring for Batavia were Joe Pedro (1g), Chip Chapman (2g), Vinny Pedro (1g), Joe Muoio (1g), Ian Chapman (1g), Gary Ranney (1g), Will Mulcahy (1g) and Zach Fay (1a). Matt Landfried had 18s/6ga for Batavia who will play Penn Yan on Friday.
Scoring for Pal-Mac were Steve VanDewalle (4g-1a), Mike DeMarr (1a), Pete Maklos (2a), Justin Closser (1g) and Greg Kier (1g-1a). Tim Doyle had 14s/8ga for the Raiders.
