Still Two Undefeated
May 17, 2008 - Both Canandaigua won their games today to remain undefeated. Canandaigua beat previously undefeated Hamburg (Section 6) 17-9 in a night game at CA, while Penfield beat Fairport 10-2 earlier in the day. In other games Aquinas beat Eastridge, McQuaid Jesuit beat Brighton, Schroeder beat Pittsford (7-6), Livonia beat Victor in OT, Waterloo defeated Newark, Midlakes took Mynderse, Pal-Mac beat BH (10-9) and Frontier (Section 6) beat Brockport.
Canandaigua 17 - Hamburg 9
Canandaigua remained undefeated and dealt the first loss of the season to Hamburg (Section 6) this afternoon as the Braves won 17-9. Both teams looked good on the field in the beginning, but as Canandaigua learned and adapted to the Bulldogs style of the play, Hamburg seemed unable to adapt and the Braves used the same plays over and over to keep the points adding up.
Canandaigua scored the first two goals of the game. Austin Rogers scored first with a low bounce shot and Justin Tomzak hit Brian Scheetz on the crease after driving from behind. Tomzak finished the game with eight assists, six of which were on the exact same move (the other two were a broken clear and a face-off fast-break). The Bulldogs seemed unable to adjust and anticipate Tomzak's drive from behind with a pass across the crease. Hamburg's goalie, James Maxwell, didn't have a chance on most goals.
In one play toward the end of the game, Maxwell saw the play coming and left Tomzak early for an unbelievable save across the crease. However, Maxwell couldn't stop them all and finished with 8s/17ga. Hamburg scored the next two goals to tie up the game. Matt Springer drove past three Braves' defensemen and put the ball away and Jerry Feurerstein intercepted a pass on a broken clear and found Joe Resetarits for the tying goal. Canandaigua added three more before the period ended with Scheetz adding two more and Connor Henderson scoring on a dump from Tomzak. The final goal of the first quarter was an inside look during an EMO, where Springer scored (assisted by Resetarits). Canandaigua led 5-3 after the first quarter.
Canandaigua continued their strong play, winning the second quarter, although by a lesser margin. The teams alternated goals in the second quarter with neither team making headway. The Braves' Marshall Johnson, Tanner Scharr, Scheetz and Nick Munn all scored for then Braves and Feurerstein scored twice and Springer once for the Bulldogs. The half ended with the score 9-6 for the Braves. It was still a close game and anyone could have pulled it out.
The Braves, however, came out of the break and scored the first four goals of the third quarter to take a 13-6 lead. The first goal was a face-off fast-break (Tomzak to Henderson) which set the tempo for the second half. One minute later Tomzak and Henderson hooked up again on "Tomzak's play". John Klein passed the ball onto the crease where Munn caught it and shot behind the back for a pretty goal for Canandaigua.
The fourth goal was scored man-down as Marshall Johnson intercepted the ball on defense, ran the whole length of the field, and hit Henderson across the crease. Johnson, who played well on man-down for the Braves, also played well at the face-off draw. Johnson finished 13/18 at the face-off. Hamburg scored their first goal of the second half with 5:11 remaining when Resetarits drove from behind and forced the ball into the back of the net. The Braves finished the quarter with another Tomzak special (Henderson scoring). The Braves took a 14-7 lead going into the final quarter.
Two more Tomzak drives (Henderson and Rogers) brought the lead to 16-7. Jon Domres scored during man-up (assisted by Resetarits) and Springer scored with a straight dodge to bring the score to 16-9, but Gannon Osborn added the final goal of the game for CA with a crease feed from Johnson. The Braves held the ball for the remaining 2 minutes and let time expire.
Although the numbers do not completely support the concept, Hamburg had difficultly clearing the ball on a number of key occasions early in the game. A number of times they threw a long pass that went out of bounds. After a number of key defensive stops the defense could not get the ball up to the offense to capitalize on the hard fought defensive stop.
Scott Bement made a number of strong saves for the Braves and finished the game with 7s/9ga. Overall the game was a contest of strong offensive talent, and although both goalies played well, each teams' offensive power is what wins them games.
The Bulldogs were hurt by a lack of shots, as Canandaigua had more goals that Hamburg has shots on cage. The Braves also were helped by a 41-27 advantage in ground ball production and finally, Canandaigua won the face off contest, winning 66% of the draws.
