Canandaigua over Corning East

April 19, 2008 - Canandaigua scored five goals in each of three quarters as the beat Corning East (Section 4) 15-6 on Evens Field. Schroeder was an overtime winner at Amherst (Section 6), Irondequoit scored six goals in the third on their way to a 14-6 win over vsiting McQuaid Jesuit and Rush-Henrietta beat Gates Chili 14-12. Waterloo lost to Section 3 winner, Jordan Elbridge on the last Saturday of spring break.
  

Canandaigua 15 - Corning East 6

<>  Last year after playing the Trojans closely for three quarters, Corning East scored four goals in less than two and a half minutes and won 12-7, but that was last year and in Corning. This year the Braves took control in the first quarter, scoring five goals to one, and although the Trojans mounted a comeback in the second quarter, Canandaigua scored ten goals in the second half, while limiting East to just two, to capture a decisive 15-6 win at home.
  
The game, played at Evans Field, was full of Canandaigua fans and a good contingent making the trip from Corning (Section 4). The Trojans, ranked #3 in the Class C NYSSWA poll were undefeated in six games, scoring an average over 13 goals per game. The Braves, ranked #9 in Class A were also 6-0 going into the game and averaged over ten goals per game.
  
After each team had one failed offensive try, Canandaigua scored the first of three in a row in little over two minutes. When a CA shot missed the cage, Justin Tomzak, behind the cage, caught the ball and quickly passed it to Brain Scheetz on the crease who put a simple wrist shot past CE senior goalie Tyler Reed. After winning the next face off on a technical foul, the Braves advanced the ball to Andrew Knoblauch who found Connor Henderson for the first of his five goals at 6:40. Scheetz and Tomzak reversed their earlier goal using the same technique to put Canandaigua up 3-0 at 4:52. East called a time out after their next possession, and the frustration of Reed and his coaches was evident, but shortly thereafter, the Trojans netted their first goal; Mitch Keefer to Cody Lucas on the low post. The Braves returned with two more before then end of the quarter starting with Nick Munn, who was unattended when he received the feed from Tom LaCrosse. Driving from behind the cage, Henderson passed the ball cross-crease to Knoblauch for the touch goal and gave CA a 5-1 lead after twelve minutes.
  
In the first quarter, The East defense struggled with slide distances, often moving too early and leaving men open. At the other end of the field, the CE offense passed the ball around the perimeter, unmolested but missed opportunities for outside shots that later, they would take. The East coaching staff pulled Reed from the goal, replacing him at the top of the second quarter with freshman goalie Tyler White who finished the game.
  
Corning East staged an expected and typical comeback at the top of the second quarter, scoring three unanswered goals. Justin Patterson started things off, scoring from a beautifully broken clear and ending up one-on-one with CA goalie Scott Bement after receiving the ball from Matt Pierotti. Two minutes later, while the Braves were two men down, Patterson dropped in right behind the low defensive post and received the feed from Mitch Keefer. After faking high and going low, Keefer made the man up goal. East's third goal was on a "worm burner" by Pierotti (from Tyler Reed) and the half ended with Canandaigua up 5-4.
  
The top of the third quarter was very much like then end of the second, with both teams playing well. CA scored first on a bounce shot (unassisted) by LaCrosse. On the next face off Steve Martuscello was checked hard in front of the bench area and after a five minute medical checkout, left the game. Pierotti, with the ball out front drove to the goal, switching from left to right and scored with a shot to the high right corner at 7:44. It was the last goal for East until just over one minute left in the game.
  
The next nine goals in a row belonged to Canandaigua. Henderson scored (unassisted), shooting around his defender, LaCrosse scored (unassisted) on a sweep, Tomzak added an unassisted goal on a drive from the right and Nick Munn scored the last goal of the third quarter at 0:05 with an assist from Brian Scheetz. Canandaigua led after three quarters, 10-5.
  
Evan Roth played a significant role in the victory. Roth's numerous second efforts and determination to gain control of the ball, particularly on face offs, gave the Braves numerous opportunities. Ben Knapton and the entire defense played well in front of Bement, limiting the number of inside shots as the Braves capitalized on Corning's many failed efforts to connect to inside feeds that were not open.
  
The first five goals of the fourth quarter went to Canandaigua, building their lead to 15-5. Knoblauch started behind the cage on the first possession and after driving close to the crease, pushed the ball to Henderson, open on the crease after a quick Corning slide. Henderson scored again (assisted by Tomzak) on a drive from a face off, Scheetz scored an unassisted goal after dodging his defender and Henderson scored another after Tomzak, surrounded by three Trojans, broke open for the pass to the unattended Henderson. The last CA goal came from Tanner Scharr who scored an unassisted goal, driving closed to the crease from "x" and placing the ball in the right corner. East finished the game scoring with a side arm shot (assisted by Devin Grimaldi) that got past CA backup goalie, Anthony DeLeo with 1:05 left in the game.
  
"We wanted to slow down the game in the second half," commented Head Coach Ed Mulheron after the game, "but the shots were there." The demonstrative win was unexpected, but Coach Mulheron credited the win to a team effort. "We won more face off than I had planned." They have a great face of man." The face off wins, were as much the result of the CA wings as the men at the draw.
  
Scoring for Canandaigua were Brian Scheetz (2g-2a), Connor Henderson (5g-1a), Justin Tomzak (2g-3a), Nick Munn (2g), Andrew Knoblauch (1g-2a), Tom LaCrosse (2g-1a) and Tanner Scharr (1g). Scott Bement had 8s/5ga and Anthony DeLeo finished with 3s/1ga for the Braves who advance to 7-0 and along with Penfield are the only undefeated teams n Section Five.
  
Scoring for Corning East were Cody Lucas (1g), Justin Patterson (2g), Matt Pierotti (2g-1a), Jordan Frysinger (1g), Mitch Keffer (1a), Matt Tobia (1a) and Devin Grimaldi (1a). Tyler Reed had 3s/5ga and Tyler White finished with 9s/10ga for Corning East (6-1).  
  

Irondequoit 14 - McQuaid Jesuit 6

 After taking a 7-5 lead in the first half, Irondequoit exploded with six goals in the thirds on their way to a 14-6 win over visiting McQuaid Jesuit.
  
Scoring for Irondequoit were Greg Wright (4g-3a), Tony Micelotta (3g-3a), Mike Wallenhorst (1g-3a), Drew Coholan (2g), Mike Beckwith
(1g), Bryan Haight (1g), Greg Coholan (1g), Jimmy Walsh (1g) and Tyler Kleehammer. In the cage, Tyler Nash played three quarters and finished with 20s/5ga (80%) and Geoff Morse finished with 3s/1ga (75%).
  
Scoring for McQuaid Jesuit were Jeff MacDonald (1g), Mitch Ritchie (2g-2a), Corey Flanigan (3g) and Eric Wright (1a). Danny Caufield recorded 14s/14ga for the Knights (5-3).    

Jordan Elbridge 19 - Waterloo 7

 Jordan Elbridge (Section 3) scored six goals in the first quarter and added nine more before the half on their way to a 19-7 win over visiting Waterloo.
  
Scoring for Joradan Elbridge were Brian Murray (1g-1a), Brian Belchert (2g-3a), Kory Smart (4g-3a), Joe Poppe (2g-1a), Abe Patrick (2g-1a), Dylan Johnson (1a), Josh Livingston (6g-2a), Jeff Glandagnolo (2g-1a) and James Hohm (1g-1a). Connor Smart had 8 saves in goal Ken Bush added 4 for the Eagles (3-4).
  
Scoring for Waterloo were Joe Shafer (1g), Rob Goodenow (1g), Pete Vacca (3g-1a), Curtis Brosius (3a), Chance Lowry (1a), Jeff Wadhams (1g) and Tim Freier (1g). Shawn Andrus had 10 saves and Jeff Wadhams had 2 saves in goal for The Indians.

Rush-Henrietta 14 - Gates Chili 12

 Rush-Henrietta improved their record to 2-2 with their 14-12 win over host Gates Chili. After taking a 3-2 lead after the first quarter and adding more for the 6-4 halftime lead, the Spartans ended the third up 10-7. Senior attackman Tom Sudek left the game with an ankle injury in the first quarter but Gates Chili tied the game at 12 with three minutes left in the game. The Royal Comets returned with two unanswered goals for the win.
  
Scoring for Rush-Henrietta were Justin Gmeinweiser (1g-1a), Nate DeLone (6g), Aaron Bethmann (3g-1a), Jake Alvarez (1g), Bobby Patridge (1g), Colin Cornaire (1g-1a) and Ryan Leonard (2a). Josh O'Shea made 8s/12ga and added one goal scored on a full field clear.
  
Scoring for Gates-Chili were Jeff Fichtner (3g-2a), Brad Weber (3g-2a), Tom Elins (4a), Mike Green (2g), Grant Ferguson (2g) and Pat Sposato (2g). In the cage, Jason Baetzhold finished the game with 10s/14ga.

Schroeder 10 - Amherst 9    OT-2

 Schroeder took two overtimes to defeat Amherst (Section 6) 10-9.
  
Amherst took an 2-1 lead after the first quarter. The second half saw a flurry of scoring by Amherst. Amherst took a 5-2 lead late in the second. With 0:07 remaining in the first half Pete Noto scored (assisted by Mike Tota). Halftime found the score 5-3 for Amherst.
  
The first goal of the third quarter was Amhersts', followed soon after by a solo goal by Chris Topping. Amherst scored two quick goals at 8:35 and 7:49. Amherst was in control of an 8-4 lead. Schroeder took the last 15 minutes of the game to score five of the last six goals. The game tying goal was scored by Chris Topping with 1:21 remaining in the fourth quarter.
  
With no scoring in the first overtime quarter the continued briefly into the second. With Schroeder man-down, Chris Topping found Mike Tota for the game winner just 0:16 into the second overtime period.
  
Scoring for Schroeder were Noto (3g-2a), Tota (3g-1a), Topping (2g-2a), Mark Butto (2g) and Cody Consul (1a). In the cage, Scott Tota played the entire game and finished with 6s/9ga. The Warriors advance to (2-4) while Amherst drops to 4-3.
