Victor and Hilton Win First

March 31, 2008 - Monroe County and Finger Lakes opened their league seasons with a double-header at McAvoy Park. Victor was the 13-6 winner in the first game and Hilton was the 6-5 winner over Eastridge in the second game.

 
 McAvoy Park was host to Victor versus Honeoye Falls-Lima in the first game for a Monroe County team this season. The Blue Devils defeated the Cougars 13-6. The player of the game was Frank Valenti who led the Blue Devils with 6 goals.
 
Valenti opened the scoring in the first quarter with a well placed outside shot at 10:38. HFL came back less than a minute later after a broken clear. Two of HFL's goals came on broken clears and a third on EMO. Victor controlled most of the game using patience and skill to control the offense and the defense. That being said that, during the last six minutes of the game Victor gave their younger players a chance to show their stuff.
 
Coach Mark Foeder says "This is the youngest team I have ever had in school history. We have had four scrimmages but you just never know what will happen on the first whistle." During the last quarter of the game, Victor had five penalties and allowed three goals.
 
Victor scored eight straight goals spanning the first three quarters of play to take the game from a 2-3 lead to an 11-2 lead. There were also stand-out performances from Tom Rogemoser (3a) and Ethan Payne (2g-4a). At the face-off, Alex Rogemoser held a good percentage winning 9/12 (75%).  

For HFL, Tyler Burgasser had a standout day with 6 gbs and 2 takes. Leading the offensive charge was Mickey Allan (2g-1a).
 
In the cage, HFL split time with Chris Milne starting in the cage (2s/5ga) and Jay Tallon finishing the final three quarters (8s/8ga). For Victor, Kevin Donnelly played the entire game with 11s/6ga (65%).
   
HFL senior attackman, Cade Norris was on the sidelines in street clothes.
 
Scoring for Victor were Valenti (6g), Payne (2g-4a), Tom Rogemoser (3a), Vince Pettrone (2g), Alex Rogemoser (1g-1a), Brian Chapman (1g) and Trevor O'Shea (1g).
 
Scoring for HFL were Allan (2g-1a), Matt Lesczynski (1g-1a), Zach Whyte (1g), Ian Griffin (1g), Greg Coady (1g), Bryan Gardner (1a) and Tommy O'Leary (1a).

 Hilton defeated Eastridge by keeping them scoreless in both the second and fourth quarters. The final score was 6-5.
  
The Cadets scored first when Steve Bernsten came from behind the cage on an in-bounds whistle and put the ball past Eugene Ferrera. Eastridge quickly came back and scored three of their own to end the quarter. Shane Driffill scored both of his goals in the opening quarter along with Alex Austin's lone goal.
  
Austin was injured twice during the game. The first time he appeared to twist his knee, but after coming off the field, he returned to play. The second injury involved his wrist and he was escorted off the field by medical personnel.
  
During the second quarter the Cadets scored two goals while holding the Lancers scoreless. These two goals tied the score at 3-3 going into halftime.
  
In the third quarter Hilton scored first to take the lead, but after two EMO opportunities Eastridge had retaken the lead 5-4. The fourth and final quarter decided the game as Hilton once again scored two goals while holding the Lancers scoreless.
  
With less than 20 seconds remaining Eastridge had one more shot at the goal and after setting up after an in-bounds pass they tried one last play. However, senior defenseman Justin Beehler stripped the ball away and quickly picked up the ground ball and sent it down to the other end of the field. After the game Beehler said, "We just play defense, it doesn't matter if there are 20 minutes or 20 seconds left."
  
Mike Crumlish led the scoring for both teams with 2g-1a. Crumlish said that "the win was a team victory. You cannot win a game by yourself."
  
Scoring for Hilton were Crumlish (2g-1a), Bernsten (2g), James Moss (1g-1a), Jimmy Gaffney (2a) and Matt Fracassi (1g).
  
Scoring for Eastridge were Shane Driffill (2g), Brandon Moynihan (1g), Kevin Mahler (1g), Austin (1g) and Matt Driffill (1a).
