13 Games - Lots of League Play
April 10, 2008 - There was lots of action on Thursday with many league games. Winners today included Irondequoit, Churchville-Chili, Fairport, Penfield, Haverling, Victor, Canandaigua, Geneva, Penn Yan Athena/Odyssey, Thomas, and McQuaid Jesuit, who won in Buffalo against St. Francis. Close games included Eastridge over Brighton (6-5) and Penfield over Schroeder.
Ath/Ody 12 - Arc/Oly 6
The Greece Thunder defeated the Greece Lightning today 12-6 in the first of two Greece v. Greece matches of the season. They will meet again on May 15th. The Thunder played well and led from start to finish. They scored all twelve goals in the first three quarters. Danny Vyverberg scored five goals (including his first Varsity goal). 8th grader Gino Prestigiacomo also scored one goal for Thunder.
Scoring for Greece Ath/Ody were Nate Wallenhorst (3g-3a), Vyverberg (5g), Phil Bond (3g), Dave Yargeau (2a), Joe Prestigiacomo (2a), Gino Prestigiacomo (1g) and Eric Bodine (1a). In the cage Andrew Hosenfeld finished three quarters with 10s/6ga and Josh Bihrle finished the fourth quarter with 3s.
Scoring for Greece Arc/Oly were Frank Slapar (4g), Chris Helmers (1g-1a), Kevin Martin (1g-1a), and Dustin Lenz Emmi (1a). Zach Bevilacqua played the entire game, finishing with 17s/12ga.
Haverling 14 - Batavia 1
For the first time in the history of lacrosse at Haverling, the Rams are 3-1 as Haverling defeated Batavia 14-1 to add another win for the season. With three wins and a close game against GRALL opponent Livonia, the Rams are the strongest they have ever been.
Haverling led 6-0 after one and 8-0 at the half. The lone Blue Devil goal came in the third quarter as Kyle Maniace found Joe Muoio. In the cage, Matt Landfried had 15s and Theo Hill had 2s.
For Haverling, Chris Wolfer had 6s and TJ Smalt had 2s. At the face-off draw, Matt Nesbitt finished 13/18.
Scoring for Haverling were Dave Harris (5g), McKenzie Durham (3g-3a), Zach Reed (1g-2a), Matt Nesbitt (2g-1a), Nick Rossi (2g), Andy Nesbitt (1g) and Cole Beebe (2a).
Scoring for Batavia were Muoio (1g) and Maniace (1a).
Fairport 16 - Rush-Henrietta 11
Rush-Henrietta came right out in the first quarter against Fairport but a third quarter explosion by the Red Raiders led to a 18-11 win in the Monroe County D-1 game at Fairport. Sophomore attackman Brendan Saylor started the scoring for Fairport after receiving a cross-crease feed from Aaron Jones for an easy wrist shot just 37 seconds into the game. Rush-Henrietta came back quickly with an unassisted goal by senior attackman Nate Delone who ended the game with seven goals. Junior middie Mark Mattiacio gave the Royal Comets the lead with his unassisted goal at 9:21 on a drive to the left and a shot from 15 yards. Fairport forced the tie with an inside feed to Alexander Keil from Aaron Jones. Of the first three face offs, Fairport lost 3 on technical calls.
Delone scored another unassisted goal with a bounce shot from the front and scored again with an assist from Ryan Leonard and a hard outside shot in man up at 7:23. Rush looked confident and very in control on the offensive ned of the field and benefited from a number of broken clear attempts by the Red Raiders.
Fairport, however ended the quarter with four goals in a row to lead 6-4. Sophomore attackman Martin Manilla connected with Saylor for the first score with a textbook cross-crease pass, one of many that Fairport scored in the game. Keil scored on a pass from Manilla from a fast break clear that included four passes before the goal. Manilla added one from a fast break clear with an assist from defenseman James Cunningham and John McDonnell ended the quarter with a pass from Jones giving the Red Raiders a 6-4 lead after 12 minutes.
Fairport extended their lead with the first goal in the second quarter when Saylor hit the right corner after receiving a short pass from Jones. R-H countered with Delone from Ryan Leonard on shot that went under the stick of Fairport goalie Kris Sterzin. In the back-n-forth scoring Fairport returned with a shot by Jones (assisted by McDonnell). Delone scored again (unassisted) at 3:14 on a drive to the crease from the left and Fairport ended the half with a goal from Saylor, assisted by Jones. The Raiders led at the half 9-6 but Coach Jim DeWald was still telling his Rush-Henrietta team that they were still in the game, and in fact, it looked like they were.
Fairport wasted no time in asserting their dominance in the third quarter. Jones scored alone with run and shoot effort after Fairport won the face. Saylor scored 20 seconds later but RH came back with a goal by sophomore attackman Jake Alvarez on a broken Fairport clear and on an open net with Sterzin out on the clear. Keil scored on an feed from Jones and an outside shot at 7:53 and Jones added another at 7:31 (assisted by Manilla) with an outside to inside feed. Bobby Pattridge added one for R-H with a pass from Mattiacio which left him one-on-one with the goalie. Fairport ended the quarter with a goal by Paul Dancy which was passed twice before Saylor handed it off to Dancy. Fairport was ahead 14-8.
At the start of the fourth quarter R-H was hit with a 3:00 stick penalty. Fairport only added one goal during the penalty and if fact, added one penalty of their own giving the Royal Comets a lot of ball time during the penalty. Scoring the main up goal was Saylor (from Jones) with a feed to the crease. Fairport scored at 8:19 when McDonnell Fed the ball to Dancy, unattended on the high crease. Delone came back with an unassisted goal scored after dodging his defender and running right to the crease. Senior middie Justin Gmeinweiser added an unassisted goal for R-H with a sweep in front of the goal. Fairport Scored two more as the bench cleared. Joseph Pinto grabbed a loose ball on the crease and pumped it in. McDonnell hit Michael Schwab with a crossing pass for Fairport's eighteenth and last goal at 2:09. Rush-Henrietta ended the scoring with a goal by Delone, assisted by Pattridge at 1:50.
Rush-Henrietta started the game full on confidence and hard work, securing many ground balls and possessions. There style was based greatly on the ability of Nate Delone to beat his defended and get the shot on the goal It was very much run-n-gun for the Royal Comets who only had assists on four of their eleven goals. Fairport by contrast played most of the game with teamwork. Although they sometimes struggled with clears that did not result in an offensive set, when the had the offensive ball, the unselfish play by the offensive players produced 15 assisted goals.
Scoring for Fairport were Saylor (6g-1a), Jones (3g-7a), Keil (3g), Manilla (1g-3a), Cunningham (1a), McDonnell (1g-3a), Dancy (2g), Pinto (1g) and Schwab (1g). Kristoffer Sterzin recorded 10s/10ga and Thomas Gropp finsihed with 4s/1ga for Fairport.
Scoring for Rush-Henrietta were Delone (7g), Mattiacio (1g-1a), Leonard (2a), Alverez (1g), Pattridge (1g-1a) and Gmeinweiser (1g). R-H won the face off race 23 to 14 and senior goalie Josh O' Shea made 13s/18ga for the Royal Comets.
Irondequoit 11 - Pittsford 2
Irondequoit defeated Pittsford 11-2 in Monroe County division-1 play. Scoring for the Eagles were Drew Coholan (3g-2a), Greg Wright (3g-1a), Tony Micelotta (2g), Mike Wallenhorst (2g) and Mike Beckwith (1g). No goalie stats were reported for Irondequoit. No stats were reported for Pittsford.
Eastridge 6 - Brighton 5
Eastridge won a hard fought game this afternoon against Brighton 6-5. The score was tied at 2 at the half. Brighton scored the first two goals of the third to take an early lead. Eastridge tied the game at 4 and 5 but with 0:42 remaining, Brandon Moynihan scored, unassisted, to win the game for the Lancers.
Scoring for Eastridge were Matt Driffill (3g-1a), Brandon Moynihan (1g), Kevin Mahler (1g), Shane Driffill (1a), Adam Sisson (1g-1a), Joe Mortillaro (1a) and Jeremy Wolocki (1a). Eugene Ferrera finished the game with 14s/5ga for the Lancers.
Scoring for Brighton were Mark Henrichs (1g), Evan Davis (2g) and Taylor Gailbraith (2g-1a). Kyle Hohmann had 15s/6ga for the Barons.
Penfield 8 - Schroeder 6
Penfield came out on top in their closest match of the year, 8-6 over Webster Schroeder. Schroeder came into the game looking for their first divisional win and Penfield looking for their second. The Warriors were loud during warm-ups, shouting and chanting and getting pumped up, while, the Patriots were quiet and focused. The focus shot the Patriots forward as they scored six of eight goals during the first quarter.
Penfield won the first two face-off's and had scored two goals before the Warriors had even seen possession in their offensive zone. Kyle Denhoff (assisted by James Dwyer) and Kyle VanThof (assisted by Toby Terwilliger) started the scoring. Van Thof added the next goal with a hard outside shot on sophomore Scott Tota. Scott Tota finished the game with 11s/8ga (58%). However, in the first quarter he was 3s/6ga (33%). Terwilliger added the fourth Patriot goal of the game at 3:31. Shortly after the Warriors broke a Patriot clear to score (Nick Mooney from Joe Matison). Penfield tacked on two more goals before the quarter ended; Connor Rice and Tucker Nelson (assisted by Rice). The first quarter ended 6-1 for the Patriots.
The remainder of the game was Schroeder playing strong hard lacrosse and the Patriots holding them off. A key aspect was the Warrior's defensive implementation of a zone defense. The Patriots had difficulty adjusting to the change and were held scoreless for all of the second and half of the third quarters. In fact, only one goal was scored on the Warriors defense after the first quarter. The final goal of the game for the Patriots was scored with 0:20 remaining as four players converged to steal the ball and Denhoff found Rice on the crease, without a goalie.
Schroeder fought for the entire game and won three out of four quarters. Going into the final quarter Penfield led 7-4. Schroeder's Cody Consul scored at 5:35 with a feed from behind the cage from Mike Tota. At 1:49 Tota comes back and by force of will put the ball into the cage for the Warriors. Tota pulled the ball to the side and in a move reminiscent of Grant Catalino, drove straight to the crease and didn't give up until the ref signaled "goal."
One of the major keys for the Penfield' win was their ability control ball time. The Patriots possessed the ball for much of the fourth quarter. After several stall warnings to "keep it in" the box by the officials, the Patriots still kept the ball away from the Warriors. The Patriots held the ball without shooting for over six minutes of the final quarter.
Chris Topping and Kyle Van Thof took the face-off's for Schroeder and Penfield respectively. In the first quarter Van Thof won 5/8 (63%), but finished 6/16 (38%). Topping was 9/10 (90%) in the final three quarters and 11/15 (73%) for the entire match.
In the cage for the Patriots Brady Del Pozzo finished with 8s/6ga (57%).
Scoring for Penfield were Denhoff (2g-1a), Rice (2g-1a), Van Thof (2g-1a), Terwilliger (1g-1a), Tucker Nelson (1g), James Dwyer (1a).
Scoring for Schroeder were Matison (1g-2a), Consul (2g), Mike Tota (1g-1a), Nick Mooney (1g) and Billy Harris (1g).

McQuaid Jesuit 9 - St. Francis 7
McQuaid Jesuit becomes the second Section Five team to defeat St. Francis (Section Six) as the Knights won 9-7.
Scoring for McQuaid Jesuit were JD Ayer (2g-2a), Mitch Ritchie (2g-2a), Nick Caton (2g), Eric Wright (2g) and Jeff MacDonald (1g). In the cage Dan Caufield finished with 16s/7ga.
Thomas 13 - HF-L 8
Thomas defeated Honeoye Falls-Lima 13-8 this afternoon at McAvoy Park.
Thomas scored the first three goals as JT Hauck (assisted by Pat Morrill) scored at 8:41 followed quickly by two Nick Scalzo goals (unassisted and assisted by Jack Hinderland). HFL's Mike Coady and Greg Coady hooked up for the first HFL goal while man-down, followed by Ian Griffin scoring a lone goal. Nick Scalzo scored his third of five to finish the first quarter with a 4-2 lead for the Titans.
In the second quarter, the Titans scored four straight goals before Mickey Allan (assisted by Cade Norris) scored for the Cougars. Scoring for the Titans were Hinderland and Hutton (both twice). The third quarter also saw the Titans scoring the first three goals (two more for Scalzo and one for Hutton).
However, the fourth quarter was all Cougars as they scored the lone four goals. The final three goals of the game were all assisted by Norris with JR O'Flynn, Ian Griffin and Tommy O'Leary all scoring.
Austin Fox played the entire game in the cage for the Titans finishing with 9s/8ga. While Jay Tallon played the first 43 minutes for the Cougars with 11s/13ga/ Chris Milne finished the game but did not see any shots on goal.
Scoring for the Titans were Scalzo (5g-2a), Hinderland (2g-2a), Hutton (3g), Morrill (1g-1a), Hauck (1g) and John Hart, Max Gurowski, Kyle Rothfuss (1g) and Stephen O'Brien with one assist each.
Scoring for HF-L were Griffin (4g), Norris (4a), O'Leary (1g-1a), O' Flynn (1g), Allan (1g), Mike Coady (1g) and Greg Coady (1a).

Penn Yan 20 - Newark 3
Penn Yan improved their record to (4-0) after defeating Newark 20-3. Scoring for Penn Yan were Matt Osgood (7g-5a), Adam Trombley (3g-4a), John Linnan (3g-2a), Cole Castle (3g-1a), Jamil Modafarri (2g), Jordan Owen (1g-1a) and Brendan Minor (1g). Ethan Kamholtz had 6s/3ga and Justin Galusha added 3s/0ga for the Mustangs. No report from Newark.
Victor 13 - Pal-Mac 0
Victor secured a shutout in their 13-0 victory over host Pal-Mac in their afternoon game on Thursday. The Blue Devils led 2-0 after the first quarter and 8-0 at the half. Out shooting the Raiders 37-7, Victor also had a 38-10 ground ball advantage.
Scoring for Victor were Frank Valenti (7g), Ethan Payne (2g-3a), Alex Rogemoser (1g-4a), Trevor O'Shea (2g), Tom Rogemoser (2a) and Collin O'Shea (1g). Kevin Donnelly had 5s/0ga for the shutout.
Pal-Mac goalies Tim Doyle had 15s/12ga (43 mins) and Pat Russell finished the game with 3s/1ga (5 mins).
Churchville-Chili 10 - Hilton 4
Although the Cadets scored the first goal of the game at 10:25, the Saints held them scoreless for the next, 33.5 minutes. Churchville-Chili finished the game the 10-4 victor and extended their record to 2-2.
The Cadets faced 10 penalties, over eight minutes, and Churchville-Chili capitalized, scoring on three of the nine attempts. Both the Saints and the Cadets had trouble clearing (50% for the Cadets, 52% for the Saints).
In the cage, Sean Kettle played 39 minutes recording 16s/2ga (89%) before leaving with an injury. Back-up goalie Adam Difulvio stepped in and was strong, stopping five straight shots, before allowing a goal with 0:02 remaining in the game.
Hilton's goalie, Brad Speer, finished the game with 7s/10ga.
Scoring for Churchville-Chili were Gino Marcello (4g), Ryan Yunker (3g) and Scott Shamp, Jon Hemink and Cody Rumsey with one goal each, as well as Damien Pagano and Keith Preston with one assist each.
Scoring for Hilton were Jay Clifford (1g-1a) and Mike Crumlish, James Moss and Steve Bernsten with one goal each.

Geneva 16 - Midlakes 3
Geneva started off quickly, outscoring the Eagles 12-1 by halftime and winning the second half 4-2. Kyle Brimm started the game for the Panthers and after three quarters had one save and two goals against. Billy Craft played the final quarter for Geneva and finished with 3s/1ga (75%). For the Eagles, Jared Schoonerman played all but the last minute and a half. Schoonerman finished with 13s/15ga. Michael Iannone finished with 1s/1ga for Midlakes.
Scoring for Geneva were Kyle Boncaro (2g-5a), Alex Love (4g-1a), Eric Legott (3g-2a), Willie Rago (3g-2a), Jim Warner (2g-1a), Chris Tapscott (1g) and Gary Parmalee (1g).
Scoring for Midlakes were Tom Cheney (2g) and Nick Newland (1g).
Canandaigua 18 - Bloomfield-Honeoye 0
Canandaigua jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter and finished the game with an 18-0 win. Between the pipes for Bloomfield-Honeoye were Max Van Orman 8s/15ga and Jay Nichols 1s/3ga. For the Braves, Anthony DeLeo played the entire game and recorded 3s.
Scoring for Canandaigua were Deven Alves (4g-1a), Connor Henderson (1g-3a), Tanner Scharr (1g-3a), Nick Munn (3g), Justin Tomzak (1g-2a), Kevin Peck (1g-2a), Tom LaCrosse (1g-2a), Will Johnson (2g), Gannon Osborn (1g-1a), Ben Jesmer (1g-1a), Brian Scheetz (2a) and Shane Dobies (1g).
